This was the race that I really remember. My dad suffered a mild stroke and was hospitalized on the day of this race. He wasn't able to record the race and was able to watch most of the race while he was in his hospital room while he recovered. The nurses were so nice to him to let him watch this race. I'll never forget that day, August 24, 1996.
I enjoyed watching this race. I remember attending this race but watching it on the old ESPN reruns and the coverage back then was so much better without all that crap flashing across the screen.
At the time I didn't love that Rusty changed from the just black and gold to that more colorful paint scheme but in retrospect that is a great simple and simple look.
I've be3n looking for the night race where Rusty kept short pitting due to tire wear from the back to the front several times. Listening to the radio camping at the river I was biting the door handles off the truck
