Whenever you catch yourself taking classical music (or any music) too seriously, just think of the following scenario: a spaceship full of aliens arrives at Earth and sees a bunch of hairless monkeys running around, and stops one to ask it: "What is the purpose of your existence?" And you (and I) would say: "I ... uh ... I ... blow into a pipe." And the aliens look at one another and go, "Oooooookay," right before they leave skid marks getting the hell out of this solar system. (Just imagine what their reaction would be if they stopped a conductor and asked them the same question: "I find a bunch of people blowing into pipes, stand in front of them and wave a stick, and then take all the credit.") BTW, also check out "Salut Salon" and the competitive quartet. Love love love! Hint: don't piss off the cellist: ruclips.net/video/BKezUd_xw20/видео.html
Your down to earth attitude helped me get over the fear of playing a professional concert flute. I have always loved playing music with simple flutes and 6 hole world flutes but thought the concert flute was too pretentious and overcomplex, but so far I'm loving the range and expressiveness I can get with my student flute I bought. Thanks!
Hahaa, I'm german and I never heard about this crazy word fünfstündigeopernaufführungsangst 😂 but I know that feeling that it described... perfekt! Thank you again for this nice video 👍
I grew up watching Victor due to having two piano professors as parents who thought he was amazing. Growing up, I never wanted to take classical music too seriously and its because of him. Now, as a teacher, I make all lessons as fun and funny a possible. We learn better through laughter!
JustAnotherFlutist my parents had the vhs set! Hahaha ype an awesome person and I'm so glad I found you here on RUclips. You inspired me to pick up my flute after not playing since I was 18.
Another classical music comedian hybrid is Peter Schickele, creater of "PDQ Bach", along the same vein as the two you've mentioned, and a composer when not appearing as his alter ego.
JustAnotherFlutist oh I Know Joanna I know trust me I've been watching him for a long time it never fails he's 100% real like you in the flute world your 100% honest from reviews to sit down videos to instruction vids Love you Joanna
What's always fun for me is to listen to modern composers ( especially film music) such as Phillip Glass, Phillip Wesley, Ludovico Einaudi, and Yiruma. OMG I love Victor Borge! Have you seen the video that he was playing Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2? That Video is so funny! I love Anna Russell too!😃❤️🎹😂😂😂😂
Ohhhhhhh, you listen to Yiruma too!!! My boyfriend introduced me to his lovely work (I would say officially, since I'd heard his music in random other places before, but just didn't know it as Yiruma). And yes!!! That's the duet I was talking about!!!! 😂
JustAnotherFlutist There's a piece of Yiruma's that was written for Jasmine Choi and it's beautiful. It's called Wait There and it's a bonus track on her Claude Bolling Album😊
I got the full Borge DVD set from PBS ~! haha. He was epic, major music an major comedy. Anna Russel's coloratura aria "Canto dolciamente pippo" is one of my favs !
I love this so much! Edutainment is the best, I love the vlog brother's projects for the way that they do that on so many topics! I make classical music themed comedy videos on my channel, and it's so much fun! (I also study in the same city as TwoSet Violin, so that's pretty cool) :)
Hi Joanna. Is everything alright? I hope so. Now that you talked about the not so serious part of being a classical musician, I'd like to hear about the process of deciding what to do in interpretation when you start studying a piece from an Urtext edition. My Piano Professor at USP is very nice, and let me use some editions with interpretative sugestions (such as Alfred and Schirmer), but I've been in masterclasses where they ask for Urtexts and they ask how you decided to interpret the piece. Since, I'm in love with your channel, I'd like to hear it from you. Thank you.
You are sooooo Adorable Joanna!! Can you please review more flutes by Azumi? Plus you aren’t the only one who loves David Erick Ramos :) i always watch his videos ;) Can you also continue the Series where you teach your mom how to play the flute? Your mommy is adorable! Again I really love your videos. They are super informative ;3 Keep this up sweetie :3 PS: Pun of the day! What kind of instrument do skeletons play? The TromBONE! Get it? Trombone? LOL 😂
+CreepyMiku :3 Aw, thanks so much! Sure, I'll look more into the Azumis, they're wonderful flutes! My mom and I are currently thinking about what to do next! 😊
Go looking for Danny Kaye. Comedy actor but also makes fun of classical music. The one that had me laughing till my ribs hurt was the skit about the 90 year old conductor, done live with a full orchestra.
I'm so sorry Joanna, I was about to type something serious about the entire "classical music is super fancy" issue and contribute to this discussion like a proper professional flutist, but then you mentioned Dan Howell and I just lost it xD Here's a high five from another fan!
I think I need The Idiots Guide to Music Theory. I tried to take a class but had a bad teacher (long story, but let's just say he told me I would never pass his class because I would not neglect my newborn for his class) but there are things I have no idea what they are, I couldn't identify a diminished minor 7th if my life depended on it lol I've heard some Victor Borge but haven't followed him. I love classical music but I'm not one of those who eat, sleep, and breathe classical music. I took a music theory class twice with two different instructors. The first one was all about classical music and all he taught was classical music, and very serious about classical music. He made it boring and not fun. The second one explored other music, we compared and contrasted. I think the best was Led Zepplin and Beethoven LOL I do think classical music is more enjoyable if you look at it in a more light-hearted way rather than being so serious about it.
The more you study music the more you realise how not serious and that there's a sense of humour in classical music. For example, I read a serious academic text that had a chapter explaining that the only way Handel could get this diva to sing in his opera he had the threaten to throw her out of a 3 storey window
I think I have Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory. There are some very funny music history books by David W. Barber. Satire is a most ancient and noble art.
The more I learn the more I am grateful for my piano teacher. She never allowed me to take classical music too seriously. She taught me how to appreciate the people behind the music. For example I learned the original manuscript Fur Elise when I was crushing hard on a boy because that is what the song is about. When we were done she asked me about the boy to which I said "boys that require Beethoven aren't worth the trouble." 😂😂😂

