      I've got a cheap one and it works really well, with excellent sound quality. I haven't used it for bluetooth as of yet, as I just have a flash drive of music plugged into it. You just have to pick a frequency with no interference. If you're reguarly travelling long distances, it would be a hassle having to change the frequency if you start getting interference from local FM stations, but there are some cheap ones which have an auto scan function which will automatically find a suitable frequency.

    I bought one of those on Amazon a few years back. It has a really nice feature in that the remote that hangs out of the tape deck also doubles as a charging cable, so I can charge it while driving. The downside is that there’s a loose connection inside somewhere, because I lose the right channel intermittently. Makes my 80s thrash metal much less fun.

    The soldering iron and opening the radio up method deserves some credit however for the improvement in sound quality over the cassette adapters. I've done a considerable amount of 'hacking' stock radios, including making the original VFD display show mp3 song titles, etc, but piping bluetooth audio into the amplifier directly is one of the easier ones you can do - no shame in learning a little electronics hacking!

    I drive an 85 Mercedes Benz 500 SEC and had the original Becker tape deck/radio rebuilt by Becker to add an aux input for my phone, iPod, etc. I could have chosen Bluetooth over the aux, but really liked the idea of quality hard wired audio. Now I kind of wish I had them convert for Bluetooth. Oh well. Eventually I will rebuild the sound from the ground up and yes, that means a new head unit. Fortunately there are a few units out there that have the 80's vibe and can even match the amber lighting of that time.

  • @matthiasmartin1975
    @matthiasmartin1975 3 года назад +1

    A properly designed cassette adapter would use the winding mechanism to turn the thing on and off, maybe those exist, maybe not. I personally would find it very satisfying to hack old original radios to add BT and make it smooth and invisible, but that's just because I am maker and i am very comfortable with electronics. Your advice is very sensible for everyone else.

  • @luckyo11
    @luckyo11 4 года назад +1

    The other option is to have a similar BT input system, but one that is a low power FM transmitter. Then you just find a frequency that is free and transmit on it while setting your car radio to receive on this frequency. Upsides include universality (works with any FM capable system), better sound quality (C-cassettes are far worse than static-free FM stereo, doubly so with aged read head on the player) and the fact that most of them will also feature a couple of USB out charger ports. Downside is that those usually require more power than a small internal battery could provide, so you have to plug it into 12V mains on your car.
    And they cost next to nothing. You can find good examples for 10-20 USD on amazon. Just type "bluetooth FM transmitter" into search.

  • @GilBatesLovesyou

    I've always just gone the aftermarket head unit route. One car I did keep the stock cassette deck for a few years, until cassette functionality stopped working, should have went aftermarket sooner. Usually most cars have readily available harness adapters for $10 or so. I honestly don't like bluetooth and prefer to just have the mega flash drive full of music. I also have aftermarket head units I got 10 years ago that are still relevant today, with iPhone control, mp3 playback, HD Radio, etc. The one I got 10 years ago has been in 4 cars. Either keep the stock head unit to put back in the car when you sell it, or in some cases on old cars the stock head units are $100+ on ebay now. I even sold a lowly 1990s Nissan stock radio for $20 on ebay.

    Good to know they make bluetooth versions of these, though. My dad is fixing up an '04 that has a tape deck or CD player but no aux input or bluetooth so he'd probably like this. Before this I had only seen a product that broadcasts a short range radio signal - you set the device to a frequency while it's plugged into your phone/mp3 player, then you set your car radio to the same one, and the audio plays through your radio.... until you drive through some area that actually has a radio station on that signal, anyway.

  • @Dowlphin
    @Dowlphin 4 года назад +2

    0:38 Oh man! I actually had an MC with Beach Boys music. Like, bought! 😃 (I had to when I encountered "I Get Around" in Flight of the Navigator.)
    3:19 Those adapters would only feel really oldschool and rad if they had a tape moving that was being magnetized in realtime. 😎
    5:24 I also got 6x9 in my car, and audio snobs would probably mock that format, but mine are not Sony Xplode but German Maestro. 😎
    And as is soooo annoyingly often the case, you have to decide which downsides to accept for the upsides. (convenience vs. quality would be an easy choice if they didn't make the on/off extra-tedious) Sadly, if you found and bought one of those things for $100, it could still be crap. Price is a factor, but not a reliable guideline.
    10:10 When I got a stereo for SD card, I should have gotten a Kenwood, but got a Pioneer because the features sounded better, but turns out the seek times are awful. And it has a rattling frame. Lots of money and effort for a disappointing result. - Also, my old Kenwood had a bezel that slowly motorically turned around so it looked like there is no stereo installed. That was so awesome. - One time a work collegue got into the car with me and was like: "No radio?" I said: "Nah." and then turned the ingition key and he was like: "WOAH!". 😄

    • @Ktulu789
      @Ktulu789 4 года назад +1

      About the seek times: damn! I had a cheap SD/pendrive chinese stereo. When it had over 700, up to 1400 songs (or files, just putting the every day pendrive with files and 10 MP3 was slow AF) it went at 1 sec to skip with 700 and about 3 or more to skip with 1400 files. So I used a 4 Gb pen with just over 2.5 Gb of music, give or take, so the performance wasn't too bad.
      I always thought the problem was that the stereo was cheap chinese crap... turns out even a Pioneer performs like that. Good to know!
      Probably has to do with pendrive's file system and low amount of memory in the stereo to cache the file table... I tried formatting it as NTFS and DAMN! Seek times where over 5 secs, unbearable. Went back to FAT32.

      P.s. I built one of these as a kid (wired, not blueteeth). Took a recording head out a duff cassette recorder and wired it to the cable. Simples. The good thing about these BT versions is, they should be able to apply equalization in the bluetooth DSP chip for better sound because the functionality is already there.

    There is even an easier and better way to have Bluetooth in your car with out physically install it, it's call "Transmitter FM". They're many brands and there for looks/designs of the transmitter, but I personally like Xiaomi Roidmi 3S FM transmitter. The transmitter it self looks like an ordinary cigarette charger, it may charge your device but after you pair it with your phone it will play the music of your choice via radio waves witch your radio will pic up do to the proximity between the devices.

      @MrGellert15 4 года назад

      @@danmartin7823 I prefer the look of the original radios on these old cars, they were talking about the hack where you solder a bluetooth audio reciever's output to the casette tape's signal wires inside the radio and put an empty casette shell in the radio so it will turn on but play the bluetooth audio. Quite an easy way to upgrade old radios to bluetooth radio head and preserve the original look.

    A better way is to just buy a Cassette Adapter with a Aux cable and then buy a Bluetooth Receiver and plug the Aux cable from the Cassette Adapter into the Bluetooth Receiver that way you don't have to worry about always charging the Cassette but I recommend removing the battery from the Bluetooth Receiver so it doesn't leak or explode from being in your car in the heat and just plug it into a USB Port that way the Bluetooth Receiver always has power.
