  • On All Soul´s Day, Christians remember those who have passed away. Usually in an Evening Mass, the names of those passed away (in the last year) are recited to remember them, and to recommend them to our eternal Father.
    During my time in Xanten´s St.Viktor´s Basilica, I learned a special custum of ringing : the slow ringing (or one-sided ringing).
    In the Basilica, it is done for moments of mourning, at least once a year during the Mass on All Soul´s Day, or also at the death and funeral of the priests or people that had a special connection to this church.
    The bell is swung slow, no regular strikes are heared - it´s a very special sound - since 2014, I have been ringing like this in some other places on All Soul´s Day, and I would do this on funerals/death announcements, if it´s requested/accepted.
    This year, I rang the memorial at St.Cosmas & Damian Coptic Orthodox Church, as no Catholic Church I serve had an Evening Mass, where I could do it. Also, this is the first time that I had the chance to record it inside the tower, so it´s the first time you can see me doing it.
    The bells of St. Cosmas and Damian Church were cast in 1952 by Bochumer Verein, a steel factory that also cast bells between 1853 and 1970, this set (5 bells) were cast for Katholikentag 1952 in Berlin (Katholikentag is a regular gathering of German Catholics, which happens at different places each time).