+Janis Cortese Hahahahaha! 😆
That's silly :)
Yep. :-)
Great vid, Joanna (As always). Loved Victor Borge and Anna Russell. Although, for me, my musical comedic hero is Peter Schickele, aka PDQ Bach. ☺️
We were talking about the Anna Russell Ring Cycle at work today!!! It's so good!!!!
SHE'S AMAZINGGGGG
Your story with Victor Borge is just like mine! I love your videos because I can relate to the love music and being real! You are a huge inspiration!
Aw, thank you!!! :D That is a huge compliment, made my day!
JustAnotherFlutist Aww. Np. We musicians stick together. I jusf started playing in my high school's wind ensemble and I am so excited!

Was actually thinking during the entire video about how much I particularly liked the lighting and exposure... :D (and also your earrings!)
+sarah7cktc YAY! I'm still working on the lighting, but it's awesome to hear that it's looking better. I'll get there some day 😊
Hahaa, I'm german and I never heard about this crazy word fünfstündigeopernaufführungsangst 😂 but I know that feeling that it described... perfekt! Thank you again for this nice video 👍
What a wonderful word! Hahahaha, and thanks!!

+Tiffany Parker You're so right! I also now own the complete DVD collection of Victor Borge! 😍
JustAnotherFlutist my parents had the vhs set! Hahaha ype an awesome person and I'm so glad I found you here on RUclips. You inspired me to pick up my flute after not playing since I was 18.
You're *
+Tiffany Parker Wah, what an honour! I hope you're enjoying your flute adventures thus far! 😊
JustAnotherFlutist yeah I figure I should get back to it after 13 years. Lol
Another classical music comedian hybrid is Peter Schickele, creater of "PDQ Bach", along the same vein as the two you've mentioned, and a composer when not appearing as his alter ego.
+DrQuizzler YES! I've heard of him, I need to look into him some more!
Yes, Schickele is amazing. Apparently, he is the same crazy character in person as he is on the shows. LOVE his zillions of skits!
I saw him live quite a few years ago. The weirdest instruments and the goofiest tunes...
LOL Joanna the Dan Howell reference though killed me 😂😂😂
Man. His content is just TOO REAL, you know? 😆
JustAnotherFlutist oh I Know Joanna I know trust me I've been watching him for a long time it never fails he's 100% real like you in the flute world your 100% honest from reviews to sit down videos to instruction vids Love you Joanna
Thank you, I learn so much from you!
+Louis Frayser You're absolutely welcome!
on the music books, I recommend the audiobook: "How to listen to and understand great music" by the great courses.
Awesome, thanks!

OMG that's awesome!!!
You should take it seriously. Just like Ling Ling. practice 40 hours a day or get out!
I love twoset violin even though i'm a flutist but they are sooo relatable
They have a really hilarious piccolo skit 😆

+DramaLlamaCarl Ahahahahaha! I feel like Dan and Phil always reduce us phans to little blubbering puddles 😆
thaaankk you... !! classical music is JUSTTT another genre
Can you make a video about counting harder passages?Ones that contain tithed sixteenth notes and counts on off beats.
I did mention how I do stuff like this in my "Practice with Me! - Fantasy on a Theme of Beethoven (Doppler)". Check it out!
Finland, yahtzee! I live in Finland. Music, languages, adventure. Mostly music.
+Jari Satta Woohoo, Finland! 😊
RUclips “Smothers Brothers dueling banjo” and enjoy the first video that comes up.
Hahahahaha, I will! 😆

How true! Mozart was worse 😆
+JustAnotherFlutist oh god, yes he was
My fav comedy classical music bash is vs Pachelbel's Canon. ruclips.net/video/JdxkVQy7QLM/видео.html
Would you recommend an Azumi 2 for a serious flutist? It looks really nice for its price range.
Yes! I actually did a review on it (Azumi 1 & 2)! You should be able to find it in my "FCNY Sponsored Reviews" playlist! :D
You can also add Burkart Resona R150 and R300 to that list :)
Haha, added!
Ahh die Fünfstündigeopernaufführungsangst!
Wer kennt's nicht?
Hey
Hello! :)
I think I have Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory. There are some very funny music history books by David W. Barber. Satire is a most ancient and noble art.
Hi
Hello! :D
DAN HOWELL!!!!
🙃🙃🙃🙃

Classical musicians are all just playing in a cover band. And we don't allow cover bands in here.
BURN...

🙃
JustAnotherFlutist by the way, one of my cousins just got her flute yesterday 😄
