    If you maintain the speed consciously you gain a lot in the chest and shoulder muscles. As a fighter it was very beneficial to make my hands heavy in terms of impact.

    Thank you for great advice. You shared a lot of great information and it all makes sense🙋🏾‍♀️ With that said I will not use wrist weights while I’m walking.

    My wife has been walking with 10 lb dumbbells in each hand ? She wants to transition to 10 lb each wrist weights for walking. Is that a good idea ? To me it seems like way too much stress on the wrist joint.... Please let me know your opinion....Thank you

    Thank you very much for your videos. I was wondering re the wrist weights and low impact aerobics as I have been holding dumbells in each hand doing aerobics videos at home so as to get some upper body workout while exercising. I feel it, but it has not affected my workout other than it being a bit harder on my arms and shoulders (but I am still moving my arms as much as when I don't use them), and I don't feel at risk of falling doing it. I started very light (500gms) and am only at 1kg now. From your video, it looks like the concern is more to do with strap on wrist weights. I do wear a weighted vest anyway for the workout. Should I cut the hand held dumbells for my aerobics routines? Thanks.

    That's 1 lb.? Looks like 2.5 lb. Anyway. First one should build up to say 3 miles at a fast pace w/out weights. Then move to a hilly course or do repeats on a hill if possible. Also, before introducing the weights get a pre-hab program going for hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders. Now when introducing the weight one should start very light. Most people go too heavy too soon. 1/4 to 1/2 lbs. And use db's or something held in the hand. I started w/ railroad spikes. Now it's up to the trainee to use the weight training principle of progression, but at a much slower pace. You are doing 1000's of repetitions w/ a load that's at the end of a limb consequently the leveraged is more extreme and this increases the chance of injury. Build up to the pace you did w/out the extra weight and stay at that weight for a month or two. Allow your body to adapt to it before you increase it, increase w/ a small amount, and stay at the new weight until you are able to cover your course at the non-weight pace. You also may want to experiment w/ alternating weighted and non-weighted days. If you're interested in more ideas checkout Dr. Leonard Schwartz's book: 'Heavy Hands'. One of the best exercise system/programs out there.

    Thanks so much for these thoughtful, safety conscious videos, Margaret. Have you already covered best styles of footgear for walking? I'm realizing that my Nikes have quite soft insoles, which is comfy -- but am I getting enough impact to help my bones when I walk in them?

    What's the difference between wrist weights and nordic walking poles?

    • @oldnatty61
      @oldnatty61 Год назад

      The ability to increase the weight w/ db's. The poles you can get some resistance pushing into the ground. Also the poles can offer stability if you need that. There are adjustable weighted gloves so one could combine both and get the benefits of both. Also, checkout the Nordictrack X-country ski machine. I'm talking about the original that the company started w/. One of the best machines a per can have at home. Amazingly simple smooth design. They last forever, and there's nothing to go wrong. I got mine off craig's list for $25, and have been using it for years daily w/out any maintenance. I'm sad to see them go high tech and now only make the one model.
