  • Trying to start an old Autocar that's been sitting for years. V8-71 Detroit Diesel in all its screaming glory. Will it start? Will it run? Will I escape without getting stung by wasps? It's all a mystery that will keep you enthralled for close to 10 minutes!

    Also a fan of how much you beat cold motors, I had a guy who brought one to work the other day and he asked me why the clacking noise? I started it up and was revving it like those guys on RUclips and it starts that clacking noise. I smiled at him and said that's what you get when revving a cold engine. I know that you are doing what you are because it is possible on that but these young people have no idea what and why certain things can't be done on certain motors.     That “extra ventilation” must be an after market add on. That sucker should improve the arrow dynamics lowering fuel consumption,increase the airflow adding 1.2 up, and keep the cab nice and cool.

      I was talking to my son about how long ago he pulled that foot valve out since I couldn't remember, and it figures it's been 5 years since we parked it and pulled the batteries. It's just crazy how good that thing starts and runs.

      The second battery is on the passenger side in the other battery box.

    Unless the hood was changed,this truck is 1967 or older. 68 went to just Autocar on the hood.

    What a BEAST, Ain't nothing more Robust and heavier duty than an A-car, and DM mack! Those 8v71s run forever. if they don't stick wide open lol. Got any old cabovers out there ??? Back when steering wheels made you WORK and gain Real muscles! plus a REAL Steering wheel at that! Holy cow that yard is massive!!!

      Pacific trucks, check them out. They like to hail 150+ ton off highway! I can't remember but I think some trucks with the 16' wide bunks could handle around 240 ton!

      Keep your fingers crossed. I've got a bunch more Detroit's and some haven't run since I was in high school. Surely one of them will run away and make for great entertainment.

    I freaked out when you sent it to the Moon I thought she was going to start running away sometimes they said a long time s*** sticks and she starts running like hell

      Keep your fingers crossed, I've got several more detroits that have been sitting for 20 + years and there's no reason to think that at least one of them won't stick open. One of those cutting loose when you're not expecting it is almost a religious experience. You've got some cool stuff on your channel, I'll check it out a little better when I get free.

    8v92 or 8v71? Always got to watch that the rack isn't stuck before firing them or you'll have to cholke the air off quick over at the air intake... this have a turbo? Guess we'll find out lol... usually up top over the blower. lol Buckle up!

      No turbo, and the emergency kill is functional. I've yet to have one run away on start up, knock on wood 😁

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 318 Double D's were painted red or silver. Never seen a GM Fuel to Noise Converter Oil Sprayer in blue before. Of course I'm also no Double D expert (at least not engine wise 😂) either.

      This should have been Alpine green originally as far as I know, but this was an auction truck we got back in about '94(?) and I have no idea of its history. Odds are at some point that engine was rebuilt (especially considering how well it runs) and I have no idea why it got painted that color.

    i believe you have a 8v92 there i can tell by the blower and how it is mounted at the flange

      You could very well be correct, I've never had to do more than oil and filters so never paid much attention in the past.

      Another way to tell is by the water pump, front cover on water pump on the 71 will have bolts holding it in. The 92 has a snap ring

      Yep, quite a ways from NJ, and the truck came out of Topeka, Kansas but at the moment I'm not really interested in selling it. It needs to move a couple trailers around here first.

      That oil has to be at least 25 years old, but that was a good guess!
