I met a lady from this area she took her kids to nice places/ libraries etc. In her words "U CANT BE WHAT U CANT SEE" Those words have stuck with me. This lady raised her kids to all be successful and get out of the ghetto. Beautiful women with beautiful powerful words.

It's hard to see such a genuine person trying to fight bitterness after having help thrown in his face time after time.
It looks like the responsibility he feels is weighing on him, all the more amazing that he keeps going and keeps helping regardless.

Thank God I got arrested one day and that was the end for me and have been clean for almost 10 years and now working with a recovery organization. Thanks for bringing awareness to this area. Philadelphian here, first off, amazing video. Secondly, whats so sad about Kensington is how preventable it was/is. Only 10 minutes east of Kenzo and you're in Fishtown, which is like a micro San Fran inside Philly. 10 minutes south and you're in Northern Liberties where concert venues and very strong communities hold together, and 10 minutes west is Temple University. With all that said, Kensington is only about 2% of Philly, and our leaders and citizens simply don't care.

Ridding them of any help does not rid someone of their addiction, it just makes their life tougher and more dangerous. That pulling yourself up by the boot straps mentality has never helped anyone, it's ignorant and selfish and comes across like they're putting their self on a pedestal, their way is the only way. It's almost like they just don't care and act like that's a way to help when really they just don't want to deal with it.

I agree with the lady with the pink thing wrapped around her head. As a former heroin addict, having been on the needle for 11 years, the kindness that was shown to me by a lady who took me in off the street and fed me and clothed me and didn't ask me for a penny for years gave me 1, the breathing room I needed to process everything, and 2, just the right kind of guilt trip! Her kindness ended up wearing me out and I finally broke. That 82-year-old crazy old lady killed me with kindness and made me want to be better. And then, wanting to be better made me want to GET better. I PRAISE JESUS FOR THAT LADY!

I often think about all the people I dropped off there, and how many of them probably died. I know they'd find a way regardless, but I can't help but feel a slight guilt. It really is the most surreal and depressing place you will probably ever experience. Even worse than skid row. Lost a lot of friends I grew up with living in this area. But there are worse place on earth. Yes. I’ve seen it myself. Brazil, worse. Skid row in Brazil is on another level. Worse than here. India. Wow slums of India is worse than here. Way way worse. No toilet dead body floating on river where people ask defecate and wash themselves at the same time. There’s a ringleader that owns beggars and some women chop their arm off to beg more effectively. They came up to my driver while I was there and he told me not to open the window. I’ve never seen such sad situation. Then loaning babies. Yeah people loan babies so that they can effectively beg more money. Slums of India is the worst I’ve seen.
East Hastings in Vancouver is also pretty bad. Drugs and prostitution capital of the Western Canada. I’ve lived not too far from there. Obviously not right near it but I could walk there in 30 min. The worst place in Canada. Even worse than Toronto in my opinion where I grew up.

South Street district, Old City, China Town, Center city, Eakins Oval, Northern Liberties, Boat House Row, East Falls, Germantown, Mount Airy, Mannyunk, Chestnut Hill. Penns Landing, West Oak Lane, Society Hill, Roxborough, Fairmount, (I am sure I am missing a few) Not to mention the outside areas of Willow Grove, Jenkintown, Elkins Park, Narberth, City Line ave and Bryn Mayr. Philly still has many many good places to visit, eat at, enjoy, stroll and take in. I lived in Philly for 20 years, never had anything bad happen to me or my family. I seen it all my life thru generational yet I have smoked weed and no desire to experiment .. it’s the most devastating seeing your beautiful child turn from a loving fun great mum to a addict .. it is devastating all the love in the world can’t save them .. as a parent it’s like your running around with a safety net trying to catch them or just cleaning up the trauma they have left behind .. prayers

