  • Don't believe ANYTHING you see on social media, and unfortunately that includes those who position themselves as 'real' and champions of 'body positivity'. Karina Irby, the instagram influencer with 1.2 million followers has been exposed as editing her body positive photos, whilst judging others who do the same. Make it make sense! I however can empathise with Karina as I too used to edit my photos, and looking back - it's pretty embarrassing. Either way, I think Karina and those like her dont exactly set out to harm or mislead their fans, i think perhaps they are just victims of these toxic body standards too? What do you guys think? x

To people not understanding why Steph can have empathy for this person: There's a big difference between empathy and approval. You can have empathy regarding the feelings someone has and disapprove the actions caused by these feelings. These are two seperate things, that's what Stephanie explains in the video.

I kinda wish she had straight up said it then? Because all I heard after that train started was excuses and reasons to feel bad for her, not any want or claim she should accept accountability? Empathy is fine but vocalizing the other part is necessary to people thinking you dont approve of it. Instead she just kept saying she gets it, she's done it, and it's not illegal. That's not saying it's bad. She even said she's "not angry with her" and even though her whole brand is not photoshopping, it's ok she photoshopped. That statement is not saying she was in the wrong.

Cassandra Bankson has talked about editing her photos on instgram and her approach was to post both the edited and unedited versions of the same photo of herself typically posted together. That way you can see your perfected image but also still be honest with your followers. I guess a solution like that just wasn’t enough for this influencer.

If body positivity wasn't the specific part of her brand used to sell products, then she's a fraud IMO. We can apply the same logic to when the Kardashians use filters in adverts for selling their makeup/skincare - the whole point is to see the product unfiltered. It's false advertising. If her brand was unconnected to capitalising on the body positivity movement, I'd say she's only human and give her more grace.... but this isn't it for me ☹

Being dolled up is no issue. I'm talking about her ignoring old friends, making appointments for her own friends to hang out, always angry in minor situations when she intends to take photos for social media.
She sometimes pushes the trend of showing the relaxed body, but rarely. Most of her photos look unbelievable and shredded, but she doesn't look like that in person. And she claims to coach for women to be the best version of themselves and to eat freely, but she does things like making contests where the client with the "best transformation" wins free sessions. She has been promoting herself as “natural” and led her audience to believe they could attain something that’s virtually impossible irl (without paying for body altering surgeries).
Sure, she might leave cellulite or something in the photo, but in doing so that would only lead her audience to believe that since she left some parts unedited then she likely left ALL of it unedited.
If she wasn’t making money off her body and the body positivity branding, then I could forgive her. However, she is making a lot of money from deceiving her followers. No matter how you try to frame it, that is unacceptable.

I can empathize with her flawed humanity and self consciousness, sure, but can still hold her accountable for manipulative, conniving, detrimental actions. The second half of this video gave really “we need more mental health resources” when a violent/bigoted/etc thing is done- as though all people with mental health struggles are inherently that way. Plenty, maybe even the majority of femme folks deal with insecurities- the majority of us don’t use those insecurities to manipulate, prey upon, and hurt others. She's also using this as a way to brand and market herself. To tell people to simply not trust anything on social media is an oversimplification. If you're running a business or selling a product consumers deserve transparency. Also just because we can understand why she did it. I think most women in the comments are under the same if not similar social pressures around our bodies, it doesn't justify lying. Who's to say pulling in a waist a little and enlarging a butt is less harmful and less of a big deal than smoothing out cellulite in a photo. Her doing it a little or a lot totally invalidates her message and credibility. I just don't really see how you can be on the fence about it. I mean sympathetic or understanding sure. But in the end she was wrong

When she started dancing funny and showing her cellulite and gained a little bit of weight , I honestly didn't like it at first , but I kept my follower status with her , maybe just to see how it turned out. What's crazy is , over all these years , I eneded up kind of liking her and she grew on me. I still found her to be pretty cringey , but I had aged and matured myself and had grown to appreciate the body positive train a little. I've unfollowed so many influencers over the years , but I guess I just decided to keep following her. All of this news is honestly so insane to me... I think the problem is that models are usually quiet about whether they've edited their pics so you can decide for yourself that it looks too good to be true and ignore it, but when someone is being outspoken about the fact that they've not edited their pics (when really they have) you let yourself trust that this is what actual bodies look like and a good standard to compare yourself to. I feel like the latter is more damaging because it's outright lying rather than open to interpretation.
