  • Tales of the Okefenokee was a dark ride at Six Flags Over Georgia, located in the park's Confederacy section (now Peachtree Square). It was based on the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris and told the story of the animals of the Okefenokee Swamp. The ride opened with the park in 1967 and operated for 13 years before closing after the 1980 season.
The ride had two very distinct incarnations in its history. The 1967 opening season version was what was described as the more "primitive" version of the ride, designed by Gene Patrick, who designed the beloved Spee-Lunker's Cave dark ride at Six Flags Over Texas.

@thrillvault257 Thank you for posting this. This is the first time I have seen this since I rode the ride 44 years ago. This brought back a lot of memories, and the professional filming really helped with the nostalgia and good memories. I hate that the ride was scrapped, but Monster Plantation and the current Monster Mansion are cool, as well. I loved how Six Flags over Georgia had a distinctly Georgia flavor to it in those early years with Tales of the Okefenokee, the Dahlonega Runaway Mine Train, and Lickskillet featuring Georgia Mountain scenery. I really miss those days, but change is inevitable, and it can be a great thing too.

Fun fact: the characters in the second version were built by Sid & Marty Krofft, creators of H.R. Pufnstuf!

I hate those carrots. And one of them caused the fire.

The carrots are probably the most unsettling part of the ride alone even when it’s not in terms of the fire.

Unfortunately this ride closed at the end of the 1980 season. It is most likely that the Mr. Bear animatronic was scraped for parts. However back in 2021 a RUclips user commented on a channel called Okee68 claiming to be a former six flags employee who saved some of the animatronics but it is unconfirmed if he really had the animatronics or if it was just a hoax.

@@thrillvault257 I think it is the poster's favorite parts-mostly the close-ups of the rabbits, four crows and watermelons. Those are some of my favorites too. I rode this ride as a six year old in the summer of 1980. It was my first trip to Six Flags over Georgia. We lived near Vidalia, and back then, a trip to Atlanta was like a trip to NYC today. It was a long drive and Atlanta was so much bigger than any of the cities where I grew up. This ride was my favorite, and the next time we visited Six Flags, which was about 1982, it had been replaced by what was called The Monster Plantation. I really enjoyed that too, particularly Miss Scarlett at the beginning and the Marshal. I see now that they are characters out on the streets welcoming visitors to Six Flags. That is very cool. I hope to get back and visit the newly updated Monster Mansion and see the new design and features. I have seen the videos, and the interior looks so modern.
