    $230 for fancy Tupperware? Hell no. My old dish rag works just fine. Thanks for the info man, but that thing is just too rich for my blood. How does this thing cost more than like $40?

    Hey Ryky. I have the Shapton pond and although its a lot of money it is great, its actually tempared glass like the glass stones. You awt to check out the Shapton stone holder, NOT the field version, the one Im talking about which I have is like a brick of glass incased in rubber (Shapton no:50200) I really like that too. Thats also really heavy (about the same weight as the pond) It gives great knuckle clearance and with been heavy doesn't move at all. The Shapton stuff is designed to work well together, which it does. But only problem is they are too expensive for a lot of people. I think I payed about £90 for my stone holder, so it might be about the same price ($90) in dollars in the US.

    I made a bridge out of scrap lumber from a decking project that fits over my kitchen sink. Cost under $5. Easy access to water and easy cleanup. Rather spend my $ on stones. But it was interesting to see and I appreciated your effort to make it work

    Man, I have no idea why that thing should cost more than 50 bucks.

    I think you should turn this 90 degree, more space for knuckle left and right. Or move stone to left side, you will have double space for knuckle on right

      I was thinking the same thing - even aligning it diagonally might help.

    • @razcor256
      @razcor256 6 лет назад +1

      I didn't think about the diagonal but I fully agree about shifting the stone to the left a little more for the clearance issue.

    I use a full size (26"x 18" x 1.125") rimmed sheet pan from a restaurant supply store (I believe a half size, 18" x 13" x 1.125" would work as well, depends on how much water you need to trap) it cost me $5, plus the rubber & stainless stone holder for $15. I added the non-slip rubber shelf liner below the pan on the table to keep if from moving, so for less than $25 I have my complete setup. I simply keep a large glass of water to pour over the stone as needed. Plenty of knuckle room without needing any additional lift. I store the pan on it's side in a closet when not in use.

    I don't get it... The Kramer sink bridge takes up virtually no room stored while not in use. There is no concern about hitting knuckles. For $300 you get 3 sharpening stones, a cleaning stone and the bridge. It honestly looks like the best deal for the money and ease of use compared to the plastic tub set up and the fancy pond shown. I guess the only concern regarding the Kramer bridge is the amount of slurry that will go down your drain potentially causing a plumbing problem (really, this is a serious concern?). I'm still a noob & open to learning. Thanx for making the videos.

      i hear you. there doesn't seem to be a perfect solution for a budget, stable, sharpening station yet.... it's time o develop something.....

    • @TacticalStrudel
      @TacticalStrudel 6 лет назад +2

      I’m no plumber but I don’t see how a little slurry going down the drain will cause a problem. People send WAY more down the drain just going through their daily lives than some fine metal shavings and ceramic dust.
      You make a good point on the Kramer system, I didn’t realize what a value it was til I went to add a bridge ...

    Hi Ryky. I live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. I was thinking about your shapton pond and I saw a video about the dmt duo base. You should try the duo base in the pond. If it fits in the pond you can just lay your stones on the four rubber pads on the base and use that in the pond. You would have 2 inches of clearance plus the height of the stone you are using at the time. I appreciate all your videos on sharpening and the reviews of stones. On your recommendation I purchased a king kds. Very happy with it. I am a beginning free hand sharpener because of your videos. Jdavis882 started me on trying to sharpen free hand. But, your videos got me to actually start. Thank you for all that you do for us.

    I use a $5 yoga pad to sharpen on top of my table. I usually only do 2-3 knives in a session. But the yoga pads are surprisingly absorbent. If its a long session i just dump it over sink once it stops absorbing or use a paper towel.

    Buy once cry once, I wish I would have had one of these years ago (I could have avoided plastic tubs, stainless steel server, bridge, holder, etc), unit is made from first rate materials and fully thought out (edge height is below their flattening plate for example allowing you to use the plate in the pond). Turn the pond sideways and you can put multiple holders in the pond (the heavy one) as well as the sharpening plate.

    Hi Ryky great presentation (I realize this video was done 5 years ago). In my humble opinion this Shapton pond adds no value because you're having to improvise the sharpening base and the stone holder. Thanks again for your commitment to teaching sharpening techniques and equipment!

    Great channel Ricky. Hey man, and I know you and others will laugh at this request, but would you mind doing a vid on knife sharpening for dummies. Like, what is this stone, what's it made of, why do you soak it in water, what's a burr, what's the grit, and how to sharpen for starters? I'd like to start sharpening but I'm a noob.

    I like the pond because I will sharpen knives on a wood working table located under my covered patio. I have decided to buy diamond plates instead of stones because it is faster and can always purchase 3000, 5000 or high number stones for polishing the knives. I do not think that polished kitchen knives are necessary and collector knives are never used. I could use a brick and on a plastic tub but, I know that my wife would get very mad and throw away any kitchen knife sharpened with a brick.

    lol I love the concept of someone who cares enough to buy this shapton sharpening pond for like 200$ but then decides to use a brick in it as a stone holder rather than spending another 100 on the actual shapton stone holder to go with it.

    $230 ? I made myself a bridge to go over a similar container to the one you use it cost me maybe $30 and you could probably make one for half that if you wanted I used decent wood. Fun DIY project no power tools needed but a drill just map it out and have a hardware store cut the wood to size. Total investment was roughly $40 and in reality you can just grab a piece of wood and some wall puffy and call it a day!

  • @khlah0710
    @khlah0710 6 лет назад

    If your tray was slipping then the rubber mats you used on the brick would have solved that problem. Using the pond you now need a second container to soak stones in whereas with the deeper cheaper trays they can be soaking whilst you use the others. Hand on heart if you watched a video of the Pond in use at $230 would you have bought one, bearing in mind you either need an additional bridge/support or restrict usage to Chosera stones? For my limited usage it's way too expensive but I cab see it being popular as a Guuci bit of kit. Desirable but nowhere near essential.

    • @Burrfection
      @Burrfection  6 лет назад

      its' not for everyone, like i pointed out in the video. it's great if it suites your very specific needs, but yes, people new to sharpening can easily buy it because of hype. it's NOT essential, but is well designed.

      Ultimately the Shapton Pond is for Shapton stones and similar stones that you don’t soak, you also should be using the Shapton Holder.

    Please tell me, many people after shapton glass 500 switch immediately to 2000, is it rational or desirable to use glass 1000 in the interval. I used shapton pro 1000 after glass 500 and it seemed to me that it even worsened the result after 500, now I sold pro 1000 and I think do I need to buy glass 1000 as an intermediate? Sharpened carbon steel and mild steel

    Yes the pond is expensive, don't bash it for it that here, there are those that will like it and want to spend the money and that's okay. There are plenty of sharpening set ups out there you can create for next to no money and do the same job as someone willing to dump over 200$ into this. It's preference and what works best for you and your current situation.
    The pond looks perfect height for your sharpening with your current set up, standing and with that table, at least to how I like to be positioned in my own sharpening. I own shapton glass stones and their base but can't justify the pond or their lapping plate due to costs. They make very nice products and I bet I'd like the lapping stone a lot compared to using an atoma or other diamond plate, but the price is awfully steep. I prefer having a cambro and bridge set up myself because I don't always stick with splash and go stones.
    Naniwa bridge can be found cheaper out there for people looking, but you should buy through the affiliate to give this man a little kick back. He makes good content, a lot of which I wish I had the time and set up to make videos and put out myself. Keep it sharp everyone.
