I'm a professor who has seen it all, just like in this skit. Once, a COLLEGE student submitted a paper to me with the watermark of the essay-writing company across every page. I'm guessing it was a free sample.
In a society that reeks of unethical behavior being rewarded (Hey, it's just business. If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.), it's obvious the student already knew the value of ethics.
I'm reminded of a class I took a long time ago. We had to read our persuasive essays in front of the class. Some jock figured he'd be slick and plagiarize someone else's work. However he couldn't even be bothered to at least take a few minutes to skim through it before class. In the middle of presenting views which were supposedly his own, he paused for a moment and said "Well, I don't know about THAT." Another brilliantly conceived plan that inexplicably failed to work.

I once had a student put a random sentence in the middle of a paper that claimed I didn’t read all of the papers turned in. The student was trying to see if I would catch it. The sentence was technically correct but I would never admit it.
One of my male students turned in a paper he'd gotten from the net in which the author talked about what she did with her husband. So I asked him "how's your husband?" in front of the whole class. He said "I don't have a husband!" Then I opened his paper and read it out. After the laughter died down, I told him he shouldn't be copying essays off the internet without reading them properly.
When I was in college, I paid a friend of mine, WHO ALSO TAUGHT ENGLISH AT THE SAME SCHOOL, to write a literature essay for me. The paper got an A minus. I was thrilled--he was pissed off about the minus.
@MissX W The only disgusting thing here is your attitude. Not every single person here has the same type of mindset regarding school, and cheating is way more common then you may think. Just because you were able to pass effortlessly doesn’t mean other students have that same ability. I have never cheated during college (I mean, so far) but I don’t mind if other students do. We should all want to help each other out, and if cheating helps them pass and get a successful job then so be it.
@@wordsculpt yeah, well guess what? Some people have other shit going on. I grew up in an extremely abusive household, and I simply didn’t have the ability to do homework or focus in school like many others did-is it better to cheat or to flunk high school and end out a dropout?

