Problems with Drugs and Crime in Kensington Ave, Philadelphia
In Philadelphia as a whole, violent crime and drug abuse are major issues. The city has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas. The drug overdose rate in Philadelphia is also concerning. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50%, with more than twice as many deaths from overdoses as homicides. 2 Kensington's high crime rate and drug abuse contribute significantly to Philadelphia's problems.
Because of the high number of drugs in the neighborhood, Kensington has the third-highest drug crime rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia, at 3.57. The opioid epidemic has played a significant role in this problem, as it has in much of the rest of the country. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed in the United States over the last two decades, and Philadelphia is no exception. In addition to having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% of Philadelphia's overdose deaths involved opioids, and Kensington is a significant contributor to this figure. This Philadelphia neighborhood is said to have the largest open-air heroin market on the East Coast, with many neighbors migrating to the area for heroin and other opioids. With such a high concentration of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have focused on the neighborhood in an attempt to address Philadelphia's problem.

In my country, Turkey, the state helps the homeless and drug addicts, and it certainly does not leave them in this situation. Why are these people not taken care of in a giant country like America?
Because most don't want help. They want to keep using drugs and keep the crime rate up smh 😢 There is help for those who want it but we can't force people to value life. That's their choice..

I get tired of people commenting that “someone” needs to do “something” about this sorry state of affairs. The “someone” needs to be the drug takers themselves, they need to develop a thicker skin & go seek help that is out there & available to them but the majority choose to continue down the same path of degradation. Never ever take even one drug you may be offered or given, say NO…I’ve been around folk who take drugs at times in my life but I’ve stayed strong & never gone down that route hence I’ve always remained clean. The Lord helps those who help themselves.
I wish I could say the same, but in the late 1990's - 2002 I had a bad problem with opiates. Eventually I checked myself into a treatment facility, and between in-patient and outpatient and a TON of hard work ever since, I've stayed clean for 21 years. It was not a fancy, on-the-beach facility, it was a tough, no frills facility. You have to be willing to put in the work, both physical and mental. No one else can do it for you. But I think a lot of these people are just not interested in doing it.

No, of course not - 'an' open drug market is not OK. I was referring to the notion that people think other people need to do something to get these people out of addiction. While cracking down on the Kensington dealers is in fact, imperative, in truth the addicts will just migrate somewhere else to get the drugs. What I was saying was that the addicts themselves have to want to get themselves off the drugs. That's the only way it works. BTW, no need for name calling. I'm happy to have an intelligent, friendly discussion on the matter with you if you like.

So, for how many decades has this been going on? Since inception of this neighborhood? The earliest photos I came across were from 2009.
What has Philadelphia done since then? Are there any channels covering these issues in Chicago?

They are attracted to Kensington from many places because of the availability of drugs and that they can openly use them.
In a country where money is the vision, then those who fail to save it, find no reason to live anyway and destroy themselves. A country that pays billions of dollars to intervene in other countries, cannot find a budget to give its citizens a future worth living for. A country whose future is behind it .

Even though this video keeps saying homelessness is the problem, but they are really missing the true problem. It is addiction. Anyone who is addicted cannot even function on a basic level. Look at them. They sleep standing up on the sidewalk. It is extremely difficult to help an addict become a fully functioning average citizen. They have to really want out of that lifestyle, and they need to have a strong will, and strong outside support.

Actions and consequences. At some point, these grown adults need to be held accountable for the decisions they make. It is up to them to seek help. There are plenty of programs but they have to stay off drugs in order to be successful in those programs

Many are out there because there is little to no affordable housing, as well as not receiving enough financial support from social services. Not all of these people are out there because they have intentionally put themselves out there. There are so many contributing factors to increasing homelessness, as expressed in this video. I completely agree that many of these people need mental health rehab. Psychological trauma can be highly related to drug use.
