Momentum Testing (Savestateless)

- Me getting the only star in Momentum Testing without the use of savestates.
After playing the two Dar Gos' Glitchies hacks, I wanted to try Iwer's short hack, Momentum Testing, as it was another single-star hack (at least this version is) that's under a minute in length. This one, as you can see, clocks in at only slightly over 20 seconds, but despite that, was shockingly difficult.
The issue I didn't realize when watching this hack (which is what makes it deceptively challenging), is that all the patches of quicksand and safe ground aren't a "guarantee" in reference to their spacing. When I watched others do this star, I assumed everything was spaced in such a way that if you landed the first dive rollout to speedkick, you'd be properly spaced for the rest of the star (well, at least until the first ground pound). But this is definitely not the case. There are times where if you don't pull back at the right time, you can either have too little speed (and land on the quicksand) or too much speed (and land on the other quicksand lol). This is mainly the case when you land from the speedkick at the 4 second mark, and I couldn't really figure out why sometimes I'd overshoot it and sometimes I'd undershoot it. It seems to be how you time the dive (or what speed you enter the dive with) at the 3 second mark, but I couldn't find a way to get it consistently. This is also the case for the end of the star, when doing the dive at the 10 second mark. It looks like you're guaranteed to get the momentum jump after sliding, but you're not; if you have too much speed you'll overshoot the safe ground completely; and, of course, if you have too little speed, you won't have enough speed on the momentum jump and won't make it to the next patch of safe ground.
But oddly enough, the part that gave me the most trouble was the literal first jump of the star: the initial jump dive rollout. It looks so easy, but it took me so bloody long to actually get it even one out of every like five tries. It seems like you gotta jump at just the right time, hold jump for the right amount of time, dive at just the right time, and then hit the last possible part of safe ground while also doing the rollout immediately on what feels like the very next frame. At first, I couldn't get this at all... maybe I'd get it once out of every 25 tries, which was discouraging, but then I learned to kinda roll my thumb from B to A to do the immediate dive rollout. I realized this was mainly the issue, as a lot of times I thought I dived too late, I actually didn't, and was actually just doing the rollout a frame or two late, which results in death.
That's a lot to write about for a 23 second video lol. But despite this star being 23 seconds, it took me like 2.5 hours of practice and 40 minutes of attempts, which is a helluva lot longer than I expected.
Also, the rom hack crashed right after getting the star, which made me very happy it didn't crash at the very end BEFORE I got the star lol. But then I got the star again after with states to test it out, and it crashed again, so I think that's just a thing that happens with this hack, which doesn't really matter as it's a one-star hack.
I like that last frame with the complete blank star name. It’s like:
“Congratulations! You got a star!”

yooo its jett james, i havent seen you in a few centuries so i might say hello, hello

Got this in my recommended after watching Simpleflips' video on this. Hello.
Haha! I was wondering if that would happen! My video is the one shown at the very beginning of Simpleflips video, actually (my channel URL is briefly shown on screen). So so stoked to see him watch my video!!

This level is a great showcase of how awesome momentum in this game is
"Pause buffering is cheating"
For real though, nicely done
TY :)
Yeah, never understood that argument either :P I wish I pause buffered MORE, because I see it as a skill to get better at. and I'm just not that great at it.
You know, the background makes this level look like one of Bob Ross's paintings before he's adds the mountains (i.e. there's only sky, water and clouds).

Hes got better momentum physics that sonic 😂
I know this video is pretty old by now, but this is really impressive. I really want to add tough as nails sections like this in the games I create.
Stuff like this is a BLAST. The problem is, it's so hard that it's difficult to make long stars with this level of precision. To play them, you either have to use savestates (which most ppl don't like doing), be a living Mario God, or spend 400 hours practising. I mean, this tiny 30 second section along took me a few hours, so imagine if the difficulty was the same but it was a ten minute star. You might like this hack I beat a while ago. Tons of tight difficult precise sections: ruclips.net/video/4Hv1iDRlOiE/видео.html&ab_channel=Confluence
yes I tested this way too little lol
Haha, well Katze beat it in 10 minutes, so apparently I'm just really slow at adapting to stuff like this lol

Ironic
It finally appears in my recommendations, do you know any list to learn this cool moves?
Hi! Pretty much the only special movement here is the speedkick. If you search on RUclips for Mario 64 speedkick tutorial, you should find some short videos to teach you how to do it :)

I discovered a glitch where if you ground pound Right as you touch the star For whatever reason you teleport to the ground making you beat the level faster

Can you provide me with a download for this ROM file please?
Sure, I'm not sure if links get removed in RUclips comments, but just go to the site romhacking(dot com) and search for momentum testing in the search bar on the top right. Then click the result and shows up, and then click download.
@@Confluence358 Ahh there's a site for hacked rom files? I had no clue. Thanks for telling me! I'll probably find some other cool stuff on there too. 👌
@@PlatinumEagleStudios Yup! If you've never played a hacked rom before, , though, you might not know that you have to "patch" them with a tool called Flips (cuz for legal reasons, you can only download patches and need to get the actual Mario 64 ROM from somewhere else). You can find guides for this online.

what does touching the red parts do?

Haha, can't see that happening :P The stuff I am capable of doing in Mario 64 is about 1% of what others are capable of doing.

hello, simpleflips fans
I've seen better
Better gameplay or better design :P Both are true, but I love this course; for how simple it is, it's surprisingly challenging. Not in my top 50 stars or anything, but still took a few hours for what's only 20 seconds of gameplay. You should give it a shot if you haven't played it; it's deceivingly difficult, as things don't "match up" as well as you'd think (you WILL die for going either too fast, or too slow; it's not set-up to where you can go at max speed and get through).
Bro think he speed