Sometimes you need a little time for yourself doing something fun, especially in colleges like mine that are rigorous, but for no real reason since its not a well known school. I had a D level student turn in a film report in which he claimed to have watched Shoah - a 9 hour documentary about Holocaust survivors. I've been unable to watch much of it. His paper used college level words I knew he couldn't even give a definition for. A quick google search gave me the word for word review from a university website. His response to his zero was outrage. Everyone else got a way with it, why should he suffer?
@Pink Alien It is by it's nature very sad and being almost entirely interviews of the elderly, it is very slow paced. It was a very important project to document primary accounts for history, but not an easy thing to watch all the way through. It weighs you down quickly.
John Softcheck what’s crazy is a teacher believed i plagiarized when I did not at all. She had no evidence but believed it because it the essay sounded “too smart”
So true! I experienced this while teaching college! It was so bad that I collaborated with the librarian to create a mini class on plagiarism. I made them take the class on their own time for credit. It did help.
I refuse to believe that grad school professors actual read 50 page papers from a class of 30-40 students. All they do now is run them through the plagiarism checkers. My thesis was absolute crap and I still ended up with an A in the class.
My teacher said she only checked for thesis, three points and evidence. I believe her too because I got a 99 on an essay where I used the same sentences from my intro for my conclusion
Some do and some dont. Also some of them will choose certain students to read. I had a professor that hated me because I made a respectful suggestion that would help us and he didnt really appreciate it. He picked my papers apart sentence by sentence every time. I was an English minor and was getting A's in all my English classes and this was a music history class. Another student literally put a fake quote by Bach with cuss words in block quotes and never got called out. There are other professors who really do care about the success of their classes as well and will read everything. I kind of respect their dedication.
My student submitted a paper to me that had this phrase inside, "to purchase the book by abc author on xyz topic, click here". Another student submitted a paper to me with those reference numbers in brackets [23] etc, and I asked him in class, "I did not see the citations associated with the numbers, and also the numbers are not in order," Of course he had no idea what those numbers represent, just wanted to know if I could get a funny response in turn. Also, during university, my classmate was short of material to meet the total wordings in his essay. So he started quoting a cricket match that he had seen. He didn't expect the teacher would actually read through the 100+ submitted essays. So, when his essay was read aloud in class, we had real fun.
During online school this year, we had to do presentations on the different Native American tribes. This one kid had the Wompanog, and the second the started, everyone saw the reference numbers and the links. He copy lasted and didn't even think to delete the links. Everyone burst into laughter and the teacher immediately gave him an 0.
lol, that last part is familiar to me, my grade 5 teacher told me when he was in uni, he had a teacher who was quite old and always didn't fully read essays, just skimmed them, so my teacher's classmate once wrote some very inappropriate things about the teacher's wife's body parts in the middle of the essay. He got very unlucky though, as the teacher actually read that part and nearly had a heart attack reading it
Kinda have to give props for the cricket. Would give more had it worked. (Some blame goes to the professor for creating a word or page limit. I never, ever do that. I give a ball-park length and tell them that if they can do the assignment in fewer pages clearly and thoroughly, great. I like shorter papers, they're easier to grade. I do usually give fairly strict maximum lengths though; I like my students and I like hearing their ideas, but I also like getting a change to sleep at a decent hour.)
I was a 7th grade science teacher in 1997 and during our unit on the animal kingdom, I had each student do a report on an animal. I had a student stand in front of the class and read word-for-word the encyclopedia entry for "Wales". Worse, no one in the room but me noticed that he wasn't doing a report on "Whales." He talked about Welsh customs and architecture and stuff like that. I wasn't the best teacher in the world; it was my first semester.
Only difference is that most students wouldn't even take the time to plagiarize because that would take some effort. They wouldn't turn in anything and then at the end of the term, their parents would call wanting to know why the teacher failed their child. Then the parents would tell the principal that their child's failure is due to the fault of the teacher because the teacher couldn't teach. The teacher is ALWAYS at fault and all the children are little angels.
Damn what state and which terrible school district did you work for? I’m in one of the top districts on the east coast, this wouldn’t even fly in elementary school 😂 here, plagiarism is automatic suspension and recommendation for expulsion, with a faculty honor code committee that holds trials. I’m guessing you teach at a shitty ass JUCO where most of the kids barely graduated high school or you teach at a college where your an athlete first and then a student.
My chemistry teacher my junior year had everyone write a research paper on the periodic table, and kids did stuff almost exactly like this. Including things like "see graph below" with no graph in their paper
I always enjoyed them not removing those little numbers in wikipedia articles that are all over the place. like "Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the Cretaceous period, about 140 million years ago, and diversified after the rise of flowering plants. More than 12,500 of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been classified.[5][6] They are easily identified by their elbowed antennae and the distinctive node-like structure that forms their slender waists. "
@Pedro Gunderson Uh, actually I teach high school chemistry and I make my kids do full five-part science papers (abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, and discussion sections with a full bibliography and in-text citations), along with their labs. Six major labs and a scattering of minor labs per a semester. This, at a inner-city public school full of 1st gen. immigrants. Sorry, your school wasn't very good.
Amazing how even though this skit aired in 2003, it’s all still relevant today in 2019. What I mean is, not a single website entity he referenced is defunct or sounds dated today. I assumed this maybe aired around 2014/15... so I was surprised just how old it was.
The opposite of this happened to me. When I was in senior year, I submitted a digital self portrait (made from tiny images of my favourite CD covers, like pixels to make an image of my face.) It was not the best thing ever, but for the 2000s I thought it was pretty damn good for a teenager. My Art teacher was old school and thought digital art was bullshit, my final grade was a D... The kicker... The very next year, after I graduated, my little sister brought home the new Student Journal, and on the front cover was my dumb face looking all inquisitive into the distance... THE SAME SUBMISSION THEY THOUGHT WAS BAD ENOUGH TO GRADE A D, THEY THEN THOUGHT WAS A GOOD ENOUGH TO REPRESENT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL THE NEXT YEAR...
Reminds me of how Salvador Dali was ostracised by the surrealist community for his fascination with fascism only to later attempt reclaiming him after his rise to greater popularity. I myself was not encouraged whatsoever at home to pursue art, really more discouraged, and so took no art classes in school until being forced by graduation requirements, councillor error and class availability to join an ART 2 class. A guaranteed pass due to the error not being mine, I still applied myself and made many works. As it turned out, nearly all of these pieces, which I left behind, were later displayed prominently and enduringly in the school and a couple were used in their literature. Sucks being vindicated too late, but at least it was in our lifetimes, reward or not!
My partner never studied or wrote any essays for law school. Instead, he'd go into the library, pretend to be teachers assistant and flirt with the girls at the front desk to get access to the teachers storage. He'd go back into the teaching files and copy stuff from students that had graduated 10-20yrs ago (so the teacher wouldn't remember the papers and recognize he was cheating), and he'd make copies of the tests so that when test day came, he could just copy the answers he wrote on a paper he hid.. Then he'd spend his free time playing basketball. My partners a defense attorney.

