In the last 40 years, appliance sales have gone from local independent dealers (and Sears..) to a relative handful of big box mass merchandisers. Just as a few suppliers have the power to keep selling prices higher, WalMart, Lowe's, and Home Depot, by themselves, have the buying power to push wholesale prices consistently lower.. Knocking $5 off the price of each washer is significant when buying in massive volume, and they'll demand $8 off next year. This pressure on manufacturers results, year over year, in cheaper and thinner plastic replacing metal and rubber, screws and plastic welds replacing nuts and bolts, and flimsy electronics replacing knobs, switches, and mechanical timers. The shiny, glitzy exteriors of many of these washers in this video are hiding embarassingly cheap and cheezy innards.

These days, the big box guys, at least in my market, are just leasing the floor space and getting commissions. The appliance manufacturers have their own central warehouses and delivery teams. It doesn't matter who you buy from, the order is going to go to that warehouse and get delivered from there. This partially shuts out the independents as they are on the last udder and get served last on the most popular models. The big box stores have no inventory on hand. Makes a ton of sense from an inventory standpoint, and there isn't price competition between big box stores anymore. One has it on sale, they all will. The only pressure these days is coming from the different manufacturers.

We bought a whirlpool with the removable agitator a little over a year ago. It washed fine, but it was noisy(especially during spin cycle) and didn't have an end of cycle signal. After 4 service calls for various issues(luckily all covered under the 1 year warranty) we gave up after the 5th issue and replaced it with a speed queen. Obviously not available at the depot, but just a warning for the removable agitator models.

Basically everything is junk now that isn't a Speed Queen top loader. I work on all brands often, and it's the only washer that's less than 15-20 years old I would even allow in my house. I'll clean my clothes on a washboard by hand like it's the early 1900s before I'd buy anything with a suspension rod setup or an impeller instead of an agitator. Never buy a Samsung toploader, and never buy a Samsung appliance. They have garbage electronics, suspension rods, and quality. Pay the extra for the SQ now and thank yourself in 10 years when your washer still works. The LG front loaders are the next best option.

@@gargamel3393Speed Queen washing machines are going to be the least accessible, as far as money is concerned. I understand that Speed Queen washers and dryers are obviously built to last, so that factors into the extremely high upfront costs, but at the same time, what are people supposed to do that can't afford a Speed Queen washer and (rightfully) won't get a used washing machine?
Like it or not, $1200+ dollars is a HUGE asking price for many Americans, and with that in mind, it would really help if Speed Queen offered lease to own options instead of just offering the usual upfront one time purchase that a LOT of people simply don't have the financial luxury and freedom to be able to afford.

When it goes out, we are going to bite the bullet and go with a Speed Queen. That based on the the guy at two different box stores saying they are now all junk regardless of brand. They've all combined and only about three companies now. He said expect to replace in 2-5 years. SQ is still it's own company and is still used in laundry mats.

So what do I want in a washer?? Firstly, simplicity of operation (don't want computerized if at all possible!). Selectors for water levels, water temperature, wash cycles (regular, delicate, wrinkle -free, etc), and even one for extra rinses. I am used to an agitator operation so would likely prefer that to the impeller. (Although friends have an impeller model and love how it cleans & how dry their clothing is before putting in dryer). What I would like to see added to new machines is a removable filter that would catch the lint/hair. This was a feature on my first washing machine (1970) which was washer/spin dryer. The wash water was recirculated coming out over the top of the agitator where a removable "dish" with holes would collect the lint, etc for each load. Great item and you didn't need to put your clothes in a dryer to remove the lint you get from today's machines. Thank you for presenting this as my existing machine is showing its age and will need to be replaced in this coming year.

I have a whirlpool… the spin cycle is done. The gear system is plastic.. designed to fail. Very disappointing

GE? Have you took the time to read the reviews and there are a lot of them on the GE washers?...Ya ...not very good at all unless you go to GE Profile line which sends the price way up.

There is a difference between an agitator and an agi-peller. All I've seen in this video have been impellers and agi-pellers.
You want a real agitator go to an independent store and buy a Speed Queen TC5 series.

You completely skipped the front loaders. I don’t think there is a single top loader I would buy for myself.

Yes I personally would not own a front loader even if the government mandates it

Front loaders are a nightmare. Grow mold and take too long to wash. Had a Maytag one when I was married (German built) and external plastic tub cracked in three years

Im sorry but whirlpool are bad, they don’t really wash like they used to, with or without agitator, plus, hate to break it to you, but they’re made here in Mexico, for the whole continent and some places in Asia, I agree that when they were American made, they were superior, like Maytag’s 😢

  • @Shahrdad

A lot of these "agitator" models are not true old fashioned agitator washers. On some, the agitator and drum are attached to each other and don't move independently, and some are just impeller models with an agitator in place of an impeller. I'd always go with a good front loader, which cleans much better than these bastardized top loaders.

Buy Speed Queen washers and driers with simple mechanical dials. They’re built to last 25 years @ 8 loads / week. All this junk will be dead in a few years when their computer board inevitably fails.

The Home Depot has a no return policy on appliances. If you buy one there they do not take them back. If you buy one, and do not like it you are stuck with it. Been there done that, and got ripped off. Never again. All of my appliances are bought at my local appliance retailer.
