"I know your secret vamp! youre a bisexual!!" i love this damn game lmao
*Snake:* "They call him Vamp because he's bisexual."
*Vamp:* Walks on walls, hovers in mid-air, has a Dracula-like east European accent, *has fangs,* *is undead,* 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲𝐬 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖙𝖆𝖘𝖙𝖊 𝖔𝖋 𝖇𝖑𝖔𝖔𝖉.
Almost spilled my coffee when she said it lol, I was not expecting that
"and Brazilians can double jump!"
Just realized Ocelot has the anime mom hairstyle of death. That man is playing with fire...
Welonz went from "they are kinda sweet" to "they should just break up already" pretty fast.
We've managed to avoid drowning.
Good job!
HE SAID THE THING
Snake: "Raiden. This is an escourt mission tied with an underwater level. Practically gaming hell in its purest form. Add into the mix, an unreasonable companion who, by the way, may not have taken a bath or shower in over a decade. I won't lie, I kind of feel for you, kid."
MGS Abridged is timeless.
@Avenger85438 one of the best. I'm gonna bring it up on the last episode.
Exactly why Raiden had to take her for a swim
Man I used to hate Rose and these melodrama filled conversations, but I love them so much now.
Theres another metaphorical and thematic layer to those convos too in hindsight that really makes me enjoy them now, but the first couple of times, I could only laugh like you did.
It all makes sense in the end
Like she does bring up valid points but wrong fking time to bring it up 😂
15:24 - That’s right, Welonz; plug your controller into both ports, and he’ll be powerless against you.
Man was not meant to wield such power
"Raidenwhat's your status?"
"Wet and miserable. And for some reason, I'm wearing this God awful army uniform with the big heavy boots. Let me tell you those boots hold a lot of water. Feel like I'm wearing cinder blocks."
1:47 Welonz experiencing what we call a Kojima Moment
2:45 Literally the meme of how guys live
male living space.
I said "Damn bro, you live like this?" out loud when I heard that XD
"this info is still relevant."
oh, this game has aged masterfully well, that's just the start.
That's what makes Kojima a masterful writer really. Some may find some dialogue a little "laughable" but in terms of overall story, and writing, he's generally years ahead of his time with things that will happen. Everything from Metal Gear to Death Stranding, all have related topics to real life, future things that were yet to happen as well. Creepily so at times.
15:46 After you defeated Raven on the Tank, he refered to Ocelot as "General Ivan".
How dare you laugh at Rose's dramatic confessions! I feel as if my soul has been drained... almost like your empty heart. 😭
What happened in your first attempt with Vamp is that he can pin your Shadow with a knife, preventing you from moving until you shoot the knife or get attacked. The solution is to shoot the lights so they can't cast shadows. 😄
Totally not a vampire tho!
@@kingragnarok7302 From my tenuous understanding the "pin your shadow to the ground" thing is usually connected to tropes regarding ninja folklore in anime and video games. I think it's called "kagenui," or (roughly translated) "shadow stitch." Vamp's throwing knives, and also his ability to run on water, are also sometimes associated with fantastical ninja stuff. It's kind of weird to see a character ninja-coded in some ways, but also vampire-coded in other ways.
That's because that fight was meant for cut character, Chinaman, who was using a martial arts techniques that allowed him to perform feats like standing/running on water, running on walls etc..by controlling his body weight, probably pinning shadow was also his ability. After he was cut, his boss fight and scenes were given to Vamp.
@@wojto16 "Chinaman"? Kojima has no chill.
@@RothSchatten Yeah, he was going to be Asian American who faced a lot of persecution in USA to the point he started to hate the country and joined the whole Dead Cell plot just to take revenge. That's probably why he was calling himself that.
The Rose/Raiden subplot is so utterly jarring and baffling on first playing it but after later revelations and seeing the scenes themselves together are the story it's trying to tell is much more impactful and makes a lot more sense.
Rose is one of the more misunderstood characters in my opinion and I really enjoy what they wanted to do with her character.
I'm just going to put this here ahead of time:
Don't look at the briefing files in MGS3. You will see them as part of the game.
And, if the Master collection is the same as the HD edition, don't say that you "like MGS3" when starting the game. It unlocks things you normally get after finishing the game.
Why not? Wouldn't you want access to that stuff immediately, especially if you're only gonna play once (let's players)? I picked that option just so I could play the harder difficulty on my first playthrough.
