Dark Angels Lazarus: Phase One

- This time around we're going sci-fi and taking a look at the early stages of Captain Lazarus.
Originally I wanted this to be a complete process video but he offers a lot of topics I'd like to pull to the side and make a couple focused videos on. A separate more detailed video on painting his face for example. In this first video I'm finishing the base, the armor, and getting the other areas established. Let's rock!

"Oh look, father Christmas!"
-my wife, as I proudly showed her my first DA captain model
It's a real privilege to not only watch how a master works but also the THOUGHT process. Thanks for the encouragement, Sam!
Silhouetting against a white background is such a simple, great idea to get acquainted with the vibe of a mini.
This is really valuable.
Having two locked off frames showing brush work and paint loading is so useful for someone like me wanting to improve. Monkey see, monkey do.
Thanks, Greg! I believe in you!
I never would have considered mixing a blue-green with a yellow-green but of course that makes a perfect mid green. Simple and brilliant.
Pretty awesome mate! You make it look so effortless!
You also hit the sweet spot with the music volume!
Man I need to learn how to wet blend. Smooth af as always sir samsonite
Thanks, Bra! Check out my video, intro to wetbelnding and give it a shot!
You are a King Sam!!👍🤘
Thank you, John!
As a Blood Angels player, the danger of making your models overly festive while trying to work in some contrast is one I can relate to massively.
Haha, right! Such a fine line to walk.
Honestly Bro, how you make it look this effortless, is beyond me. I'm painting a bit over 1 year now, but I think wet blending would stress me tf out.
This has been a very important video for my painting, learned so much! Thank you
Never stop sam, never stop
Your Dark Angels colour theme is dope.
It's been a long one. But worth watching every minute.
Thanks for watching!
You are a true master
I do what I can :)
Sam, you’re a magician both with colour, and with brush control, dude. You have THE pointiest broom. Ever. But so much control on that behemoth broom. Your colour is next level. Mesmerising long format. Thanks ☺️
Haha, thank you, Sam! I'm honored! More to come 😎
don't worry Sam mate, skulls in real life are very textured! glorious work
Now to listen to some Steely Dan
Awrooo, so smooooth 😎
Inspirational! Love all your videos and style. Cool to see a 40K model
Top notch content here. Just stumbled upon your channel this weekend and I'm glad I did!
This was a fantastic paint vid! Thanks you've made me want to start a small d.angels combat patrol! Can't wait for the next vids. Any chance in the description txt about the vids you could add the paints you used? I kept writing them down as you described them so I can purchase them but got confused a couple of times regarding blue/green and also the make of paint. Fab channel that I only just found and just watched your edge highlight vid... wow. P.S. love that you also show the wet pallet and mixing.
Those videos are incredibly cool! Thanks
Downright legendary
Mate, that is the best dark angel paint job I've ever seen, to maintain that dark broody tone that you mentioned, while bringing out that level of contrast and brightness is genuinely amazing. So many I've seen are no doubt still amazing work, but they lose that dark angels mood and end up a little salamander. Not yours... Awesome and inspirational job sir 🤘
Seems I need to spend a LOT of time practicing non metallic metal to achieve that sort of look.
Cheers
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! I try to emphasize the dark part of the dark angels. Cheers!
Very impressive job big man, and I dont mean about the paintjob...We all know thats Impressive at all times...The length of the video and information packed in it...Really good job
Thanks, Gabalth! More to come in this series :)
Superb work as always!
Cheers Sam.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
He’s holly jolly, but in minor key hah! Looks awesome dude!
Haha, A modern Santa for these trying times.
Master Lazarus. Not Sgt. Got to rep my Chapter, you know. Another very cool video.
How do you get that perfectly diluted paint for every job just sitting there in a blob. And why do i need 3 basecoat layers when you seem to only need 1 to make it look perfectly smooth. Youre a magician dude
Haha, thanks man! It's hard to diagnose someone's painting problems without seeing their work but the trick is a small, controllable amount of paint. Check out my video, an exercise in blending, I think it might help.
More rhymes, more grime, more times Sam. You're a poet and you don't even know you were rhyming those words. c/o B99
Awesome man, and names with 2 "z" are the best...
The ending was dope, right up until you put the glasses on lopsided. Badass paint work as always.
Is there a possibility to make the painting parts a bit more fluid. The like 15 frames/ps during the painting marts almost make me seasick.
I love your tutorials but those 15FPS are giving me a hard time lol.
When I saw the dark sea blue and the lime green on the palette I was "wtf?". After the ink wash I was "Ooooohh".
Brushes used, color list chopchop
little confused on which brand of paint you mostly use.. guncore brown etc
