After moving out west to AZ in 2019 for a lifestyle change and easier access to mountains, I bought a GoPro in May 2021 and started recording portions of my hikes. Not only it is a way for friends and family to see what I'm up to, but also I want the hiking community to benefit from my videos, as I tend to do a lot of longer, harder, and/or offtrail type adventures. I'm hopeful my footage will help others as they decide if these hikes are suitable for them! I'm always happy to answer any questions in the comments. I hike all over the Western US but have lived all over, so have hiked on the east coast as well. Unfortunately plenty of my hiking was before I started recording videos. Over time I will start expanding more internationally, and I went to Iceland in the summer of 2022. Current trips are planned to Europe to bag the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc in August 2024, as well as finishing the Coloardo 14ers in July 2024. Patagonia is tentative for January 2025. Happy hiking!

Morning Glory Arch (Grandstaff Trail) - Moab, UT
Просмотров 18321 день назад
Morning Glory, after research, is an alcove arch and NOT a natural bridge, although it seems there is conflicting information on the internet. It's a very popular and easy accessible hike. You start this hike from the Grandstaff Trail a couple miles from downtown Moab, UT. You must cross the creek around 12 times, and with water flowing after rains the crossings might be more difficult to stay ...

Leaves the good places empty :)
true
Isn't it fun to go hiking at the State Fair
love it
These are EXACTLY the type of videos I’m looking for when preparing for a hike! Thank you!!!
thanks! I have lots of them all over, so hopefully you can find stuff to help you with hikes. Let me know if you ever have any questions
Nice climb!
ha needed to at least make the baby hike exciting
I wonder how many people got stuck in that little slot and had to be rescued, or worse.
i doubt many people even go to this arch let alone climb up on it
Hiked this a few years ago but couldn't find it Kiva. I heard it was blocked off so I didn't want to 'push' it in trying to get where I'm not supposed to be going. Good to know it's blocked off right where you can see it. Maybe I'll try again next time I'm in the area.
yeah there are gps tracks online but there actually is a trail!
@@HikingEngineer I was using AllTrails at the time. The recorded trail stopped at that last Cairn and turn off to the right. I thought it was to the left. I kind of went at a bad time, sky was overcast and was getting dark. I couldn't see the trail that well.
I did this one on 8/20/2023, haha. tough.
I liked this one!
I got off track on that one too, seems like everyone does. Not to hard to find your way back fortunately.
We went out to Dark Angel 9 years ago, but came back the same way. I didn't want to get lost on the primitive trail, since back then I didn't have all trails or gps. Plus, I wasn't that experienced at route finding, not that Im great at it now, lol. Thanks for the video.
it's not that bad -- you could do it without a map I think!
Upheaval Dome was cool! Awesome scenery everywhere in the desert and miss it hugely!
did you do the loop around it (and spur into it)? I have a video on the loop around it too -- thanks for watching and commenting!
@@HikingEngineer No. Would have liked to! Hike length with knee prob's....bla bla that's another story. Keep the vids rolling and safe adventuring!
Super awesome scenery! We pushed our bikes to the top, looked around at some of the best scenery I've ever seen, then had quite a fast ride down. Had the mountain to ourselves the whole way. We saw a quite large animal at the top that had a bushy tail and it was black and white (not a skunk). Interesting find up there. Love that volcano field!
hmm wonder what it was? I have a lot of a videos thanks for watching and commenting
@@HikingEngineer I noticed that. Any have a Ringtail? That's what it was; a full grown Ringtail. It has alot of nicknames including Ringtail Cat and of course it was gone before I got a pic.
@@thatisartnotpffft6368 I'm no expert on all the types of exotic animals. There are some ringtail type animals down near tucson but not that I know up at 9000 ft or so
@@HikingEngineer Ya they can be found at that elevation. The ringtail is also AZ state mammal. Was quite strange to me when I saw it and made me wonder what it was for sure!
I would love to come with you on one of these hikes. Happy to help film, contribute supplies, or whatever.
what would be you're routine to prepare your body for such a hike? climb camelback mountain 5 day's in a row, then wait a week and hit this trail? Or walk half way 5 times then go for it? Or just chuck caution to the wind and give yourself like 8 hours? I don't know...I carried a 45 pound pack halfway up and felt it wise to turn back cause I havent' done this kind of thing before.
hard to give advice since everyone has different levels of fitness - for me this is a short easy hike but i'm used to doing 20 to 60 mile day efforts. i would just go for it and take your time, it's not that many miles, just start early in the am and you'll have plenty of daylight. Even moving slowly with lots of breaks you should be able to do it in 5 to 6 hrs, it's not as bad as you might think!
@@HikingEngineer lol..I know there is a guy who's 90+ who does it twice a week....so there's hope for me yet. Thanks for the encouragement :)
@@robanderson4137 I live right near camelback so if you want to do it some morning lmk
do dogs actually make it up to flat iron? do they need to be carried up some of the climbing sections?
Yeah I usually see a handful of dogs every time I do this -- some agile dogs get up fine on their own, but I've seen dogs having to be carried up the last section
Is there a trail that goes to that plateau down below the Flatiron? ruclips.net/video/nVhJHMexe0U/видео.html
You can pretty much hike/scramble over to anywhere you would wanna go anywhere in the superstitions -- I haven't actually gone to this plateau below, but it would easy enough to branch right out of siphon draw over to it
Nice 👍. Made that hike last September
Another marvelous venture into the unknown. Nice to see footprints every now and then.