@@kylec8015 It's there for people that already played the original PS2 version, not for you to cheat.
The Rose / Raiden conversations are pretty incongruous with the deadly situation going on, but I do think that the conversation about Raiden's room is actually pretty important to understanding his character.
With fuller context these interactions with Rose are actually really interesting.
I never understood it, him just having nothing but a bed and a small desk is not too odd. Aside from being a little weird.. sure. I mean for fucksake the man reads books and is a fanboy of Snake.
I'm more shocked at the fact that if he did have something it wasn't a fullbody cut out of the guy.
@@TheunholybornHe's just a minimalist trying to live his best life away from materialism in his self sufficient green energy RV tiny home lol
@@Theunholyborn LMAO, how many people have you met who only have a bed and a desk in their apartment.
@@DanteRU0312 granted, she said "his room" meaning his bedroom. Not his whole apartment/home. Like I can't say I have TOO much more than that. I have my bed, a nightstand that doubles as "desk" I guess to set things on, a dresser/clothes, some weights to work out with and occasionally I'll plug my Switch in in there. Still like not a whole lot. Especially because you can't exactly mod an apartment if that's what he had too much with like tons of hang ups etc. since you don't own the place. All I'm saying is, that I'd understand if he didn't have a whole lot in his bedroom. Now his entire apartment, if that was just empty, that would be weird.
Yeah Kojima just gets more and more Kojima-y with every new game.
He kinda dials it back with 3. Level of Kojima is in my book:
1: 3
2: 8
3: 5
4: 8
5: 7
Death Stranding: 9
Welonz: I need to know how old Emma is so I can judge Raiden.
Also Welonz: 58:51
Heres a cool little tidbit. The Penza, the sniper medication? If you take it before diving into the water, Emma's breath is held longer.
It's ADHD medicine, so it slows down the heart. What is Emma listening to? Raiden's heart.
Also yeah, Jennifer Hale in the early 2000s to late 90s... Before Bayonetta, before Mass Effect Femshep. Crazy huh?
oh I didn't know about that penza gimmick, amazing
This game has so much spontaneous trauma-dumping.
54:14
So what you're saying is that "war... has changed"
Metal Gear Solid is an INCREDIBLE franchise lmao
41:54
There's the line!
I have the widest smile on my face whenever I hear those lines
Emma sounded so intelligent speaking to raiden about the patriots plans I wish she would talk more! Id love to hear whatever else she has to say about stuff I’m uneducated in.
I feel like just listening to her talk would help me learn faster than if I was going to school lol. Genuinely really pleasant to listen to
When you used the coolant spray on Emma her face tilted a bit... Haven't tried myself, but perhaps she does react to it, but you didn't see because you were facing her back.
Colonel: Raiden, what's your status?
Raiden: Colonel? Just dealing with some deep-seated couple issues, an ambiguous step-siblings relationship and a levitating bisexual vampire, no biggie!
Colonel: Good job. Now head for Strut L!
"You're pretty good!"
I have to rewatch the playthroughs from the beginning, always a joy to seeing reactions from my favorite franchise!
Also, this is more relevant today than when the story was written, that it's eeringly scary.
“A cutscene, 10,seconds of gamplay, a cutscene 10 seconds of gameplay “
*mgs 4 has entered chat*
I have played this game since 2004 a LOT of times, but i never realized how the first playthrough for someone in 2024 can be midly annoying. The controls didn't age well, and the story takes a while to pick itself up, but i still promise its really worth it. My favorite game of all time.
oh no worries, it can be a struggle sometimes but I am still enjoying it a lot overall!
@@Welonz I'm glad! I really enjoy your playthroughs (undertale, outer wilds, death stranding, etc) so i'm just really happy to see your reactions. Thanks for this.
15:24 I spat my water out.
34:30 This game has a weird amount of urinating… (also, like brother, like sister)
I honestly cannot wait for Welonz to witness the…
[MINOR SPOILER FOR MGS4!!!]
…homoerotic sword fighting in MGS4.
we loooove escort mission
Who doesn't love escort mission? It's peak mission design
@@Destiano.Y At least we managed to avoid drowning.
@@NicoTheCinderace"We"? 😅
@@kylec8015 It's a reference to the line Raiden says.