It's just ABSOLUTELY SOOOO CRAZY to me to think that when I was in active addiction and when I lived up North, Kensington was one of the few places that I would go and cop my dope...I'm TRULY BLESSED-TRULY GRATEFUL that I am now 14 months sober today!!! I know the struggles of addiction cuz I've been there!!! I sadly wasted about 15-20 years of my life, chasing the high and finally just one day, I had enough and I put the needle down!!! I go to a drug class 3 days a week STILL, Today, I go to AA/NA Meetings atleast 3-4 times a week, I have a Sponsor that I call every day and I'm just SO GRATEFUL to still be alive!!! There are still ALOT of empty seats in the AA/NA Meetings so, always keep in mind that some people were NOT as fortunate as me to be able to get another chance and make it back...God Bless everyone!!! Much Love✌️

Good for you Richie, just proving to the world that it's all based on a single decision and that it's possible for everyone with the will to live. The best decisions in life are usually the hardest ones as well. I've never done dope but was hooked on party drugs (weed, MDMA, coke etc) in my late teens to early 20s, now edging toward my 40s been done with them a long time. It's good to live a healthy clean life, but not gonna lie, you still miss chasing the high sometimes and just gotta remind yourself why it's better to take a step back and appreciate everything you have in the moment, even if it's a bad moment at least you will remember it the next day lol

I met a girl in rehab who lived in the suburbs... Abington. About a month after getting out of rehab, I had allready got myself back in the shit, to the point I was allready on the run from parole. The girl I had met from rehab told me I could come and stay with her, so I packed a garbage bag full of clothes and shit and I drove 4 hours there. She was living w/ her parents..nice house, good family, ect. I was only there about 4 weeks. Every day, we took the bus to go get on the L and got off at Kensington & Somerset.. we got our dope, we walked a couple blocks and got high. In less than 4 weeks I had overdosed 4 times, watched her OD once, watched her friend OD, got involved in a hit and run and then drove over to Jersey all f****d up on dope & zannies, just to pull into a parking lot to ask some dudes how the f**k do I get back to Philly. Those dudes ended up being cops. I was arrested, did a few weeks in Burlington County and ultimately went Upstate after being transferred back to my county. The 2 years I did upstate ended up saving my life. 10 years clean, living a normal life that I wouldn't give up for anything. The girl I met in rehab wasn't as fortunate. 7 years ago, she overdosed and that time she didn't come back. If Kensington brings you in, your lucky to make it out alive. That's not some morbid, scary quote to make a person "think," it's the f*****g truth. It's a God damn shame that the people with enough power to do something about that place-dont f*****g do it. Nothing changes if nothing changes. RIP Em.

I is a sad situation around the country. On my way to work, across the street from Independence Hall and The Liberty Bell - I see this and it hits me in the heart. Tourist visit our beautiful city and don't understand the "zombies" they witness; they just quickly get away and try to block out what they just saw.

I’ve been on suboxone or methadone for just shy of 10 years now. Was completely taken over by oxycontin, then hydromorph, then fenty. Opiates were something that just jived with me physically and emotionally like i was made for it and it was made for me. From my first time to my last it made me feel alive. When i first tried to taper down and actually truly quit the withdrawal was so powerful it scared me to death. It was such a visceral reaction mentally and physically - it felt like i had a serious bout of depression, with food poisoning, influenza, and a broken spine while having my body torn apart by dogs. One time I vomited for 24 hours straight until my stomach lining tore and continued to vomit blood. I tell ya… it was a lot of rock bottom suffering but finally I started to win the fight and now im about 5 years sober. Im unfortunately still on suboxone to this day but completely stable and no more mental addiction, only physical. So technically they call me a drug dependent, not addict anymore. Terrible disease. I now have 2 kids, a career job and own my home and property. Just need to manage that last step of tapering off suboxone, but easier said than done.

Have you tried Kratom? It will help look into it. It's 100x better than any pharmaceutical medicine on the market it's a plant and a cousin of the coffee plant. Just look into it kratom works. Also it helped me to get off opiates too.

That was a pretty accurate description of the withdrawals. Just absolutely unreal. I truly am thankful for being able to wake up in the morning and not feel like absolute shit. I love weed. And kratom didn’t do SHIT for me for the withdrawals. Kept hearing that it was a miracle herb and that it’ll just take all the withdrawals away. NOT FOR ME. So that just added to the frustration of withdrawals. Just a horrible horrible time.

