I just read the first Silo book, and the TV show is actually a lot better. The TV series adds more characters and subplots, lot more subtext in all character interactions, and it makes the characters much more nuanced. Bernard in the books, for example, comes across as a mustache twirling villain almost immediately. He has much less interaction with Jules, and removes her from the Sheriff position right after he takes power. The parts where he works with Jules and even helps her as the Sheriff are unique to the show. Jules's backstory and motivations are also more fleshed out in the TV series, and that makes her choices and actions seem more logical and relatable. The show writers are really doing an amazing job!

Tim Robbins also played a main character in the movie "City of Ember". Also set in an underground post apocalyptic city that has forgotten its past and is cut off from the surface, and with a failing energy grid. There he plays as a good guy that is that movie's version of a flame keeper. It was a delightfully jarring shock to see him in such a dark role reversal in the similar setting of "Silo". The man is indeed versatile and a top notch actor who also sells it and gives it his all :)

Good choice! I completely forgot about "City of ember". I'd say top ten performance for Robbins in that one. It never really registered just how many good films he's been in until I started working on this one. He's been at it for a while now.

Silo is replete with incredible actors playing enigmatic characters who are almost universally complete and utter bastards in one way or another.

It IS interesting that even Jules is sort of an asshole George was a user. The original Mayor was effete, the deputy was a brutal jerk. I think Allison & Holston were pretty cool, but....pretty dead, too.

@@BigDLisGrippin I think the story is intended to compel us to consider their environment as a character that causes asshol-ery in everyone. but that's just one based bastard's opinion.

Happy Holidays, Nautilus. I believe he might like the "Power" of being the Mayor. I think that's because now he has the ability (perhaps) to create Order. The booze is a bonus. Bernard has an ordered mind, and demands order. I agree that he's a cog.
The 18 key suggests that they are in a community that only he, of the inhabitants of the Silo, knows about. Is it organized around a council of equals? Or is it organized around a central figure that we still haven't seen?
Is Bernard a villain? He's definitely an antagonist, and has been shown to be ruthless, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's a "Nyah AH AH!" moustache twirling villain. I think we need more perspective to tell. Common is just trying to do the job he was given. I don't know if he's a villain either.

  • @captaincorona9488
    @captaincorona9488 Месяц назад

Yes. I agree. Bernard is very complex character. I do not think that he is an outright villain of the show. He is definitely the main antagonist, though serving the citizens of the silo or so he thinks. There is more to him which will be more explored in season 2.

    Hudsucker Proxy!
    Bull Durham!
Agreed about Jacob's Ladder, just surprised you know it.
So, I totally didn't recognize him.
I think he's been Peter Principled into position and is hanging by a thread.
Which makes him extremely dangerous, cuz unpredictable.
Does our silo have the only vegetation?
    I can't see well enough.
    C'mon season 2!

I read a theory somewhere that says that when a silo "messes up" they get wiped. This falls under the "experiment" category of larger theories but if it's true, it would justify his anxieties. I'm still not convinced that the outside world is truly the problem they make it out to be, so the idea that he is on thin ice is really interesting to consider.

  • @kristinesharp6286

He shows the tape of George to remind her of the conspiracy theory he was onto that the outside was safe. It was the hope that the outside was safe that caused Allison to go out. They needed someone to clean now and then to keep the others under control and cooperating.

I think the hard drive came from the server room at some point probably before benard... maybe from a nosy wife of a predecessor or someone who found out about the server room and took it without anyone knowing about... maybe even before the rebellion... Hard to say considering they were able to access it using the old PCs and still able to track it when connected from the janitorial closet... Not sure how easy that would be to use a modern system to track a device thru dial up, but hey, welcome to post apocalyptic sci fi...😉

I think the silo is supposed to have a facade of leadership (in the form of the Mayor, the Sheriff, and the head of Judicial), to give the people the illusion of choice and some measure of control over their leaders, but Bernard, as the head of I.T., is the person actually in control. However, his control is meant to be *_covert_* , so he only steps in as Mayor *_temporarily_* until a new Mayor can be chosen. The Mayor is *_supposed_* to be a figurehead for the people, while the head of I.T. quietly pulls everyone's strings in the background.
But I think Bernard is tired of acting inconspicuous and only working behind the scenes. I think he's enjoying the perks of being Mayor too, and openly exercising power himself instead of manipulating others. I have a hunch that S2 might have Bernard deciding to stay in the Mayor's role, and that choice doesn't go over well with the leaders of other silos. We might get a chance to see how the "network" of silo bosses reacts when one of their number "goes rogue"... 🤔

Ngl... I already had a hunch the greenery they saw through that mask was fake the second they showed the recorded video of one of the cleaners. It was always the same group of birds and the grass and everything looked kinda artificial to me. But maybe it's just me (I mean about the birds and everything) but it just seemed that they're playing the same tape over and over again.

I don’t know how he can send that guy to the mines ten years. The sheriff asked him about it. Not just anyone. Isn’t she the law? Would that not be a part of an investigation. The sheriff can investigate for 24 hours before handing it over. I did find her I’m the sheriff I can do anything and have access to anything a bit over the top.
