I remember the exact same thing that you say when I was working on vibrato.
My teacher told me: it is the only thing that doesn't come from a technical point of view, it comes from here. And he pointed to my chest. Those moments you must treasure and never forget

Magnificent playing by Kriesler, by any standards.

i'm not a big fan of vibrato, especially in baroque music. however i like very much the way kreisler uses it in this piece. what i don't actually like in kreisler's playing are all those audible shiftings. i'd like to know your opinion about this latter issue. thanks for the very interesting insight.

I always admired Kreisler above all violinists. We unfortunately remember him for his recordings of short pieces. And some only know him from his late recordings, when his playing what not at his best. I have reviewed many concert programs of Kreisler. Not only his recital repertoire was gigantic, playing with giants and legends of the piano, as well coupled with great singers, often playing solo partitas and sonatas of Bach, or complete cycles of Brahms and Beethoven piano and violin sonatas, but numbered 42 concerti performed by Kreisler during his career. He also premiered the Elgar concerti which caused quite a sense toion none could even imagine nowadays according to Szigeti. We often say Heifetz was the father of modern violin playing. This is entirely false. According to Flesh and several others, it is Kreisler who innovated and changed it all. Heifetz just went further with technical perfection. I really enjoyed this video MARC, as so many others you shared, and this recording of Bach g minor prelude is absolutely unique in the history of recordings. And you are right about Geminiani and his teachings about the continuous vibrato. I believe it was known and used before Paganini himself. Even Tartini gave clear indications of its use, and vibrato is a natural impulse that existed during the baroque era, and influenced by the contemporary vocal teaching of the time.

You speak about vibrato as if it's somehow something that is wrong.