In college lab classes I teach, I have had students copy, verbatim, what I wrote in the lab manual (an entire paragraph) and turn that in as part of their lab report (somewhere near the middle), even though I've told them in no uncertain terms that they must submit their own work and can't copy anything. Apparently they thought I wouldn't notice my own writing.
I wish my students cared enough to plagiarize. As it is, I have to read their stream of consciousness gibberish of disconnected, amorphous, half-formed thoughts.

I even saw a professor making fake 'solution' to know who cheated. The solution was full of mistakes general students won't make-not many students think 2 + 2 = 5 or use theories of centuries ago to solve the question.
Way back when, to avoid getting caught copying essays/papers I'd just do the search for them in my mother tongue, spanish, run them through google translate (to avoid doing the bulk of the translation) and then checked for any translation/grammar errors before turning them in. Worked like a charm.

There was a tiny window of about 5yrs you could get away with this. 97’ to 02’ this is when many of the teachers from the 60’s and 70’s were just about to retire and had zero computer skills lol
Best you could do in the 60’s and 70’s was Cliff Notes. You still had to write or type - no cutting and pasting. Cheating was so much harder then. Imagine what AI is doing to education.
Then the professor gives exams that are 100% on quizlet verbatim. When the entire class gets A's on every assignment there might be something going on.
I bet schools do that knowing the students will cheat and it'll look great for the board that funds the school when they look at the student grade statistics. Better grades = more money. Schools pump out inept individuals the country slowly derails itself. If stupidity is normalized in u.s it wont end well. People arent supposed to get offended by being called dumb, it should be embarrassing for starters.
I had a professor who did this, was only 1/3 of our grade. Was a boon as the other 2/3 of your grade was completely subjective and mostly just up to how he was feeling that day.
I had a teacher who knew about the quizlet thing and did nothing, so everyone who used the quizlet would get great grades while the rest of us actually studied (I would have felt too bad if I used it)

My Croatian (I live in Croatia) teacher once got a completely plagiarised paper. But the student actually copy pasted an ad too. It was a foot fungus removal ad.
Reminds me when some guys copied my homework when I was a little kid. They were standing behind me and thought I didn't notice. I made 4 math problems wrong on purpose. I erased the answer and corrected when they left. One idiot asked the teacher why I had all right but he had 4 wrong without looking at my graded paper. Lol
This reminds me of the old joke about a kid who writes on a test question, "I don't know," and the kid cheating off that test wrote, "I don't know either."
When I was younger three people in my class copied off a website. When we got the marks back, our teacher put the website on the board and got each kid to read the first paragraph of their homework and then the paragraph on the board... they copied it word for word, so my teacher decided that she would spend our lesson by making them all rap their homework with alternating lines in front of everyone... rlly funny to watch tho as they weren’t embarrassed and just went for it.
yeah if you are going to plagerize.... switch up the order of things. Change the way it is worded and make sure you have copied and pasted it onto your own document.... or just write your own essay it is really not that hard...
I'm a teacher, and I can verify the behavior of these students. It seems like they believe they are both INCREDIBLY clever, and the first person to ever tell a lie. EVER. Oh, and they'll try to call a teacher's bluff, even though it's easy to verify things or take action against them. Their confidence is...well, disconcerting. As is their confidence in their own intelligence and ability. Some of them. Some are awesome and give me hope that they'll be able to compensate for the kids features in the above sketch.

