  • Just picked up this ISUZU NPR Medium Duty Truck. I've been tinkering with the idea of making an overland/expedition camper vehicle of sorts. This will be a fun platform to do it on. It is a 4x2 with Dualies in the back. So will need to work on a 4x4 conversion and as well put some singles on it.

well done, great little truck! If this is your 1st commercial truck, you have a steep learning curve ahead of you, that's the fun part!

@@iAmMarchal I don't own but have done a ton of research and mostly familiar with the Mitsubishi FG140 4x4. But the Isuzu, Mitsubishi and GMC are very similar. The first thing I would say is research your axle swap in depth, mostly concerning the steering angles. These dictate your turning radius (which right now is amazing, like a forklift). If you were in a single cab 2x4, your radius is approx. 23', same truck in 4x4 will be approx. 44'. The diesel 3.0L was supposed to get 30 MPG and has a wee bit more torque but nowhere near the HP. But the real difference is where in the RPM range the torque peaks. Torque is king for control and slow speeds, HP rules the highway and passing. Other than that, there is one other fellow on YT that did exactly what you are abotu to do, poke around and see if you can find him. I think it was a Wounded Warriors project build.

@@brotherlove100 thanks. Solid info! I was very impressed by the turning radius. Would hate to lose that. I’ll keep that in mind as I work on axles. So far sounds like F550 axles or the Dyna Pro Rock 80’s will work. Will see how it goes.

@@iAmMarchal yup, that axle will get you to 52 deg. It is over kill but it will work very well. I'll be eager to watch the truck develop into your adventuremobile!

Were you able to put a 4x4 conversion on it yet in 2024?

Loaded up she will get 4-6 mpg which still isn’t horrendous with gas being cheaper then diesel. My diesel pusher with an 8.3 Cummins in it gets 8 mpg loaded or unloaded towing or not.

Agreed Poon. I got average 10mpg on the hwy the 2k miles home. And that was empty. I like that about diesels. Same mpg no matter what.

I bet he'll get 8 no matter what. 75mph is fast for these trucks. 65 would've been much more efficient....but slower so that's the tradeoff