@@NicoTheCinderace My response to Raiden would remain unchanged lol
Famous Welonz Last words
Actually you can't kill the parrot. If you try it's cage just deflects the bullets like Fortune.
52:15 only youtuber lavinia guessed the "exercise" was exactly the event that was happening in the big shell. The only one that i've seen.
Yay! MGS Day. Claymores are fun.
I have a feeling that Rose's dialog meant to keep players from saving too often...
16:46 Hello 極秘 (absolute secrecy)
"Long cutscene, 10 seconds of gameplay" oh boy...
*laughs in MGS4*
Rose, why are you judging Raiden's minimalist room!?
Cons: Escort mission.
Pros: Jammin' beats!
01:40 Meltdown
23:56 Mr. X moment
27:18 One mistake is all it takes
54:24 The meta-plot revealed
We managed to avoid drowning!
heh, this escort mission sucks XD for future reference you can just Tranq Emma at the end and when she goes to sleep, drag her through the lice. a bit evil, but very effective. also, you can crawl directly over claymores without tripping them, it's moving while standing that triggers them, crawling in fine :)
you can also grab her in a chokehold and pull her over the lice like that guard near biometric door, can even spam her with codec messages while chocking if you're feeling particularly sadistic
You can also use the chokehold to move her without Tranq and call her on Codec while holding
@@dalmaskadeadtrash3592 i didn't know that, daymn XDXDXD gonna have to replay it and try that
MGS3 is coming up!! The best game in the series. Can't wait to see your reactions to stuff in that game. This game is probably a bit more relevant topics wise though, like you said. Kojima was ahead of his time in almost all of his games when he wrote them.
What disturbs me most about the Raiden - Rose conversation at 2:30 is that she says it's the FIRST time he raised his hand to her. This implies there were other times. No bueno. And who knew that Kojima foresaw current trends in adult entertainment at 41:25...
Not really, it can be used to say It was very out of character for him
3:52 #Welonz: "...Rose just goes on and on about stuff that's not relevant..." #ME: I agree. Can't a guy just save the world in peace? 😋
You were nice to freeze the bugs, I remember just dragging the damn brat!
2:36 notice that it's "the first time" not "the only time"
"Ivan" is kind of a slur for Russians like Ocelot.
"I know your secret Vamp, you're a bisexual"
Dios Mio! A L̶i̶b̶e̶r̶a̶l̶ Bisexual!
*does the sign of the Cross*
MGS1 Raven calls Ocelot "General Ivan" thought to be derogatory reference to him being Russian.
MGS2 Vamp calls Ocelot "Crazy Ivan" also thought to be derogatory reference to him being Russian.
MGS3 ..... spoilers, we meet someone named Ivan... more spoilers
*Raiden:* "Put your ear against my chest and listen to my heartbeat."
*Emma:* [Piggybacks on Raiden from behind, with her head not even in contact with him in any way]
I’m really starting to hate Rose
Edit- 2:34 ok watched a minute more and now I hate Jack
Kojima's emotional rollercoaster
There's a payoff for all of this, it makes sense eventually. Though they both definitely need therapy
Raiden's pimp hand is a tool of justice
Rose is so toxic 😂😂
50:39 - Don't worry about it, it's a very stupid answer
GW stands for George Washington.
The exchanges between Rose and Jack are... lord. I find very hard to find Rose believable when her bf is close to death every second
it hurts seeing you waste so many bullets x_x
On the topic of information manipulation which Emma talks about, there's somthing insidious about the Patriots codeword, "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" that I didn't learn until years after playing this.
For those that don't know, a unique quirk of Japanese is that it lacks the coresponding sounds for "L" and "R", (in the Japanese dub the codename is replaced with their alphabet) meaning that not only are they secretly controlling the world, with that name, The Patriots are hiding in the very blind spots of language itself.
As for Arsenal, it's name also has a hidden significant, as it symbolizes the evolution of modern warfare.
As Welonz said, conflict is no longer simply about having the best armies and the best equipment, information is now more important than ever. With the rise of the digital age It too can now be weaponised, to both confuse an adversary or alter the narrative of a situation by ensuring what is and isn't seen, or even change facts through presentation to ensure or deter support for something.
What else can you call such a versatile tool, but an Arsenal?
The la li lu le lo thing gets repeated so often but it's not true. It's literally just hiragana in Japanese.
