Nate, the cutting out seems very similar to my WL Toys K989 1/28th rally cars LiPo low voltage detection. It cuts power, but steering still works. Feel the ESC and motor right after it cuts off (maybe just get a finger close to it, instead of actually touching) to see how hot, or if you have one of those infared non-contact thermometers, check it.
I'm fairly certain it's the low-voltage cut-out, though, since you say it will become operational immediately after switching off then on again. The battery will recover a little after a few seconds. That is not long enough to cool down enough to reset thermal overload protection.
Try a better battery, and if no improvement, maybe the low-voltage detection circuitry in the ESC/Rx combo is defective.
Hope this helps. Have a great day and merry Christmas!
This is very helpful Jose! Thank you! We will test this with a better quality battery and see if that makes any difference ;)
PINNED!
My 12428 does the same thing with the stock 1500 mAH battery. Using a 2000mAH 30c works fine.
I was going to say the same thing. Being able to reset it by turning it off and on again leads me to believe it's a voltage issue. 👍🏻
Yep, I think you got it
You two kill me. 90% of the time you make me smile and sometimes just Lol. You're one of the few true reviewers on the Tube. I'm not a builder or big on modding. I'm a fixer if I have to. Love your vids. Thanks
Thank you so much Flyer :-D Hope you have an awesome Christmas weekend!!
If you find the names they put on these cars and trucks funny I suggest going to a fireworks store and reading the labels "out loud" of all the cakes and mortars, its a fun time!
The good thing about WLtpys is that they have so many parts
I can always tell how much you like a RC truck by the amount of slow-mo you put in the video :-)
Lol, this one deserved a little extra slow mo ;)
I think the WL toys shut off when the lipo battery gets just slightly low. My a959b does the exact same thing, still steers but the motor cuts out.
the same for me
Great review, so glad that there are folks like you guys who give real-life experiences where things don't work out of the box - which has happened to me, too - rather than editing it to make it look like the truck is running perfectly. :)
Realy worth it I love it
Wow powerfull one... The sleeper
LOL at woodpecker! Come now...you can't tell me that you haven't felt like doing that. Like with that Mi drone calabration.
This truck, except for the body, mine is a red car style body and says Supercar on the side, otherwise, it's identical to the truck I won from your channel in the "90K Subscribers 3 - Truck givaway!" I haven't run it as hard as you guys did this one, and I haven't had any issues. I love it and thanks again! JP
My 12428 does the same thing. I have to keep the throttle d/r trim wheel half way or it does this all the time. So I never get full speed but still have a blast bashing around.
So far I've bought the wltoys 12428 based on your video and the wltoys boat also based on your video I'm thinking this might be the third thx for your reviews
If you guys gets now it’d be really cool to see some buggies tearing it up and some ice drifting as well!!!!
Definitely a truck to buy,if the cut out problem can be fixed. I'm not sure it would be good in the warm, hot, melting heat here in calif. Even dialing down the throttle, or open hood scoop. If you can get a good fix,I might chance it. Fun drive,Nate good quadruple tumble across the road.great driving Abby. The truck handled everything except the design defect❓. Abby you need to brush up on your nature knowledge. 😉😆
ha ha Your channel is always fun to watch! Merry Christmas!
Thanks Grampa! Merry Christmas!
I miss this truck, they don't make anything in this exact size anymore. The buggies just aren't ideal for my 5yo who wants to drive it everywhere from the road to the rocks. It ran solid for almost 2 years before too many parts failed to be worth repair. Best $100AU I've ever spent.
This looked like it was going to be a nice one, but with this problem I'm not willing to pay $86 for it. Thanks for the review!
The battery looks like a Lithium Ion pack like they included with the 12428 (NOT a Li-Po) It's two 18650 Li-Ion batteries commonly used in vape mods/ e-cigarettes wrapped in plastic to make a pack. These Li-Ion packs seem to work pretty well if not run too hard. But, a similar sized 2s Li-Po with a deans connector performs way better. I run mine with an alarm attached to the balance port and the fun never ends ....til I run out of juice. The upside of upgrading to Li-Po is that you can up the Mah and the C rating all you want as long as there is room for the pack. You can even use a 3s pack if you don't run full throttle for more than a few seconds. Much past that you will smoke your electronics and find yourself ordering parts...So I hear anyway. I'm too chicken. I just run mine with 2500 and 2700 mah 2S shorty packs.
