I took a driving test in one of these. It was 100 degrees, no A/C. The instructor told me to turn around after 2 blocks, "I can't ride in this thing. You pass."

@oldrustycars Your lucky, I took my test in a 76’ 90 series Chevy, 318 13 spd, and the driving instructor burned her arm on the pipe getting in, needless to say she put me thru hell!

I got to drive one of those with a V12 Detroit that's what we had back in the day and we loved them, the snot-nosed bunch of fucking steering wheel holders having a clue and you wouldn't know a good truck with bit you on the ass

Dude, the first truck I drove way back in 75 was a 9500 Jimmy with a 6-71 Detroit and a 13 speed day cab! Loud, rode like crap, no power when loaded, just a peach! Did not take me long to switch to a 71 Diamond Reo, 6-71, 13 speed day cab! Same thing but a touch more comfortable! About a month in that truck, and I started eyeing a 68 Diamond Reo with a 250 Cummins and a twin stick 4 by 4 my boss had out in the weeds! He said it ran when they parked it out there, but no one wanted to drive it because of the twin stick. I took some fresh batteries out to it, pulled the compression release, turned it over till i saw oil pressure, shoved the CR back in, that old Cummins came to life! Drove it out of the weeds to the shop, put new tires on it, checked everything over, and started hauling Road oil in a tanker with it! Been a Cummins man ever since!
You may need to "Excite" that alternator, to get it to start working again. I know you have already dealt with this, but if you saved it, it may still be good!

Making some cab & frame crossmember modifications to mount a Link cab mate air ride suspension would greatly improve the overall ride quality of the truck. Some air ride high back seats and installing some air bags on the front axle will also improve the ride quality of the truck.

Congrats to finding such a nice truck. Where I am, I only find rust-jacked, cancerous, circling-the-drain-of-eternal-death non-runners that had the last will to live sucked out of them a long time ago. An "old" truck here is from the 1990'!

Story be safe

my uncle who died a week ago was a 2 stroke detroit specialist in the 70s & 80s. when he died, i thought of the dying art of setting up a rack on the old engines.he learned how to work on them in the service.was in his shop i first ever saw a 8V92 with a 8 inch hole in the block from a rod going thru it.he was putting another engine in the truck.im guessing the driver let it roll down a hill into an overspeed condition.i never had one over 2150, & never had a problem.

Towing company I worked for had an old IH daycab tractor with a 6v71 in a barn. They used to turn it down for emmisions testing and then turn it back up after it passed. The two former owners passed away and the son took over and nobody knew how to work on it. It was a shame. We got the old girl going one day and pulled it into the shop and washed it. It was a minty old truck. Think they sold it years later

They need to get a load and get hot .
In marina we had guys idle them in boats at dock and not take them out in bay .
Would be all loaded up carbon and stuck rings diesel in crankcase oil .

What do expect , this isn't Japan where the vehicles almost never breakdown. Here in America tow truck drivers sit along side the roads and highways like vultures ready to tow our junk so they can capitalize . That is the way it is and it will always be that way. Truck shops expect you to break down a lot here so they make $150- $200 an hour off of our crap that is made right here in the USA. So the usa manufactures know not to make stuff to good or the roadside vultures will go hungry. Plus if they made trucks too good you won't come back to buy another one.

O-H-I-O Porter greetings.🇺🇸 Happy New Year! This is one quite unusual GMC! Will It Start..Oh, this is running so well that I just wanna take it home! So there!🤩 I bet you were a bit shocked, huh?! The body looks like it is in really good shape! That’s a bit unusual. I love the hitch you added to it.🥰 What is the mechanism in front of the 5th wheel? Is that some kind of hydraulic lifter for the 5th wheel? What a find!! Really looking forward seeing more of this fine old truck! You must have a shirt in the charging system or something is really draining it. Keep it coming & be safe out there!🥰😎✌️