I used for over 10 years.. i quit multiple times and always relapsed for one reason or another... i finally went to suboxone and have never had more success in my life. i've been sober for just over 4 years now. no cigarettes, zero alcohol. the suboxone makes my brain normal again besides for some side effects like emotional numbness, occasional constipation. I have lowered my dose from 12mg down to 6mg to reduce side effects..i may go down to 2mg or off of it.. but beyond 2-4mg is where things get very tough. But i have successfully tapered off completely before for about 2 months (final dose was like 0.10-0.2 mg you must use a milligram scale for measurement) and had cravings even after most of the acute physical withdrawals were over. the post acute withdrawals can last almost a year so the best way is to go very very slow, but in order to do that you really have to be extremely disciplined about not taking more than what your taper plan is.. I always take less than i am prescribed so i have extra. i always keep it with me so somebody does not steal it. stuff like that is the reason i want to taper off.. but all in all my life is way better than before.. i used to shoot 1/2 gram of black tar every day and now i am in college working on an engineering degree.. so to say the suboxone helped me would be a massive understatement. i dont recommend methadone to anyone unless you are using it for harm reduction... but dont see too many issues with staying on suboxone forever. with the crisis going on you wont find any issues getting a prescription. But if you are trying to emotionally wake up a lower dose or coming off is usually required.. but you open yourself up not only to positive feelings but negative feelings and cravings as well... i know its possible because i have done it before.. but you first need to be off all nicotine, and sure AF no alcohol... once you are very stable financially and physically you can do it.. my issue was i was broke and had a crap job when i tapered off... plus i was vaping and drinking... so i failed... but I plan on giving it another shot once i finish college and am stress free... until then i am an easy patient for my doctor, i go in 4 times per year for refills and that's it. biggest downside is fear of losing it and the emotional numbness... but it is vastly outweighed by the positive side effects.

    • @CL-yp1bs
      @CL-yp1bs Год назад +1

@@KassAss420 Kratom you have to buy large amounts online and eat it by the spoonful.. only issue is you'll have withdrawals from that stuff (i've had them)... its no joke when you extract it and take it in large amounts... i always recommend gradually smaller amounts of suboxone to taper off, kratom is expensive, nauseating to drink a bunch of and difficult to dose consistently.

That's one of the most underrated realities with addiction that a lot of people don't realise. The US sends them into detox centres, but all detox centres do is treat you through the withdrawal stage, it doesn't actually continue through to post-care treatment to help continue fighting against the cravings.
Took me 3 years before I got my cravings under control, and 5 years before I could mix with society again - it's genuinely a very long process and a hard one at that.
What they've done in Portland, by decriminalising it all, is never going to solve the addiction issues, because the moment people come out of detox and are thrown back into the city (which has turned into an open market drug vendor), people are going to cave in to their cravings and will be back using all over again.
These people need to be sectioned and put into secure facilities with sufficient medical staff overseeing their process. But the US doesn't run a public healthcare system, it has a health sector, so none of that actually exists which is why the fentanyl epidemic in the US is going to continue to spread and grow exponentially.

I have to agree with the ladies towards the end of the video. Giving addicts resources like food, shelter, truly does not help in a way that actually just enables and prolongs the addiction. I myself am a recovering alcoholic it's tuely all about choices and when the addict/alcoholic really does truly want to change. Being enabled with all sorts of help and free stuff I feel just prolongs getting help.

I'm 8 years clean & used to be on the streets in Kensington with my husband. We got clean just as fetty was hitting really hard & we were fortunate enough to never encounter tranq.
My mom asked if she could see Kensington, so I took her, with the warning that she was definitely going to cry. She had never been on the train so we hopped on the el & I've never seen her look so sad. She cried to me about how she felt knowing that I used to be there. It really broke my heart.
Thank God I got out. It's funny too that even after I got clean I stayed in the city for years. She couldn't understand how I could live just up the road in Frankford & be able to stay clean. But if you want it bad enough you can do it.