In reference to the name Arsenal Gear, it was taken from the concept of the arsenal ship. The idea behind the arsenal ship is to have a platform entirely dedicated to holding as many weapons as possible (an arsenal) under the direct control of another high tech ship which handles all the logistics and decision making. With this setup you could theoretically have any number of arsenal ships acting as an extension of a single small cruiser armed only with information and communication. The connection to the plot is pretty self explanatory.
Yep we're in 5th gen warfare now. The war of narratives. Google was the elite's control mechanism for the population but now there's so many alternatives that people are waking up en masse
I'm glad that not even Welonz, with her zenlike demeanor, can handle the soap opera crap between Raiden and Rose. Truly one of the videogame couples of all time.
0 views in 4 seconds, Welonz fell off at last. ✊😔
I'm joking. Serie's cool so far.
Sheesh. 2:20
We're starting off strong, eh?
2:34 SHEEEEESH
This is simultaneously one of the best and worst games ever made.
MGS2 development team spent all their veto power on talking Kojima out of making Emma bleed underwater because it'd be peroid. And thus they were powerless to prevent all of the other irksome crap around this part of the game.
is what happened surely probably.
IIRC Raiden raising his hand to Rose is a translation quirk
i just looked up the japanese version and the same line is there too
it's definitely not, it will be referenced again.
MGS2 has much more literal translation compared to 1 so some jokes may be lost and speech may sound unnatural at times but dialogue never changes
Ah yes, quite possibly the worst escort mission ever crested.
It's like 5 rooms long, it ain't even that bad. Silent Hill 4 has you do an escort mission in its second half for literal hours in total time. That is a LOT worse believe me
@@datguyuno98 Ah, just use a candle or two by the end. Plus, there's a trick of running across a room fast and just leaving (companion) behind.
@@RothSchatten True, it's still worse than this short escort mission with Emma though 😂
What's so funny? I don't understand the laughter.
During the Rose scene? Because the melodramatic moment is very over the top and misplaced in relation to the context of the mission Raiden is currently on. Now really isn't the time for that.
For me though, I typically look at Codec calls as being distinct moments, apart from the direct situation taking place. People seem to envision Raiden standing in place for minutes listening to his Codec and having a conversation as the world carries on around him. For me, I view it as moreso that the world is put on pause during Codec conversations and then resumes afterward.
Regarding the cliche dramatic aspect of their conversation, for me it gets put into context with greater awareness of the exact circumstances of this mission and the underlying forces at work. So without the necessary information, it's kinda jarring, and with it it becomes concerning.
If you aren't familiar with this type of storytelling nor sudden tonal shifts, it can definitely be considered polarizingly funny. Raiden is a soldier on this super stressful mission to save someone, constantly being faced with death and deception. If your girlfriend then, out of the blue, tells you she's lonely and commits to sharing a seemingly unrelated and confusing sob story of you being a emotionally empty/unavailable... well, on a first playthrough that can easily be interpreted as hilarious and silly.
@@justjdnl I would think it was placed there for a reason and not just laugh it off. I don't think the tonal shift was that jarring, nor do I think the subject matter was that funny, either.
@@kylec8015 That makes sense, I just didn't think it was that funny.
@@Al-ji4gd I'm pretty sure the laugh was coming from cringe, not from finding it funny. Which it is, even for MGS standards.
Rose is what happens when one actress thinks she has been cast in a romance drama while everyone else is in a war movie.
This kind of thing is what happens when your lead creative designer (Kojima) has too much creative control.
Calm down lol
Rose and Jack: the worst couple in video games history.
MGS2 is a sort of tax you pay before you can enjoy MGS3
^It's still better than MGS4
@@TarnishedGaming85^MGS4 has no underwater escort mission so it wins by default. I don't make the rules.
2 & 4 are both awesome. People seem to overstate how good 3 is.
@@TheEvdiggity You right. 3's ending is peak though.
MGS3 might be the best game made on PS2 but MGS2 is the best piece of modern media ever created surpassing MGS3 completely.
Emma is 16 years old, I think. And this is why I won't show Japanese media to anyone 😢
She is an adult and literally has a job...
@@Nexdex I haven't checked wiki in a while, but I remember reading about it. No, I don't know why anyone would allow a teenager to take part in such a project 🤷♂️.
