I surfed for years here in Hawaii and always found my duck dives inefficient compared to everyone else. Didn't realize how important it was to push down on the back of the board to get completely UNDER the whitewater. Not ashamed to say that you taught me something I should have known long ago!!!!!
A good duck dive can feel so rewarding, like a successful maneuver, especially when you manage to join that downward and seaward energy under the wave.
Great video, the best Ive seen on this topic. I could never get the hang of duck diving, always get beaten up and smacked around by waves on the way out. No fun at all to be honest. Sometimes its very difficult to know what to do when a big wave is coming towards you. I usually just ditch the board and swim under the wave like Im swimming to save my life. I have great respect for anyone who can surf, its a very difficult sport to master.
@@barefoot_surf please make a video about what to do if you get caught right in the impact zone. I always panic and become breathless, that's before having to hold my breath under water. Usually I just ditch my board and try to swim under but get dragged back because of the leash. I'm not having fun in the waves because of this. Currently in Bali and afraid to go out except on very mellow days.

When I’m trying to find a duck dive video this awesome video from the best surf channel comes up! Thanks!
This was very helpful! I just started my youtube channel about my journey from a beginner to an intermediate level surfer and I'm trying to learn how to duck dive. Thanks for the great tips :)
I've been surfing for about a month in November and I don't know DocDive, but I want to surf again after watching this video. Thank you for a good video.
Goggles are extremely dangerous to a surfer because if the board hits you in the face your goggles can be lodged right into you eyeballs and if your wearing a scuba mask the mask will be ripped away from your face.
Havnav i’d recommend a board from wave bandit or catch surf with about at least 50 liters of volume and at the bear minimum of 7 foot anything less will be harder to pop up and stay afloat and balance. also stay away from fiberglass boards until you’ve went atleast 10 tiems
Can anyone explain what is bring your body to surfboard instead of bringing the surfboard to your body? What’s the difference in the motion and feeling?
is it possible on a foam topped board? i thi k it was 8 or possibly 7 feet long and i have serious issues with just getting battered back time and time again
It is also fair to say that grabbing the board beneath pectoral does NOT always work given the shape of the board! Nothing is written in stone in surfing, there are certain Principles which are FEW but methods there are a million and more, do not get cut up on methods but learn principles and then finding methods is easy.
Do surfers open their eyes underwater? or not? I would imagine it would be painful with it being salty. What if there is a second wave crashing just as you finish your duck dive?
I can’t get my tail under water I don’t know if my board is to big for me or I’m doing something wrong im 4’10 90 pounds my board is like 6’1 34L is that why?
Depends on your weight, then strength. I'm 67kg, and can press 40L in head high...but 30L is ideal for serious waves. Length has little effect, although shorter is a little easier. If you are 80Kg/180lb you should be fine in medium waves. Otherwise, put some angle on the board and clam shell it down at the start.
When I duck dive I was told to push with my foot/knee as if digging in a spade - this gives you a big chunk of water between you and your board, I use it to "anchor" the board and pull myself towards it.
Very interesting vid. 👍 I would like to ask you a side question: I am doing Kitesurf within waves and in case of big shore break with a strictly on shore wind, it is very tough to move out of the beach, so the more reliable technique is body drag: I am laying flat on the water with the board between hands and elbows and the wind pulls me upwind, but with a limited angle (as 20/30 deg to the sea) Due to so there are very much to travel sideways, and I cross plenty of big waves breaking hard on me, pushing me back to the beach, returning my board or myself…! 😵💫 People told me that the best technique would be to adopt the duck dive technique from the surf but no one was able to explain me the best practices for my particular case🥺 During the duck dive I will still have one arm up connected to the bar and maintaining the kite high and possibly pulling (at least not falling). My board will come at the duck dive entry point with an edging angle in opposition to the kite and with a 60/70 degree traveling direction to the wave Do you thing we must keep those angles when duck diving or try to do as surfer (board flat and facing the wave), when pushing on the noze to dive it?🤓 😎 Thank you for your help! 🤗
No way you can duck dive a board while kitesurfing, you just have to time crossing the waves right on your board, onshore wind with a big break is not ideal conditions you need cross wind to get out the back
Left foot forward means that you are regular footed I beleive. Same thing for the other side but with right foot forward If you still don’t know try purposely fall forward and then save yourself with your foot. Hope that makes sense and helps
i recommend a board with a length of anywhere between 5’7 and 6’4 with a width of around 18¾″-19¼″. I am 5’4 (12 years old don’t judge me) and i ride a 6’3 short board and it is super smooth
me: does duck diving every day in pool to get better me: thinks it looks awesome an flawless also me: watches this video and realizes how stupid i am :l
I was at blacks today just getting tumbled I was frustrated as fuck cause there was hella people able to duck dive the fuck out of everything and I was just not able
These videos are so clear, simple and easy to follow but I find that when I get in the water everything just goes out of the window and I don't get things like duck-diving right, anyone else find that?
I think the feeling of propulsion through the wave comes from both the sinking and rising of the board, and the rising and falling of the wave. The diagram of the flow of water in the wave seems wrong because water doesn't go up at the back of the wave, water falls at the back of the wave and rises at face. During submersion the board is angled down, the board is sinking in the water and the water in the wave is rising. As long as there is flow relative to the board and the nose is lower than the tail, the flow of the water over the board will push the board forwards. During surfacing the board is rising and the wave is falling, the nose is now higher than the tail and the flow pushes the board forwards. Thanks for the vid!
This depends entirely on where your Surfing. Small day on a reef break with crystal clear water, yep fairly easy to open your eyes. However on a larger day at a Beach Break where the sands all churned up, nowhere near as pleasant ahah!

