Truck was sitting since 1994 pulled the rack unstuck the injectors. Had one leaking fuel line to the right head pulled the thermostat house out got all the rust chunks out and cleaned the thermostats. The axles are wedge brakes they where all cut off to get it out the yard so I was able to get 5 out of 6 working. After that did a oil filter change and drove it home.

Met a guy that had one and shoehorned a V-12 double turbo in one. Ran a truck shop and he said thet was his toy. 2 sets of 6V-71 manifolds and a turbo hung on eash one. I SAW it and it was SWEET running, straight pipes from the turbos back. When he folded the hood up I about fell over. I'd run the 12-v's in R-35 rock trucks and TS-24 pans. There was one in SC that shoehorned one in a 'B' model Mack. Had a sand plant there. FAST truck!

Nothing like an old 2 stroke Detroit, I used to work for a shop and someone brought in a 1980 Gmc Astro cabover (not the van) with an 8 71 that he twincharged. Right off the blower either he or a previous owner installed a big single turbo and I for one was surprised how much of a difference that made in the truck's tone. Sounded like it was ready to blow up but it still sounded like an absolute monster if it continued to hold together

Nice result. Thank you. I was born in a NZ country town and back around 1970, the most powerful and impressive truck in town was a Bedford KM artic tractor with an 8V71 and Jake brake. Years back a logging contractor here in NZ ordered a Kenworth with a 12V71. The factory manager protested because he reckoned that it would be a dangerous hot rod (or words to that effect). The contractor sent back ‘just build it’. His delivery times to the port of Tauranga improved dramatically (an extra run per day, if I recall correctly) and the truck was nicknamed ‘Concorde’. It has been restored and is now basically a show truck. Story covered in NZ tv series Low Gear, accessible via their website.

No one wanted to drive it because of transmission noise telegraphed up the shift stick into the cab. Because of the long cab the transmission was directly under the cab. No remote linkage was used. The gear shift lever went straight down to the transmission. Wrapping rubber bungee cables around the stick helped. The one we had was equipped with a 13 speed. Nice ride with that long frame.

I have a good friend who has a Franklin log skidder with a Detroit Diesel in it, I forget how many cylinders and the only muffler that it has was a thing that a prior owner has crudely built that was a single chamber big flat box on the roof on top of a hole cut in the roof that would radiate heat from the exhaust down onto the operator below and the rig had no windows anywhere and I don't think that it had doors either. I even got to drive the thing a bit. Detroit diesels have their own uniqueness but they've got some one of a kind advantages. I've run across some people on RUclips who take an old Detroit and sit it on the ground with no overrun any governor until it goes into into full runaway and big chunks of metal fly around and then they restart the Detroit and it still restarts and runs multiple times with huge holes in it and pieces gone that flew off into the distance and the poor Detroit loyally restarts multiple times more while they send it into runaway again over and over until all moving parts seize. And they act as if it's funny. when I ran across videos like that I was too naive to know what they were going to do. I consider that a "snuff film" of brilliant historic technology that helped win WWII and helped build the modern world. I delight to see videos of people caring for and using machinery powered by Detroit Diesel. From back when America still focused on hard work and building things.

We loaded and when we went to leave the clutch pedal hit the floor ( turned out the fingers broke ) . The starter didn't have the torque to start in gear but if running and held against the low gear gate if I flipped the 2 speed it would slip in . My sister timed the lights so we didn't have to stop and once we got on the highway always took our pee breaks on a downhill slope . Got her into new city and parked , unloaded , and then after it was empty there was just a bit of a grade so I had a rolling start to get back to the farm . Those hydraulic clutches are such a PITA in these GMC’s, if you have a part no. For a rebuild kit and could include it I’d be very appreciative, we’ve got a 72 7500 tandem with a 6v53 and 5x3 that’s parked because of a bypassing clutch master.

Sad Fact: As poor as the fuel efficiency of the 2 stroke Detroits proved to be, today's modern emissions-compliant diesels are now often proving themselves to be even worse while simultaneously proving to be some of the most costly per mile of any diesel to operate.😢