True to WL Toys name, the Truck seems AWESOME!
Nate is rocking that beard. The truck looks sweet. Good video guys
ooohhh another WLtoys land vehicle! too bad it doesnt come with lights and hard plastic case. but hell that looks cool!
I think it really is overheating. some 12428 units have that problems too. it only needs a bigger heat sink I think, with a fan maybe.
Nate cut a square hole in the windshield so air can go across the receiver esc combo if it has a lexan body
Not a bad idea! Thanks for the great tip!
Who else gives a thumbs up before watching the RC Saylors videos?
it is an easy fix just refill the blinker fluid and reset the uranium core.!
And an active cooling solution for the flux compensator!
That is hilarious!
You guys make a great rc couple, love ALL your vids especially the ground vehicles 👍
Thanks Bill
Bill Johnson I Def like your videos
over heating makes sense being that price, its probably over geared to get that speed . Looked to be a 540 size motor and esc receiver combo same as the Wltoys 12428 with the same battery too , i bet if you look at the pinion gear you'll find a bit bigger one on this one , so its working harder and pulling more amps and making more heat ,but going faster tell it over heats
Yes truck vid
Here's what I know about wltoys. Awesome cars, poor electronics. If you buy these with intentions of upgrading , you will like wltoys. Things that go this fast need better electeonics. I love em!
Thumbs up for the bonus footage at the end. I also vote LVC For cutting out.
Thanks Mark :)
The same thing happens to my Wltoys a959. This happens when the battery is basically dead. When you turn it off then on, it resume s but will stop again when the car realizes the battery state. I would still recommend this car because that is how they are designed. The same thing happens to some other rc's and it is not and issue
That truck is awesome for a 12th scale. Looks more like a 10th. Great vid. Thumbs up
Well, that's a shame because if it wasn't for that you could definitely get much more then $75 of fun from that truck. Thanks for the review and Happy Trucking!
That thing handled the ditch pretty good, and you can tell the leaves were thick. I have the same shut off problem with my 10428. Think I ain't gonna worry about it and spend a little more money and get an actual wraith.
Love how well this handled the leaves too!! Trust us, you'll LOVE the Wraith!!
Have a merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too derek!
chase some turkeys! lol I want to see that next
it looked like it used lithium ion batteries, I am not sure if they use a low voltage cut off. my suggestion would be to try and get an idea of the motor and esc temperature when it cuts off. it looks like you could add a cooling fan to the motor. another idea would be is to try it with out the body to see how the air flow effects it. The problem could be the amp draw on the esc.
I'd like to see some snow driving or crawling courses! I watch every video!
Speaking of the 12428.
That transmitter is the same one as the newer model 12428 that I got.
That's also the exact same battery as the other truck.
If you have the space in the battery bay, you might try the upgrade that I myself am going to apply, to fix the issue Jose noticed regarding the power.
I ordered a Floureon 2200 2S LiPo that's a bit longer and a tiny smidge thicker than the stock battery, but the 12428 has that longer space in the battery bay to fit it.
I'll be sure to let you guys know how that goes.
it willbe awesome if wltoys produces upgraded metal parts Kit for this model like they did for A979 K929 n sveral other models
Like most people are saying that it;s the LVC Cutoff and it has happen to me with some of my cars. I would think something is wrong because the servo is working but the motor is not. But that is when i first put the battery in. Then i put a fully charged pack in it works like it should. When that happens to me while i'm using it from a fully charged pack after 15 or 20 min depending on the Mah of the battery. I just stop and unplug it because i don't want to ruin my batteries. When that was happening to you guys. You could shut it off then on again and run a little bit more and it would happen again. I think that is a ESC thing. They are all different . That one might have a high LVC shut off. When you stop and shut it off and on again. Your resetting it. If you do that with a lipo you will probably ruin it. Just my 2 cents. I have been into RC for over 25 years. But i still could be wrong. Plus i think WLTOYS does those things because they know their products are gonna be abused and used bye people that are very new to the hobby.
Lol it’s great to see couples getting along great vid 👍
With all of the lipo batteries you have how do you store them ? I have watched a number of videos on the fire risk of lipo batteries and with the number of inadequate storage devices out there I was just wondering what you use to keep them in?
