      Video Games being the reason for Gamers to learn another language is WAY more common than you think it is... especcially for non-english native speakers...

      I did play Black 2 before release in the states, but I don’t know Japanese. I learned what most of the moves were, with the animations/typing/pp, and kinda made up the story as I went along. The only problem was the Plasma ship, since you needed passwords to get to Colress, but at that point people had already posted guides. Other than that, if you understand Pokémon, most of the games are straight forward enough to play blind

Moreover you can do it before the third gym and before the rocket hideout, you can use the psychic TM as soon as you get the mr.mime and, since it's a traded pokemon, it levels up faster! Psychic seems a good move for the whole run (with STAB too...)

      But how do you select it to use it? You can't use Cut or Surf in the overworld in Gen 1 without going into the menu; there isn't a prompt like in Gen 2 that allows you to just press A. Likewise, you'd have to cycle down through your movesets to choose the move you want to replace. I guess I took the challenge more seriously lol

    Im adding yet another comment bc comments are good for the youtube algorithm and I just reached the Weeb Rant(tm) and
    I took 4yrs of mandarin in high school and loved every minute of it I swear. My knowledge is now lost to time but honestly, yeah, lots of characters, hard pronounciations for a native english speaker. I have or had a chinese newspaper at some point and I wanted to read chinese books and learn the language fluently but I have poor motivation skills if its not related to nerd shit like, for example, pokemon and d&d

      I wish my mom had taught me Japanese growing up. I'm at the point where I can read most characters comfortably enough, but it's still much more effort than it takes me to read English.
      And text like Pokemon without an kanji character actively causes me pain.

    • @henrymars6626
      @henrymars6626 3 года назад

      @@ImportedCheese Yeah big same with me and Spanish. Wish I learned it growing up from mi abuela, but whats hard about it for me is the whole "every word has a gender" thing.
      In Mandarin, its all in the character. She/he/it (idk if there is technically nonbinary pronouns in Chinese) is all represented by "tā" and only the character changes (他,她). And if you wanna plural it? Just put "men" after it (他们).
      Spanish? Well you have your choice of el, ella, nosotros, and uh....other things that I dont remember. And you have to use some words based on what YOUR gender is. And I'm nonbinary so like....tf do I do lmao. Let alone how other people would address me assuming they respect my pronouns.

    • @Komatik_
      @Komatik_ 2 года назад

      @@ImportedCheese It's probably mostly due to a lack of practice. When we read eg. English, our brains try to spot the shapes of words, and no competent Japanese reader is used to looking for the shapes of kana sequences: They're trained to spot kanji. There's also some evidence that the density of the script we read affects our field of focus a bit - denser script, narrower field of view and the reverse. Mixed script is reasonably dense, while kana only script is much looser, so that also adds to the initial discomfort.
      Both are effects you'd expect to go away by mass exposure, and we don't exactly see people claiming that reading most other languages is torture. Korean seems to work fine (though Korean written in hangul is often denser than mixed Japanese), as do several other languages that are similar to Japanese in some ways but use a Latin or Cyrillic alphabet.
