    another important point that isn't explicitly mentioned but that I think is a good thing to think about is how your left foot helps create leverage with the water to get yourself deeper. kicking up through the water with your left foot actually helps push you down further

    Wow after years of surfing I never noticed that sinking the tail was so important! Great Video.

    Thank you, great content as always. I actually first saw this a few months back - this is the only tutorial I have come across which goes into why it's important to get and keep the tail down, which helped me tremendously. I'm 60kg and alternate between 2 boards which are both 39L. Not being able to confidently duck dive held me back from paddling further out for a long time (my local beach break is nicknamed "the wild West", and I'm not the type to venture out and just hope for the best...). This video helped me get into duck diving properly and over the months I have become more confident as I'm now able to navigate my way out whilst making sure I stay on my board (most of the time, anyway!).

    Yup your left leg kick is very efficient, then when the wave hits it- you must get very deep. I can reliably get under reasonably solid waves, but might see if I can get the left leg deeper before I kick- it’s bound to help. Thx

    Which board would be easiest to duckdive? A short , wide, thick board or a longer narrower board?Both with identical volume

    • @shannonainsliesurf
      @shannonainsliesurf 7 месяцев назад

      That’s a good question!! I’d say the narrower board as you could push the rails down and scoop the board to go deeper. But maybe I should test the difference between the 2 🙌

    I’m surfing a 6’4 46 liters board, and I’m finding it hard to duck dive it.
    Any tips for mid length boards?

    • @shannonainsliesurf
      @shannonainsliesurf Год назад +5

      Yes there are ways to duckdive a board with more volume. I can make a tutorial on that too soon I hope. But basically you’ll need to scoop the board. So don’t push the board down, push one rail a little bit in and then the next rail. It won’t go very deep but it still helps!

    • @juliotorres3618
      @juliotorres3618 Год назад +3

      Unless you are very short or light, you should still be able to duck dive it. As you grab the rails to push the board down, make sure to shift your weight to the front of the board. As you push down on the board with your hands, put your strong leg on the back of the board, and then start raising your other leg out of the water. This allows you to apply Newton's equal-but-opposite-reaction principle in order to more easily push your board down with your strong leg. As you are raising your off leg out of the water, you need to straighten out your strong leg, which allows you to sink the back of your board. Practice in water with little to no waves until you get the confidence of doing it in bigger waves. As you know, in surfing, a little confidence goes a long way!

    Hey I'm having trouble pushing the board down with my arms, could it be because of my board or my body?

    • @shannonainsliesurf
      @shannonainsliesurf Год назад

      Hi Max. It could be your technique or it could be that the board has a lot of volume. How much do you weigh and how many liters does your board have?

    Hi Shannon: I’m 56 kg. Do you think than i can sink a 45 l softboard?

    • @shannonainsliesurf
      @shannonainsliesurf 2 месяца назад

      Hey. It could be difficult but it is possible! You might not be able duckdive deep and you also might have to scoop the board from the one rail as you’re duckdiving if that makes sense?

    What I want to know is if I'm going to get hit by a big wave should I let my board go or hold onto it? Also can duck diving only work with smaller waves?

    • @shannonainsliesurf
      @shannonainsliesurf Год назад +1

      You should not let go of your board if there are people behind you. If it’s a big wave and no one behind you then it’s fine. There is always that chance of your leash snapping too though. So keep practicing those duck dives 🙌😊

      @@shannonainsliesurf thanks, this is not easy, it takes a lot of practice. Video is very helpful. I was caught by two huge waves in Bali while paddling out. I thought I was going to die. I held onto my board because I thought it would help bring me to the surface. But I've also found that letting go of the board I can more easily swim under the wave. This is very important for survival!

  • @MyMmmd
    @MyMmmd Год назад +1

    I think the easiest way when learning is to just try and sink the whole board at once. Don't worry about getting the nose down first and then getting it up first at the end. If you can just sink the board straight down you'll do a decent job of getting under the wave. Once you've mastered this you can work on the scoop. The scoop is generally much more subtle than you think it is when you're starting out. The important thing at the start is just sinking the board as much as you can-get your body as far away from the board as you can and it'll sink.

    • @shannonainsliesurf
      @shannonainsliesurf Год назад

      Thanks for your feedback. It is possible to do it that way but it’s not the best and not the easiest 😅

    • @MyMmmd
      @MyMmmd Год назад +2

      The end result is the same it's just a good way of learning it. As you rightly point out not sinking the tail is a really common mistake and this method of learning really helps with that.
