  • Social activist-feminist, Ngurang Reena has been fighting against racism and discrimination faced by the minorities in India, mostly towards the people of the North-Eastern region.
"People aren't born with racist ideas or attitudes," says Reena, onstage at TEDxXIE 2019. "Racism is something that is learned or acquired." In her eye-opening talk, Reena reveals the unspoken evidence of how racism has been killing youths across India- and offers resolutions on how it can be dealt with.
Ngurang Reena is a former Assistant Professor of Miranda House, Delhi University. She is currently perusing her PhD research from Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. Recently she was a Joint-Sec candidate for JNUSU election 2018. She is a strong social activist-feminist from Arunachal Pradesh and constantly fights for rights in her state. She together with her sister, is the founder of Ngurang Learning Institute, an organisation working towards empowerment of tribal women in Arunachal Pradesh. She is also into spoken word poetry and often uses poetry as a tool for her activism, to raise awareness about the issues in her society and of the country. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Indias racism is a huge problem. Muslims and Kashmiris are victims of abuse and torture.

As a northeastern sister to all my brothers and sisters from north east, please make friends outside of your circle too. I met my best friends from Delhi, kerela and UP from work place and apartment building. Greet that uncle/bhaiya/aunty who's shop you frequent everyday, talk to them. Be respectful and mindful of their culture and they will respect you too. I say this because we don't do this at all, and often times we are defenseless and have no one on our side. Racism is unfortunately everywhere. We are victims as well as the perpetrators and that is the sad truth.

Racism in South India is no different from North India. A young boy from Shilong came to work in Coimbatore for his living. He was a hairdresser in Naturals. He seemed very stressed and silent so my friend and I decided to talk to him since we knew he has come from far away and has no one to talk to(we had talked to other NE hairdressers for the same reason, every NEhairdresser we have talked to had similar issues but this one was extreme). Initially, he wasn't answering much but later he trusted us and told us everything that he has faced until now. An old lady who cleans the floor calls him mental. He was beaten up by his manager. He only eats once a day and he didn't get his pay for the past few months. After all this conversation the old lady came from another room and told me to stay away from him because he is mental and not to believe anything he said.

I don’t remember in what video I saw this, but I do remember seeing footage of an Indian man who said something to the effect of “the person with the strongest lawyer is right” with regard to the law.
Justice is supposed to be blind, but I think this man with his misguided understanding of legality crystallized what is in practice true everywhere; the person with greater wealth has access to the better lawyers, who are capable of shaping an outcome that flies in the face of what is truly just.
It’s anguishing to think that a matter of pretension is the only thing preventing everyone from acknowledging how human law in any given place operates on the principles of might being right!

Yes. However we all have tribal ancestors. The evolutionary instinct that causes most humans to fear snakes which Carl Yung called “ the collective unconscious “is also at play in causing fear of other races or tribes. This is more prominent in males. It is eventually softened by empathy but still hides beneath the skin, even in the so called civilised. Hence the germ of racism is in all of us. I feel fortunate in that I am able to empathise, usually.

How should we take this further? When we are not going to discriminate anybody with his race? I never did which are this elements present in society? When this will be stopped further? And will get an equal representation in every aspect of India.

@@rupeshjadhav4713 I can't say anything about country level but surely you can talk with your friends regarding this issue like I do and this really helps as once they know how the other person feels they don't repeat this behaviour at least in my case.

Specifically same I do but it can bring change? Or we need to educate every dealer of property and Job employer. There is no equitable representation for them in the country. Like I can exemplify When we choose Mrs India for Mrs World they get crowned one by one statewise and other states get three credits.