I remember in my first semester of university we had a C++ programming test where we all had to type up a code and email our solutions to the teacher in the lab itself and leave. So I did my test fairly easily and my friend next to me was struggling. So he's like "bro please email me your solution" So I'm like "yeah sure I'll do it" And so once I finished and submitted mine, I mailed the solution to my friend. But if you are teaching high school or under-systems that follow a much more rigorous curricula and teaching is all you get, i would not say don’t do it but know that you need to have tons of patience and it’s more draining than rewarding.

@MissX W lmao chill out dude, who the fuck cares??
@MissX W The only disgusting thing here is your attitude. Not every single person here has the same type of mindset regarding school, and cheating is way more common then you may think. Just because you were able to pass effortlessly doesn’t mean other students have that same ability. I have never cheated during college (I mean, so far) but I don’t mind if other students do. I'd like to say this is an exaggeration, but I've really had plagiarists who genuinely were this mind-numbingly stupid and worse.
If you have seen worse, then this may not be an exaggeration.
@Pink Alien It is by it's nature very sad and being almost entirely interviews of the elderly, it is very slow paced. It was a very important project to document primary accounts for history, but not an easy thing to watch all the way through. It weighs you down quickly.

Brian PRM there are teachers who care about their class. I had some of them
It's called:
Teacher's Assistant.
My teacher said she only checked for thesis, three points and evidence. I believe her too because I got a 99 on an essay where I used the same sentences from my intro for my conclusion
Actually, we do. At least some of us.
Well, lower limit wording quotas are bad and should not exist in the first place. They encourage bad writing practices and devalue the content.
lol, that last part is familiar to me, my grade 5 teacher told me when he was in uni, he had a teacher who was quite old and always didn't fully read essays, just skimmed them, so my teacher's classmate once wrote some very inappropriate things about the teacher's wife's body parts in the middle of the essay.
I'm not going to lie, but this is one of the best skits ever.
*Tbh I gotta agree*

He talked about Welsh customs and architecture and stuff like that. I wasn't the best teacher in the world; it was my first semester.

As a former teacher, this is a pretty accurate representation of what goes on in classrooms. It really isn't comedy; it is reality.
Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the Cretaceous period, about 140 million years ago, and diversified after the rise of flowering plants. It was not the best thing ever, but for the 2000s I thought it was pretty damn good for a teenager.

I myself was not encouraged whatsoever at home to pursue art, really more discouraged, and so took no art classes in school until being forced by graduation requirements, councillor error and class availability to join an ART 2 class. A guaranteed pass due to the error not being mine, I still applied myself and made many works. As it turned out, nearly all of these pieces, which I left behind, were later displayed prominently and enduringly in the school and a couple were used in their literature.

yeah if you are going to plagerize.... switch up the order of things.
I plagiarized myself once. I was in 12th grade Creative Writing class. The class was, shall we say, very low-grade on the intellect, and the teacher had low expectations. The night before we were supposed to turn in our final fiction story that we were to have been working on all year, I found something I had lying around that I wrote in eighth grade, retyped it, and turned it in. She gave me a C, and she wrote on it that it was "almost too good" and that she had a "hard time believing" I wrote it! God only knows how awful everyone else's papers were, for mine to shine so. I wanted to show her the four-year-old source document, but I just went up to her desk and said, "I don't know what to tell you. I wrote this." She took it back and then gave me an A- the next day. The minus, I suppose, just to show me she still had doubts.
lol that’s a good story
@Peter McGill you have to cite yourself 😂

