  • Hike Date: 7/11/23. Mount Massive, located in the Sawatch Range near Leadville, was CO 14er #44 for me, and 20th of this trip. I went up the southwest slopes, which is not the standard route, but still a popular trail. After a flat approach in the woods, it goes up very steeply the rest of the way, but otherwise not a technical or super challenging hike. Ran into some mountain goats on the way off the ridge too!

Thanks for the video! Did this route two days ago, aside from the 80mph wind gusts it was great!

80 mph?! is that an exaggeration? that would pick you up and blow you off the ridge!

@@HikingEngineer According to OpenSummit it was gusting to 80mph. All I know is that wind cut through all my layers, and I couldn't feel my hands. I was almost blown over several times, but poles helped a lot.

After summitting, those other yahoos, uh, intrepid hikers, could just spend a couple minutes up there and then they could move away before they pull out their phones, so as to give other people coming up a better moment by themselves on the summit.