Merry Christmas everyone
Horraaa
Abby kicks ass with the trucks! I like how you guys really worked this one hard. Pretty good for a stock truck at that price point! The slow-mo hill footage is great. They could use it for a promotional video. Merry Christmas to you three (can't forget Popeye!) and to all out there in RUclips land :)
A few of my other WLs do that if I run em hard. I usually have to bump the throttle down a bit an it stops. Like u said, the wide open throttle seems to overheat it before long.
Thanks for the feedback Rob, that's probably what we'll have to do. No big deal, because this thing is a Blast!!
Very cool
7 minutes, 111 views, 16 comments (well, 17 with this one). Thumbs up from me. Stay warm kids.
Try driving it in a warmer environment or there is a trick I have heard RC plane enthusiast mention on forums where they heat up dry rice and use the rice to keep the battery warm before running don't remember the exact details of this technique though
for youre next rc truck view could u please review the hsp 94111 4wd truck it is fairly inexpensive and its really cool thanks!
that is not a bad rc truck.like the looks of it and climbs good to.
:-D
add a heat sink to the esc (old novak type heat sinks will work) and add a heat sink to the motor and see what happens
Sweet RC nice video
That style of motor heat sink I have found to help cool the motor after a run, but provides little cooling during a run. A fan on the motor cools the motor during a run.
Wow that's a really nice truck nice review nate and abby!
You all make good honest reviews!👍
Nice truck!!
Realy cool truck
:-)
What a shame I was liking that little truck, but i know that you have more on here which at slightly better, but what a great truck apart from the cutting out..And plus it made it through the Abby test in one piece
A very merry Christmas and a happy new year to you both. You are the best and may it long continue to give us information and entertainment CHEERS
Thanks guys. Same to you guys and as always nice vid
Always enjoy your videos. Same cut-out/return after toggle of power switch happens with my WLtoys 12428. Runs fine again after a full recharge of the battery. I recommend checking battery voltage at full charge and when it cuts out. Another test would be to replace the battery immediately when the cut out starts. If it runs fine with a new battery then it's just the battery sag. Let us know what you find.
After you do your, down to earth, review. Do you ever upgrade any of the RC's? I would love to see you and Abby do a few cars and drones. Go for it.
I have been driving rcs for about 10 years and I have had one do that it’s just the ESC overheating if U get a better esc then it won’t cut out.
Awesome! Thanks for the tip!
Awesome Little Truck!!
Very similar to the 12428. Would you recommend any larger tires to turn the 12428 into a more "Monster Truck" type of vehicle? I love mine but was wondering if I could get wider and/or taller tires to fit it? Thanks again for the great video.
Cool video.
Definitely ESC thermal protection. thats a good thing.
Could it possibly be the low voltage cut off that helps keep the battery from over discharge ??? I have several land vehicles that have this feature and with a program card you can set when it turns off or even set it so that won't turn off.
Its the battery when it gets low it cuts off. I figure that out with my WLtoys a979b and a959b had two batteries so when the other ran out I popped the other one in and away we went.
Thanks! You made me smile.
Glad to hear it James :) Have a great day!
Wow how awesome Wow
Very cool. I would say most decent 4wd vehicles with moderate clearance can get up the hill. It's all about the line taken. You and Abby have some good skills for negotiating the needed line. These are great starter vehicles for the kids, and just plain fun for everyone. Quick question. So, many of the hobby-grade vehicles are 2.4ghz. Do I need to get a complete transmitter/receiver set with a new remote? I was wanting to get a single controller for my different vehicles. I'd like to be able to run a truggy, then switch to a boat or another car/truck, without needing to change out the controller each time; just link up the next vehicle and go. Possible? Thanks.
The remote with the 10428 works on multiple vehicles and there is a receiver you can buy with it. Not sure how that would work with the all in 1 electronics in it though.
Great Video! You guys always bring the good stuff out.
Thanks for swinging by Keith!
