iNfLuEnCeRs damaging obsession with tiny waists | why you'll never have one

  • WHY are influencers obsessed with having abnormally tiny waists? Is it to appear more feminine? To look like a Bratz doll? Because most humans have waists big enough to fit their internal organs and therefore by portraying that YOURS is spectacularly tiny you are somehow superhuman? I genuinely don't understand the appeal. YES small waists naturally exist. Some people (myself included) are naturally petite. HOWVER your waist will never be smaller than your head. Period. It's just not physically possible. We have to fit so many internal organs that are literally necessary to sustain LIFE inside our waists. So these influencers you see on Instagram with bellies smaller than their faces? Highly unlikely to be reality. As you'll see in this video, certain tricks such as contorting your body, posing in certain ways, good lighting, photo editing, VIDEO editing, RIB REMOVAL and surgery - all play a part in this strange tiny waist obsession.
    I'd love to get you guys's opinion on this phenomenon that has been happening for hundreds of years now (yep, you heard me - this weird obsession with tiny waists is nothing new!).
    Love ya guts guys,
    Stephanie x

    Fun fact: a lot of those tight lacing examples from the Victorian era are altered to make the waist more tiny. They are always posed in front of a flat dark background and they would just paint the photo to make their waist smaller. Facetune before Facetune.

I've aways been a slim waisted woman, but even I think the massively tinier-than-the-head waist looks more like an alien, than the natural beauty of a woman. All sizes are equally beautiful, and we need to embrace our natural beauty, as that is how we own our personal power. You do a great service by exposing the truth in a very eloquent way. ❤

      Yup, they did a sort of a 'photoshop'... Also their corsets did not make them faint. In fact, many had corsets that were sturdy, yet light enough to do everyday work in them, and only the very rich people (and who knows if all or just some of them) did properly tightlace. Mostly their waists looked tiny due to all the layers they wear as all the layers make their busts and bottoms look very large comparing to their waists..:)

    I think the obsession with smaller wastes will never go away. Generally speaking wider hips are desirable because they signify fertility. But because we are walking on two feet there is a limit to hip size and it cannot get wider and wider. So smaller wastes make the hips seem wider. And that’s what seems appealing to the eye and feminine/fertile.

      @ToxicallyMasculinelol 10 месяцев назад +3

      Personally, and I know it's easier said than done, I would do everything in my power to get my 13 year old daughter off social media. There is no good reason for a 13 year old-especially a girl-to be on the likes of instagram and tiktok. What good can possibly come of it? And on the other hand, we've barely begun to scratch the surface of what kinds of havoc it's wreaking on children, but I think we've all seen enough to know it seriously harms social development and especially self-esteem in young women. I think most people know this, but they just don't want to take charge of the situation, and just allow it to continue to avoid confrontation. But if you think about it in terms of pros and cons, it's pretty stark. There is no benefit whatsoever, except for maybe 0.00001% of individuals who are able to turn it into a business. But everyone else is harmed by it and gains virtually nothing. So it's kind of like playing the lottery, except instead of paying $5 you're giving up your normal neurological and social development and possibly your healthy self-perception. Oh, plus you're wasting _insane_ amounts of time. Thousands upon thousands of hours scrolling aimlessly on a screen, desperately searching for some validating human contact, for the briefest respite from the despair of constantly comparing yourself to an endless feed of apparently superior peers. All time that could have been spent developing actual skills and a normal, healthy personality. Who knows what some of us could have been, had we gone back and done it over without social media?

    I just wanna say I appreciate your videos, I’ve always struggled to be skinny enough for social media (when I had it, 3 years sober).
    I got close to the look but it led to me having an eating disorder. After I was okay with how I looked, I got pregnant, (I was 22, the peak of the “hourglass” figure that I already had but it was not as unrealistic) but obviously your body grows to create life ❤. I had never accepted my body more when I got pregnant, this is how the real body looks and it’s The most amazing thing what Women’s bodies can do. Then I caught my husband looking and saving photos of girls who look like all of these girls, while I was pregnant. I felt low and upset because I felt like I was no longer “attractive” in his eyes. Even though I knew it was fake.
    After I had my daughter my body bounced back super quick thankfully but I don’t care if I match society’s standards, Women’s bodies are beautiful, they’re all unique and that’s perfectly okay! I have stretch marks, and cellulite but I created a beautiful human being, and I have to show my daughter when she grows up what true beauty within yourself means, and honestly I have never felt more beautiful. ❤️🥰

    To my understanding, tight lacing was not commonly as severe as you're saying. Abby Cox and Bernadette Banner cover it quite a bit, and Abby just uploaded a video of herself tight lacing for a day. I wholeheartedly stand with your point that social media is warping our perception of real bodies and centering unreal bodies as trends, I just want to defend the corsets 😅 tight lacing can be comfortable with a properly seasoned corset and body type, and it was common to pad certain areas so that instead of just trying to make one area smaller, it made the area *appear* smaller in comparison to the surrounding areas. While there's obviously still issue with trying to have a "fashionable" silhouette, I think there's something to be said for taking the pressure off the body itself to fit in the standard and to put the emphasis on the structured garments to fit the style you're trying to achieve.

    Re Kendal & Hailey - it’s actually due more to hip size than torso length. If your hips are naturally smaller your waist by comparison will not look as small. It’s the coveted & scientifically proven “waist to hip ratio”. I have this body type & my waist just never looks small & it’s because I have tiny hips. I’ve modelled for 15 years believe me I know exactly what I’m talking about. I have stood next to a model with exactly the same waist measurement as me and because her hips are bigger her waist looks smaller than mine. So I have to get SUPER thin to look like I have a small waist & in my 30s now I’m not sure I can enough 😅 been there done that. I’ve just sent your video to the models I train (I also teach yoga & pilates) - your work/videos are SO important please do not stop 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    The funny thing in history being overweight was the fashionable ideal. It meant you had money and weren't starving to death literally. Tight lacing only existed in fashion for 10 or 20 years throught history. For most of history women, (and men) wore major added padding to their hips, butt, and breasts to give them an hour glass figure. Men tended to wear padding to look more muscular. Guys did wear corsets too. There even was an over hundred year phrase " For what God has forgotten he made cotton". Doing crazy things to fit the social ideal has been around as long as people have existed.

She tells me that she wants a body like these girls she sees on tiktok and instagram. She may only be 11, but she's 170cm tall (I'd kill for her long legs lol) and 54kgs. I suffer from body dysmorphia and my issues are focused on my face.
    Your videos about influencers and natural bodies are so helpful, but I feel like no-one is talking about how people change their faces. Cheekbones, lips, nose, eyelashes, skin (not only acne) there's editing for everything and it makes me so insecure.
    Would love to see any video about this, I think it would help a lot of people.
