I like his pure intonation. Every tone shines, but without pushiness. It shines from inside.

There is a violist there Derek Ratcliffe with whom I shared a 2nd violin desk in the RLPO training
month in 1962 before I went to UCNW and met TV on tour in 1964. Amazing -

He was my teacher for a long time, thank you for sharing this. He is still for me one of the greatest musicians ever. Violinistically same range as much more known viloinists (listen to his recordings of Bartók concerto, Tschaykowsky, Alban Berg and the early recorings with virtuos pieces) but he also was a fantastic conductor of his chamber orchestra. I still remember a concert I was still in high school long time ago. With Igor Oistarch as soloist together playing Bach Double concerto, Mozart D-major concerto (Oistrach as soloist) as encore he played Ysaye Ballad, unforgetable best performance I ever heard of this piece. Second half Mozart g-minor symphony. I never heard this piece like that, full of fire, it was like Don Giovanni in shortform, perfect drama. (When he taught Mozart he often said think of opera even though he didn't like opera that was funny, I love opera what he didn't understand) The audience was totally enthusiastic.
I think his problem was that he was somehow too much interested in so many different things as for example in producing recordings in his own studio in Switzerland where he was musician, sound engineer, producer all in one person. He even mounted recordingmashines by his own plans. He also did some studies in philosphy. He was full of imagination and when he taught chamber music he was able to paint pictures in your head and suddenly you knew how to play it. A man with seemingly unlimited power. As character of course not easy. Contraversal. Sometimes very cynical and some of the students gave up playing the violin. He could be very destructive sometimes. As a teacher well you had to deal with it. He could switch from angel to devil sometimes within a second. But finally a very impressive personality who has influenced many who encountered him. Unforgetable in any case. In my eyes a genius.
I'm grateful that there are still people that commemorate him because he was rather more an insider tip even when he was still performing.

I have the privilege to say that I am a pupil of one of the last Varga's students. My professor studied with Tibor Varga in Graaz, Áustria, for about 5 to 6 years, until maestro Varga's death. He surely was a great master of violin, and I hope that we can keep his legacy alive for a long, long time!

Flawless and so serene. I don’t think this can be improved. I noticed immediately with some amazement what you say about his bowing, right to the very tip, again and again. Thank you so much for sharing this, Varga is new to me. Better than Grumiaux maybe. Just stunning. Technically, his left thumb is also fabulous. High thumb, always working with such intention and support of everything he is doing. Not to mention his intonation, which is just wonderful. Stay well. I look forward to your next post. So much to learn from these masters.

I remember Varga talking in one of the few lesson I had with him about the difference of looking at a rivers drawing on a map, and the real river with flowing water in it. I feel this is what he achieves with the way he uses his bow.