Fantastic video, really enjoyed this, have you ever discussed some of the brushes you use? or opinions of products? id be interested in knowing.
Thanks Remy! I have a set of brushes available through monument hobbies that is a combination of synthetic and natural bristles. I've been using those for most of my work over the last 3 years. You can find a link in my description and enter the code samson for a slight discount.
@@SamLenzArtwork Thank you for getting back to me, I will check them out, Iv been using Windsor and Newton brushes and just not finding them that satisfying to work with.
Excellent job! Do you use any retarder with the paints? Mine dry out so fast once they hit the model….
Not usually, I seem to live in the perfect level of humidity up in Wisconsin. Nothing wrong with using some additional liquids though!
My biggest question is: How do you keep your brush so pointy? No matter which brand of synthetic brushes I look at, the tip is never as good and frizzes up almost immediately once I start painting...
Are the paint thinned down?
do you think i'll ever be able to accomplish blends like you sam? i try n try but im not finding good progress...*sigh...* lol
very black metal
Hello, I'm new to the hobby and it is very helpfull, thanks a lot :) May I ask, did you built the base yourslef ? If yes how ?
Thanks, Thomas! The base is from a different model, the captain from Indomitus. I also glued down some dried dirt and a skull from the citadel box o skulls.
I can't handle the change of music for the tree intro I'm so confused!
As someone who hasn't painted a mini since the early 90's, would you say that Vallejo is a better paint to procure over GW were I to give it another shot?
As another hobby returner, I'd say go for Vallejo. It's usually a little cheaper, and the current GW pots are really poorly designed - they don't get a good seal so half your paint ends up dried out inside the lid.
@@jmalkvideos The difference in price isn't really any more concerning than the cost of plastic minis. I was more interested in the pigment quality/coverage.
@@AneurysmHooks ah, cool, the colours I’ve used from them have been excellent!
Are the paints straight out of the dropper? Looks like Sam just takes a little speck of paint at a time, instead of of GW thin and make a nice pointy tip. I like his process.
probably because he's using a wet palette, which GW official vids etc don't. Has a thinning effect.
I'm using a large brush so it holds a good amount of moisture in the bristles, then taking a small amount of paint, so the dilution is happening right on the model. Check out my video, an exercise in blending. I think that will help in understanding what the heck is happeing.
Awesome video . What paint brushes are you using? they look like they are synthetic ?
Thanks, Leigh! I have a link in ny description tot he brushes I use. Its a pack of synthetic and natural hair brushes, use the code samson at checkout for a slight discount.
@@SamLenzArtwork Hey , for some reason i cant see the link in the description?
Wow this technique and paint job is amazi g that's my favourit do you using "retrder medium" or anything else or only normal colors from th bottle
Guess from germany
Thanks, Brian! I keep things simple. Occasionally I still bust out the retardent.
@@SamLenzArtwork ok thank you very much i come to your paitrons i want learn how to wet blend like you :D this is my favourit technique :D and i hope i master this :D
Do you mix in anything into your paints before putting them on your palette? When I put blobs of paint down they're unworkable without water. I guess you have water in your brush, but your paints just look different.
@@LayTheeDown I know he uses a wet pallette, I can see that, but still, my paints don't get watered enough through the paper.
@@LayTheeDown I use the Army painter wet palette. I used to use a home made one before, with baking paper, and it behaved in a very similar way. I also use a tattoo ink mixer to shake my paints well, so everything should be fine. Still, my paints never seem to behave like Sam's. They're rather thick and I need to keep adding water to them on the palette.
STEELY DAN!?!
For the base coat you don't use water?
A bit of moisture in a large brush will give me a smooth coat.
@@SamLenzArtwork Thank you very much. You do an incredible job.
Each video of yours is a Masterclass.
Are you using a synthetic brush for the first part?
Yes, I prefer larger brushes to be synthetic.
@@SamLenzArtwork any brands or types you recommend?
Never mind, I figure it's the pro brush 6 and 4
SamLenz hates Christmas. Does he even have Jesus in his heart?

Haha, happy yulesmass!

Correction: he is only the Captain/Grand Master of the 5th Company. The Chapter Master, or Supreme Grand Master, is actually Azrael, who also leads the Inner Circle and, by pure dent of being the Dark Angels’ Chapter Master, the rest of the Unforgiven, a collection of successors to the original 1st Legion including the Angels of Vengeance, the Blades of the Covenant and the modern day Dark Angels Chapter themselves. As such, he leads the rest of the Unforgiven on crusades to hunt down the Fallen.
Lazarus is a master (captain) not a Supreme grand Master
Its dark sea green? You keep saying that its dark sea blue, but that dont look right
He also called dark sea green
Yes, it is. I was totally confused as that color isn't actually blue to me. But you're right.
Chapters? I see no chapters....