Hey Nate any rc that only has a heat sync can over heat cuz heat syncs just ain't enough to cool it off all the time. It's most likely the motor not the esc rec combo. Just saying buddy.
rc saylors subbed on every acounnt I got so it has a sensor if it's to hot it will stop driving have on the newer 12428's
im just waiting for a good cheapish brushless truck to come out
If it is really cold it could be the lithium battery, in cold weather lithium batemteries can't deliver their full power and cause momentary droop and when the esc sees the droop it thinks the lithium battery is low and cuts power to protect the batter then when the droop stops the car will start moving again, that car must draw some pretty serious amperage for the the battery to not keep up in cold weather
Hi guys do they still make this truck and do they have spare parts I have one for 40 so I want to buy it
I saw the truck make the hill climb challenge, but it didn't look like Nate did. :)
Lol that's right ;) Only about half way up!
Nate/ Abby.... MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎁🎄!!!!
After it runs for awhile and dies but still turns the front wheels, turn it off. Dial back the throttle sensor on the remote just a tad. It seems like at full throttle it will cut off, but at like 90% throttle it will last a lot longer.
Thank you for this awesome tip Roy! We will definitely give it a shot :)
TheRcSaylors thanks for the WLTOYS 12428 coupon from Gearbest that I scored from you guys! It cuts out the same way.
Thank goodness a non-drone review. Sorry I’m just droned out.
Lol, fair enough rat! We'll have a little more mix to the line up soon my friend :)
So, I recently found your channel and going back and watching your videos. The slow motion on this with the music is awesome! Glad to be a patreon now! Love the channel! Wish i could make the 2018 RC fest. Should be epic!
Like okay. I just wanna say do u have any higher grade rc cars/buggys/Monster Trucks? I mean the turning off is probably the lipo saver
Good afternoon RC Saylor's this is James I just brought well I just received it yesterday in the mail box the wltoys 12402 I decided to run it on 3s it runs great on 3s and it pops wheelies I'm hoping you can run on 3s and post a video I don't have kind of cameras to post it on RUclips it would be nice preciate it thank you
Nate i just watched you flying you new drone you looked so happy flying it , Just in time for Christmas , I hope we see you flying it on your channel ..Merry Christmas
Not first but got here pretty fast. Cool little truck!
Is there any parts support for this? I can't find any.
Nice speed for the size
This pretty cool rc i did reviews on the 12403 the short course truck version i liked a lot
Wltoys makes great products.
Agreed :)
"WLtoys makes great products." Regarding the cutoff issue, a minimal amount of testing would have revealed the problem before releasing this truck into full production. That's a disappointing lapse by this generally solid company.
For the price point
Good job guys I’m glad y’all are really honest to bad it has a its problem like you said it’s just getting to hot, I want wish you guys a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year 🎆
what's the difference between brushed and brushless ?
Y'all need to do a video addressing the FAA drone registration. Everyone must now register their drones that weigh between.55 lbs to 55 lbs. If caught without certification, heavy fines will be issued. Everyone needs to be made aware of this.
We generally don't discuss the politics of anything on our channel, simply because they change SO OFTEN :( Not sure if we agree with them telling people they have to register, then telling people they don't have to register ... now it's back to registration again. Not Cool ... We DO However Promote SAFE Flying All The Time ;)
Wltoys trucks are the best. But why dont you like the a959 nate :( its awesome fun
That was awesome review.
Thank you so much!
Hi guys. I love your videos. I am from Spain. I have a s911 gptoys, but I want something better. Wltoys 12428 or wltoys 12402. Which one do you recommend? Any other? Congratulations on your channel.
Great video Nate an Abby , nice looking basher , let use know what you come up with !!!
Can you please do a video about lipo battery safety. I found your channel about a month ago and ordered a quad and a the feiyue fy10. They got here last week, but I have been scared to charge and start running them because of hearing about the fire and explosion dangers
"I have been scared to charge and start running them" Believe it or not, I was a casual quad flier (the micro kind, not the big outdoor kind) for 2 years before I even realized the danger of lipos. I was charging the battery of an H8 goo.gl/wRzNLH which I left in the quad. I fell asleep, and when I woke up, my apartment smelled smoky. I was looking everywhere, trying to find what was burning. Finally I found the H8 quad, all black and melted, and a heavy layer of black soot coating the counter! The battery was charred and disintegrated. A few items nearby were also blackened with melted spots.
mrdigital30000 just watch your battery and know how long it takes to charge. Don’t leave it charging over night and etc
