WILL IT RUN? 8v71 Detroit Diesel

  • In this episode we attempt to start the International Transtar after years of sitting. Engine in unknown condition. Engine is a Detroit 8v71n. It was run about 15 years ago and was only running on 4-5 cylinders. Not sure if it’s compression or injectors. It has been tuned with new injectors this time but still seems to be down at least 3 cylinders. It is getting plenty of diesel fuel to dead cylinders so possibly compression. We keep running and letting it cool to possibly free up stuck rings. May need further investigation #detroitdiesel #willitstart #willitrun #oldtruck #diesel

    Detroit engines have a unique sound, even when not firing on all cylinders.

    I envy you guys over there, you get all these cool vintage stuff and it's right hand drive. Finding this kind of stuff in the UK would be virtually impossible. Another good one, thanks Steve.

    G'Day Steve, All that white smoke looks like the eye burning variety for sure ! Always good to hear an old Detroit. My old man drove few for other companies but every truck he owned had a Cummins. He was a Cummins lover through and through . Good video as always mate , will look forward to updates on that old Transtar 🌵

      Hi mate thanks for watching. It is good to hear them, even running rough like this. I like Cummins too mate, I think if I was driving all day every day I would rather a Cummins. Even after a weekend in these Detroit’s I have I feel it, the noise gets to you after a while. Admittedly they aren’t standard mufflers on them, most have had the crowbar down through them. You will be updated as I go mate

    Doesn't seem overly loud for having a Detroit, must be good mufflers.

      Mate it’s not. I have 2 Detroit powered transtars and both are very quiet. One has a single muffler and I’ve taken it off and doesn’t make a difference. The white I have and the 2 Kenworths are Detroit also and very noisy

There’s blokes with bigger collections than me here but I’m trying to save as many as I can and share some of it. There’s plenty more on its way mate so stay tuned

Do you have an email address so I can fwd the photo, It was Noel Shepherd Contractors ... I've Fwd this clip to Dad and he was Excited to see it come to life again, would love to see the Progress... Are you going to Restore it to a Tipper ?

      This is amazing mate. They took the tipper off it before my uncle bought it. He was going to restore it but then he found his original one and did that one up instead so I bought this one off him. It has a dent in the back of the cab where the hoist fell forward when they took it off. I’m hoping to get it going and put a turntable on it. Once you send a photo through then I will send you a few photos of when I bought it and picked it up

    The Transtar is a bonny lorry.
    On the FIP feed side does it have a small, usually brass thimble type filter?.
    Is the emergency air cut off partially closed?. Might be a easier check than head pulling.
    For windscreens/windshield is it worth checking internationally?.
    Either way mate, persistence and determination are omnipotent💪🏻

      Hi mate, it just returns through the orifice from the heads to the tank. On the pickup there is a filter before and after the transfer pump. It’s running off a clean new drum here and not the tank. Blower flap is right open. I have done minimal research overseas. I’m sure there are plenty around. Some videos I watch there are dozens of them in old yards? See how I go. I haven’t looked to hard yet

    If it sat a long time did it get water in the fuel. I learned with the 2-71 in an Allis crawler that if water gets to the injector it will blow the tips off of them. I replaced the tips and fired right up. I bought just the tips, disassembled the injectors and replaced them. Only cost me about $30. Next spring I’ll have to start my 74 Diamond Reo with a 6V71 for you.

    • @stevesplacedownunder
      @stevesplacedownunder  Год назад

      Hi mate thanks for the comment. It is possible but the injectors were in a plastic tub in the shed before I put them in and they had been roughly checked by someone, could still be a problem though, and it is running off a drum with new clean diesel so probably not fuel. I don’t know why they stopped using it, maybe overheated or just gummed up from idling around. I’m looking forward to that mate. I’ve been watching your videos

      @stevesplacedownunder  Год назад +2

      It needs 3 injectors as far as I can tell. I haven’t been back near it. Apparently was Hayes haulage new then a civil contractor had it. I ended up getting a photo of it when the civil mob had it with a tipper body on it.

    Two cycle Detroit diesels of the 53, 71, and 92 variety are not naturally aspirated. All have a Roots type blower for forced induction. Naturally aspirated engines are able to suck in their own air through the intake valves, but Detroit diesels have no intake valves and air is forced in at the bottom of the stroke.

    • @stevesplacedownunder
      @stevesplacedownunder  Год назад +1

      I know mate. I have many of these engines. The blower is part of the engine. They are only classed as force induction if turbocharged. The blower is to scavenge exhaust gas and fill with clean air

    • @MrEferrell
      @MrEferrell Год назад

      @@stevesplacedownunder A naturally aspirated engine will run without either a supercharger or turbocharger. The Detroit diesels of the 2 cycle variety will not. They will run without a turbo, but not without the engine mounted supercharger.

      @@MrEferrell Non turbo charged GM Detroits are naturally aspirated, ie they will not run without the "blower", and as the blower only operates at 1or so lb above atmosphere they do not provide any super charging effect, which is why they are a rootes style blower👍