it's a great hike!
cool, gives me a good reason to go back to Island in the Sky
not a ton of hard stuff unless you get down off the plateau to the white rim and climb back up
Hi Kevin! This is an amazing hike! I did it last September (also clockwise) and I had a blast! Boulder field is probably my favorite part. 😎🤘 And you are absolutely right, stats might be deceiving, this trail is serious stuff, folks venturing into this trail need to be prepared. Those last 2 miles were endless for me 😂😂😂, I was like “these have got to be the longest 2 miles in recent memory 🥵” 😂 All in all, I loved this trail, would totally do it again 😎👍 Thanks for sharing your adventure and experience on this trail 👍
yeah it's a great one! btw did the superstition ridgeline each way today with a friend -- weather was great
@ indeed, weather was great 😎👍 I went to hike Dome Mountain , very slippery on the way down with all that lose rock, but nice views and only saw 3 other hikers all of them in the same group
@@bobbafett7407 i don't think I'm familiar with Dome Mtn - is that the one off the highway as you head west closer to CA?
@@HikingEngineer it’s located in Apache Junction, you park at the Bulldog Canyon - Wolverine Gate trailhead. First mile or so is on the ohv road then it forks right up the mountains. Trail up to Dome Mountain proper is easy to follow. For Dome Mountain East you go right at the saddle, there is a faint trail, a little steep at times. There is also Dome Mountain South, if there is a trail there I completely missed it
@@bobbafett7407 i'll check it out
That was a fun one! Crazy route finding. Cool side quest to that little cave!
always gotta check out caves
finally found a video covering the full process will be there soon 2025 season
awesome -- good luck!
this is the best matterhorn video i've seen- really informative and a great watch!
thank you! have you done it?
I remember this one. There are some trickier options.
I had no idea this place existed. Will visit. Thank you sir
there's lot of offtrail stuff, but this one is pretty easy to find if you do some research
Is eagle peak accessible from upper Yosemite falls?
Yes, that's what I did in the video -- confused here
It must’ve taken so long to make these trails
not really sure...
How are all the surfers getting there or do they paddle north from the pier.
not really sure, not a surfer -- I think there are lots of beach access points that are easier than this one!
Beautiful scenery. Thank you for sharing.
any time! plenty more videos coming
Looks familiar. I think we were there years ago. I got to look at my maps. The snow puts a real cool perspective on it.
I'm sure you did most of the same "hikes"/viewpoints that I did in Island of the Sky -- plenty more videos coming
@@HikingEngineer Just like 3 maybe. We didn't have much time. I do know we have to go back and explore the Needle's area though.
Yeah, we saw this in early September like 9 years ago. Too many people.
a zoo
I found a fixed rope on parriot but couldn't find the route after that.
i'll have to go back to find it
it's ridiculous how much cool stuff there is in Moab
Keep it up! I did it 8 times and that's enough. We averaged 14hrs, believe it or not.
not bad!
Next visit, try repelling off the arch. Great route (as long as you're going off season)
is there an anchor up there?
@HikingEngineer yes there's an anchor, some people also use a tree that's accessible as well
There is a route to the top of Parriott Mesa. It's very fun. There's a couple places with fixed ropes to assist the steepest parts. Sorry you missed it.
crap! that sucks, i'll re do it some other time
You’re a braver soul than I
What’s some peaks near capitol to do on a trip?
well I've only done all the 14ers in CO, so if you're looking them there are a handful in the Elks but they are generally some of the tougher ones. As for smaller hikes and peaks I'm not a good resource living in AZ. But I have videos up on almost all the 14ers
Thanks for the video. Using Moab as a base, I'm thinking that might be the "best" area in Utah to explore and hike from? A lot of options.
I have like 20 more videos coming from this trip and have done much more around Moab, so it's a great area as you can incorporate the national parks, other hikes around Moab, rafting/kayaking on the river, and then hikes in the La Sals and Abajos during the summer. I personally am partial to the Zion/St George/Kanab area
Great hike! You make it sound so easy. it looks like anything but that. Is this a popular hike? I did not notice anyone else around. Thank you so much for sharing. You are the "man".
It's short (it's on alltrails) but steep. It was 30 degrees, raining, and Thanksgiving week, so guessing that explains the lack of people, although I would think most nice days in the shoulder seasons would only have a couple of people on it per day
You oughta do a slot canyon since your in the area
in what area? I was in Moab several weeks ago, but I have videos on many of the well known slots in the Grand Staircase area (Peekaboo, Spooky, Brimstone, Zebra, Tunnel, Red Breaks) and then Buckskin Gulch, etc. Is there a specific one you want to see?
@ had no idea I oughta check those videos out! only other solid one in the area I know of that you didn’t mention is blue John through the west fork and the final slot that one dude got trapped in it’s a pretty spectacular canyon just a tiny bit technical
Yet another great video! Thank you Question, Have you ever done Mazatzal Peak? Part trail and part off trail to the peak. Might make a good video.
I have a video on the loop around Matzatzal but have not summitted it. It's on my list
I was there about 20 years ago on a 10 day RV trip.... great memories of Canyonlands and camping at remote sites!
Fantastic scenery! The rocks look very slippery. Thank you for sharing.

@@HikingEngineer Just a 12 second RUclips video.

Great video! Love this hike and you got all the best parts. For anyone who cannot hike this, this is the next best thing!
thanks! I got lots of hikes on my channel!
@ will be checking them out!
Ugh, hate it when people carve into the rock! Makes no sense to me to ruin nature... It's such a cool arch
yeah very accessible too
I remember this hike…
