This is the Six Flags I remembered and love! It is nothing like this anymore. We had season passes last year and its heartbreaking to see it the way it is now. There is so much potential for ths park IF they would go back to their roots.
I was born in the early 80s. As a child I remember how clean and nice SFOG used to be. There were always young people working summer jobs and walking around sweeping and picking up trash. It was really nice! I haven't been in many many years but I remember it went downhill like the rest of Atlanta.
This is such a wonderful video and reminded me of my first visit around 1969 when I was 9 years old. It was such a magical time. The last time I went, however, was in the mid to late 80’s when sfog foolishly allowed hundreds of local college aged students in to stage a walking protest with signs and chants. They were very loud and took up the entire walkways. Paying tourists had to hurry to get out of their way. When I approached security asking why they didn’t kick them out of the park, he just shrugged his shoulders and said that there was nothing they could do. It was the most disappointing thing to witness and we left that day, never to return. Although, it doesn’t have as many exciting rides as Six Flags or Carowinds, I highly recommend Dollywood in Pigeon Forge for a park still true to its family Appalachian roots.
THIS! This brought back so many memories and made me smile. Also a bittersweet reminder how simpler life in general was back then, but also the industry.
My first trip was in 1975, I was 7 and it cost $7.00 to get in. We always went in the back entrance. The scream machine was my first real roller coaster. I've been going back ever since. The park's coasters are awesome! We watched the dolphins and divers, watched the show at the Crystal Pistol when we got too hot to walk around the park, and ALWAYS rode the sky buckets. Wonderful memories...
This is so amazing. My family visited Six Flags over Georgia together from 1974-1990. This brings back so many wonderful memories of how special those times were for me. Thank you so much for sharing.
My family are from Atlanta. We started going to Six Flags as soon as I was old enough in about 1972, age 5. My sister was 3. As a family we probably attended three or four times a year until my sister and I were 10 and 12 and then mom would actually safely drop us off at the park at opening and pick us up at closing. Sis and I had season tickets every year between 1980 and 1984 so we'd go multiple times each summer. We even remember John Schneider of The Dukes of Hazzard being in the Crystal Pistol show, covered in the last few minutes of this film. In the 80s Six Flags held concerts at sundown for major acts like Billy Idol, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and the Beach Boys. My favorite childhood memories include Six Flags---it was unforgettable and can never be repeated, even before 2020.
I was so young when I rode Jean Ribault that I barely even remember it. The same for the Okefenokee ride, before it became the Monster Plantation which turned into the Monster Mansion. I remember all those attractions that aren't around anymore, from the Jolly Roger ride to the tilt house to the Chevy Show to the Yahoola Hooler. As an adult, going isn't nearly as much fun as it was when I was a kid, because the park is no longer being kept up, and it just seems like a cash grab with nothing authentic, just licensed merchandise.
That seems to be fate of every theme park, unfortunately. They always lose their original theming in favor of licensed IPs and generic coasters. I think Monster Plantation was really the last attraction at SFOG that made an effort to adhere to the park's intended theme, and that was all the way back in 1981.
AHHHHHH !!!! THE MEMORIES !!!! I was born in 1968, and, my family used to go to SFOG once a year. Because of having the illness Reye's Syndrome in 1978, I have very few memories of my childhood. But, going to this Six Flags is something I will *NEVER* forget !!! One ride that wasn't in this video that I remember being terrified of is those big red sky buckets. Can't remember what they were called, but, even though I was terrified of them, I ALWAYS rode them with my Daddy and sister while my two brothers were off somewhere else in the park, and, our Mamma waited for us below cause she couldn't take the height. That was all back when it was actually safe to go off on your own if you were a kid. As I said: AHHH THE MEMORIES !!!!
I did not know that. That was probably the only remaining original ride which you could view most of the park in when you rode it. It *IS* quite sad things like this have to change so much. Have a wonderful day. TY for replying.
@@chunkztookyafoodI know your comment is 2 years old, but I can’t find the answer anywhere else lol, do you know why they removed them? Me and my family hadn’t been in a few years and when we went earlier this year I was wondering what happened?
Its so wild seeing this park look so presentable. The theming isnt too tacky, the park looks clean. Six Flags could have had a big destination park if they didn't decide to throw in the towel and become a budget park brand.
They really screwed themselves over with corporate IP-themed attractions and unabashedly-ugly architecture and signage. Virtually all theme parks are doomed to lose their soul in more or less this same way. I would say SFOG's decline in "thematic integrity" began when Castillo De Soto (the Spanish fort) was replaced with the "Pac-Man Play Fort" in 1983, if not even earlier, particularly when the pirate-themed area was added for the 1980 season.
I don’t know if it will make you feel better or worse when I tell you that you are 100 percent correct! I worked there from 79 to 83 and it was every bit as great as you are thinking. We weren’t paid worth a crap but the whole experience both in the park as well as the after hours off-property activities were the stuff of legends. You really were born too late as that period of time was like no other. I have not been back to SFOG in probably 15 years
I was one of the security guys that walked the park! I was in love with the dauphin trainer, Donna Baumgartner I’d love to see her again ! I was 21 yrs old then she was about my age!
It's not what you see and ride or do while your there it's what is left from your memories as time goes by , and what is as it was and remains in your heart as you live on , I grew up all my life with going to Six Flags Over Georgia it has been with me all the days of my life I can never let it disappear from my thoughts and prayers of being wonderful and a good place to have fun that what life is all about may SOG live on in the hearts of many generations😂😢😮😅
1977: a year of ends, and beginnings: it was the year Elvis Presley died, yet it was also a year of new, monumental beginnings: especially with Star Wars. Also, I'm WAY younger than when this video was shot but I actually don't mind looking back on nostalgia... Even if it wasn't my type...
Im not interested in SFOG, just the Okefenokee, so it's not a Christmas miracle for me, but it's still cool to see footage of stuff that is probably gone now.
I upload any pre-1983 SFOG documentaries I can manage to get a good rip of, regardless of whether they feature anything related to the Okee or not. I'm sure some of this stuff is of incredible value to at least someone out there.
I worked the Okee in 1974 and 1977 Phil Jones Read my book A LITTLE BOY IN UTOPIA GEORGIA. One of the last episodes is about working at SFOG. I have the entire Okee Soundtrack.
Aside from simply not being convenient to capture footage of, it wasn't exactly in flattering shape by 1977 and had largely been overshadowed by newer attractions.
From everything I've seen so far, the most valuable instance of the queue area appearing on film is in this 1967 souvenir film beginning at the 2:13 mark: ruclips.net/video/FHJMfWsm_Hw/видео.html Also, at the end of this folder, you can find a very short clip from a vintage home movie showing off some of the loading queue: jumpshare.com/b/6MzS8DeL80qN4TREpyfq
Both this film and the Okee footage are 480p, actually. The reason my "Accurate Audio Mix" appears as though it's 1080p is because I created it with a video editing program instead of directly ripping it from somewhere.
Yes, I can confirm that's from Injun Joe's Cave at Six Flags Over Mid-America. I would have replied much sooner, but RUclips hasn't really been up to par in notifying me of new comments lately.