Yessss, you best bet imma not gonna try to outrun the wall of water, imma surf that sheeet
Actually you should just go over the tsunami because it goes underwater

Well produced tutorial. Thanks
I just realized ive never seen a surfer wearing goggles......rip eyeballs
You don’t need them you just close your eyes underwater cause like what do you plan at looking at
Goggles are extremely dangerous to a surfer because if the board hits you in the face your goggles can be lodged right into you eyeballs and if your wearing a scuba mask the mask will be ripped away from your face.

thanks however about ducking at about 6 feet ... i need to within 3 feet and does it vary depending on where you are and how big waves are ? thanks
Lucia Seacreature yes
The speed of the wave/white water determines when you should duck dive. Comes with practice.
How do you push your body towords the surf board without pushing the the surf board towards your body
Do surfers open their eyes underwater? or not? I would imagine it would be painful with it being salty. What if there is a second wave crashing just as you finish your duck dive?
Personal preference! It also depends where in the world you are surfing too, and the conditions of the ocean.
I can look under water without gollgels but I don't know if I'll be ok when I move under water without gollgels
Goggles*
I think you will be able to do so then as I open my eyes under water when I duck dive.
Thank you ! This helps a ton
Keeping ur eyes open isn’t an option at the Jersey shore

Keeping your eyes open in any ocean isn’t an option 😂

For long, beginner foam boards, they don’t sink as well, can I just ditch the board? Or what method is the best?
NEVER ditch, turtle
I can’t get my tail under water I don’t know if my board is to big for me or I’m doing something wrong im 4’10 90 pounds my board is like 6’1 34L

Maybe lol
If you are following the techniques in the video and you still cannot sink your tail, it sounds like your board is too big for you to duck dive.

Your board isn’t too big if it’s only 6 foot 1 cos I duck dive my 6 foot 2 board, u might just be too lite

Can u still duck dive with a foamy
Maybe a very small foamy! Never any that we have tried though..
any tips on how to bring my body to my board (and not vice versa)?
just pull your body towards your board when its deep under the wave
When I duck dive I was told to push with my foot/knee as if digging in a spade - this gives you a big chunk of water between you and your board, I use it to "anchor" the board and pull myself towards it.
I push scoop with my other leg , kinda propels me that little half meter forward . Am I just imagining or anyone else does that ?