@@tinaz.6137 I did this myself already in college.
And you feel good about yourself???
in high school, i was in AP English my last 2 years and we had to churn out an essay in 40 minutes often. Timed writes are a part of the AP exam so we had to really get good at improvising a literary analysis
I once had to failed 26 out of 28 students for cheating, some similar to this... One guy submitted the first chapter of the book he was supposed to review.
Hahahaha
Can you tell why some of the other atudents were failed?
I witnessed a similar thing as the undergrad TA for a science class where the prof and graduate TA had three tiers of "similarity to Chegg solutions" for a hw. Two thirds ended up getting zeroes for it, including students in the major for this class
I remember in my first semester of university we had a C++ programming test where we all had to type up a code and email our solutions to the teacher in the lab itself and leave. So I did my test fairly easily and my friend next to me was struggling. So he's like "bro please email me your solution"
So I'm like "yeah sure I'll do it"
And so once I finished and submitted mine, I mailed the solution to my friend. And I forgot about it until 2 days later.
We got our grades, and surprisingly, my friend and I got 0/20! I'm like wtf we gotta talk to the teacher. And so we asked our teacher what happened. And do u know what happened? That dumbass friend of mine forgot to remove my name and add his name in the submission!! And not only that, he didn't even send a separate email to the teacher. He just forwarded the email I sent him! And it clearly shows I emailed him first! FML
@@gurgy3 your the sharp 1 of the group. The comment plainly stated"we both got 0/20"as in 0 out of 20(a dumbass truck driver is explaining this 2 u)
Curtis Kretzer gurgy3 said that they deserved the 0’s they got, this is me explaining this to you lol
@@gurgy3 Curtis Kretzer stopped short of explaining that a 0 out of 20 is also just zero and Patrick O'Donnell reaffirmed that they both did receive zeros. (See chart below)
You deserve that for cheating.
I appreciate that you were trying to help your friend but you guys shouldn’t have cheated to begin with- you will always get caught in the end
Parnell's calm demeanor is perfect and funny.
Waldo San Miguel He isn’t called “The Iceman” for nothing.
I once had a student who handed a paper copied and pasted from wikipedia, he did't even delete the hyperlinks.
I liked this sketch. It was simple, had the right amount of laughs, and Chris Parnell is just a genius at playing those classy and sophisticated characters.
5:08 he caught that so smoothly tho
Did you make that at 112 Mathews. Do you even know what the front fountain is. And the dimensions.
It's 179"
Side to side. What's that. I didn't hear you.
That's actually a PVC board above the fountain head. Did you frame that level it and do the fall for water?
Chris Parnell :}:}:} love archer!
Rob Green and Rick and morty
In one of my college math courses, the professor made our final a take home exam. Immediately, one student posted the question on a math forum site and the professor replied to it. It was so funny.
Did the student die?
Second SNL sketch I've seen that has to do with plagiarism. The first was in a 1995 episode David Hyde Pierce hosted, which also took place in a classroom. Although there, the teacher praised his students' work, not mentioning that they plagiarised.
That part with ESPN reminded me of the Roonil Wazlib moment with Snape from HBP
Seth Meyers is SERIOUSLY cute!!!!!! And tbh honest he maybe got even better!?
you are Seth Meyers with a fake account aren't you?
Yes he did. He so totally did. How is that even possible?
he's cut now when he's hair isn't blonde
Wtf. You're stupid.
This is hilarious! 😂Plagiarism is everywhere; whatever you put online, will be taken by soul-less, thirsty wanna be poets, writers, singers; particularly on twitter. I have a beautiful friend that is a writer, and mistakenly shared her words behind closed doors with some random guy she met, and suddenly he is a poet on twitter with all her words. 😂So many copycats on twitter-x, but she learned not to be-friend lonely, old desperate dudes. Now he takes song lyrics and twists them around, calling himself brilliant. So many frauds! They will never know what they have inside, but being lazy and taking from others.🤔
The description says history, but this clearly English literature lol 😂😂
I searched all of these up and turns out they didn't plagiarise.
But you did.
It's almost like it's a skit and not real life.
That fake phone call thing reminded me of when Ferris Bueller impersonated Abe Froman.
Except he did it much smarter...
Ferris didn't impersonate on the phone. Sloan called restaurant asking for him. I think you're thinking of when Cameron impersonated George Peterson
More like the movie Big Fat Liar
I love how this went from plagiarism to impersonating a photographer 😂😂😂