Now it is run down and all the staff are rude and make it quite obvious they hate being there. It’s truly sad what it’s turned into.
You’re so right about it now
I still go at age 55 but only for the roller coasters

Six Flags Georgia was an awesome park back in the 70's....GREAT PLACE TO BE
This video kicked ASS!!!! One of the greatest places on earth.
This video is so tremendously good , I remember all ,every minute of this Six Flags era /decade I miss it way to much 😢 ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing this. Saw some familiar faces there and it brought back some good memories
This was such a good find. Thank you!
You have never lied!! This is a great find.
I worked at Six Flags the summer of I turned 18 (1981). Such memories.
Visited Six Flags many times in the 70’s, great memories..

Went there in 1977 with my folks as my aunt lived with her family at the time in Columbus. So we went there as was only three years old. Nice park.
Everything was better as a kid in the 1970’s.More innocent time.Kids didn’t grow up so fast and become more cynical to soon
I miss the wheelies and the Log flume. The parachute are gone whoo!
Log Flume was my favorite ride 😎
Does anyone else remember the sky hook?
Yes. Rode it in about ‘75 or ‘76. Good memory.
Yes! Never rode it but always remember spotting it on the horizon coming down I-20. That was always the exciting signal that you were almost there!
Sure do 😎
I was born in the wrong time. Sixflags back then seems so much fun. I currently work at SFOG and it’s nothing compared to this video

Oh this is cool I thought the fandom died after the footage was found so that’s good.
Most Okefenokee discussion occurs on the Discord server nowadays. It was created back in August, and it's been surprisingly active since September.
3:51 Jean Ribault's Adventure?
Correct.
Yep and so hard to find film of it

Hello what happened to you?

Why Do they leave out the Okefenokee
Aside from simply not being convenient to capture footage of, it wasn't exactly in flattering shape by 1977 and had largely been overshadowed by newer attractions.
Okee, what’s the Jungle Cruise/La Salle thing?
Jean Ribault's Adventure, 1967-1981. For some reason, the title was consistently misspelled as "Jean Ribaut," with no L.
@17:32 That Dude had definitely held more than a few in his throat.

I just went today so fun
What happened to the big ship at Six Flags? I don't see it
The pirate section was added for the 1980 season, three years after this documentary was made.
This was such a great place...went there so many times
Cool
