    With all due respect, you can't expect much out of a $150 camera. If you want to see faces and car plates clearly you would have to invest thousands of dollars into those fast FPS IP cameras that plugs into a POE box-like Lorex or those brands. Smart cameras like Ring, Nest, etc are not meat for getting crispy 4K footage at a sub $200-300 price tag. Its consumer-grade camera, quality is on par with most laptop 1080p and 4k webcam or older smartphone cameras. It's supposed to be an affordable option for everyone to get into the "smart home" tech stuff. so I feel like the comparison is a little unfair. great information by all means, but you are comparing apples to oranges.

    • @GarageGoals
      @GarageGoals  5 лет назад +3

      Its not apples to oranges its stated 1080p camera that doesn't produce true HD video. These cameras are nearly $200 each plus subscription meanwhile at Costco you can get Lorex 4k systems with 8 cameras for $699

    • @mike.canvas
      @mike.canvas 5 лет назад +1

      @@GarageGoals when i download my footage from my Ring cameras, its 1920x1080, so i don't know what "true" 1080p is if the dimensions are of that. it all depends on the sensors. you can't expect Lorex sensors to be the same quality of Ring's or Nest's. Even my Nest Cam IQ advertise 4k sensor with 1080p zooming without losing quality, it's still the same quality as the Ring's camera if compared side by side. And for the Lorex system to have a really great quality to see faces clearly and license plates, you would have to spend over $6,000 on their Nocturnal line, the zoom-in particular, and even with that, it's not promising, cause you need at least a 60fps or higher to capture detail clearly in both daylight and night time. I'm not trying to attack you, but I've spent a lot of money on both consumer-grade "smart cameras" like Ring, Nest, etc, and some better IP cameras without a lot of the "smart" stuff, you just gotta know what you're buying and not have high expectations from it. Price is subjective, each brand will offer different prices and monthly plans based on their features. Lorex has monthly cloud storage for their IP cameras too if you want double backup of your storage, both on the NVR and in the cloud.

      This is a true statement. 1080p video is only 2 megapixels of information. For anyone familiar with digital photography, you will know that 2MP is not enough pixels to get a quality zoom. Expecting license plate reading at that distance with 2MP is a bit unrealistic. This is really just math. If you note how little of the frame that license plate is oocupying you can calculate how many pixels you have and it's not much. I am an IT manager and at our facility we have approximately 26 IP cameras (mostly from Axis - a popular brand in the space) and I can tell you that none of our 2MP cameras would be able to much better at that distance. So this review really is more of a review of the limitations of a 2MP surveillance camera rather than Ring specifically.

      @ants mirez Ring is good and I own 3, but since they are motion dependent cameras only, I had to buy a 24 hour recording camera to cover my front house area and front Street action. Overall, no one set of cameras will appease everyone's needs unless money is not an issue.

      Those are mostly for small indoor rooms, or a small patio area. I have one in my house facing entry doors and it clear enough for me and the motion zone area is for sure not gonna catch the license plate on that car. Dude invest more money for what you are looking for.

    Connecting by WiFi or over POE will do nothing to increase the cameras resolution of 1080P it will be the same. I don't know if you have taken a look at other 1080P Security cameras but it is the limitation of the 1080P resolution of the camera itself that will not be able to read license plates at 40 feet? and true of all brands.. You are correct about needing a 4K NVR system then you will be able to read it. As for the water getting into the camera, you did not have the camera back installed. How do you know it is not recording in 1080P, did you down load the video to a computer and check the size. There is reports of if your internet Upload speed is not able to get the required 1-2Mbps that it can down grade the quality. What is your internet upload speed at your location. There is a RUclips LifeHackster who does a ton of Security camera reviews and he includes samples of reading license plates from 10 to 40 feet with 1080P, 5MP and 4K cameras. Disappointing review.

      The issue is usually user error. People don't read (sometimes I'm guilty of it) the descriptions and restrictions of products; most of these cameras are basic; I have a camera that pan/zooms/tilts in addition to my simplisafe security system. Sometimes you have to mix and match in order to have the perfect system at an affordable price.

    I live in Niagara Falls, which is near Buffalo. So the weather is terrible. . I was wondering if you could tell me how long the cord is, for the plug in. If I do buy, I don't know if my outlet is close enough. I was going to buy this for outside, but you make a valid point about no protection for a wet climate. Can you recommend a plug in camera for an area that has a wet climate, or should I just stick with buying a ring pro or nest doorbell? PS, I love the cars in the back ground and I miss living in phoenix.

      I definitely know that climate well up near Buffalo as I grew up in Toronto. I would honestly grab a 4k IP Camera set from Costco. They have Lorex which is a decent brand and also has LED spotlights on them as well as 2 way talk. Thats the direction I am going to go plus they are fully waterproof and come with a waterproof case for the LAN cord connection so its protected in the elements. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Limitations and Applications: I have a 3rd generation stick-up batteried cam. After watching your video, I have tested my cam out on my driveway and inside my living room. The cam can see the license plate of my car from 20 feet away with a direct sight of view. If the car is parked on the right side of the driveway where the cam is. I can see the license plate. If the car is parked on the left side of the garage, I cannot see the license plate clearly. The distance that I can see the car license plate is about 20-22 feet and it must be a direct sight of view. It's more than 22 feet. It's not good. I have a Lorex 1080p closed-circuited cam mounted at the center of the driveway. I can see the license plate clearly from 25 feet away where or not the car is parked on the right, center or left of the driveway. So the Lorex cam is a little bit better than the Ring stick-up cam. The difference is the FOV of the Lorex cam is 88 degrees and the FOV of the Ring cam is 115 degrees. The cam in the video is a wired version. Its FOV is 150 degrees. It's much wider. So it has a fish-eyed effect. The license plate must be positioned at a direct sight of view order to be seen at 20 feet away. In the door, the sticked-up cam performed a bit better. For us to see a license plate of a car from 25-30 feet away, we need a 2.5K or 4K cam.

    I use the Ring stick up came in the front of my home, and I am just about ready to just take the thing down. You are right regarding the video clarity, but like Mike stated we probably should not expect that much from a camera at this price. I use Lorex 4K cameras and they give me the video clarity that I need. I invested about a grand for a two camera and DVR system. The problem that I am having with my Ring Stick Up cam is that it continues to disconnect from my wifi. I have ruled ou that it is my wifi because I have one of the old versions of the Ring Stick Up camera installed on my fence in the back yard, powered from a solar panel, and it has worked flawlessly for years, never disconnecting. This camera is much farther from the router and the signal has to pass through two walls to get to the backyard. I was just sent a new Stick Up cam from Ring, after I spent a ridiculous amount of time with their phone support troubleshooting a camera that would not connect to the wifi at all. The new camera works for a while but then started to disconnect from the wifi in less than a day. I am pretty much done with the camera, I am just glad that I do not depend on the RING Stick Up camera for the main protection of my home. The other items from Ring that I own such as the doorbell work well.

    But if there’s something you need to see in then you do the download for 1080p
    It doesn’t always record in that higher quality because the storage is crazy
    Also if you narrow the width of the view so it’s less of a fish eye the quality gets better.
    I’ve never had the stick up cams I had the spotlight cams all round the house just run from the app not the key pad
    But I managed to identify somebody’s tattoos on their legs from the street

    The reviewer is right on! This Ring wired camera has too much of a fisheye effect and therefore you give up having the close-up view of something such as a license plate. This camera has a battery version too and it does not have the fisheye effect as the wired version. Will give a closer view but then you give up some of the field of view angle. I believe the wired is 150 degrees whereas the battery version is 116 degrees so is a trade-off but I think is worth it as is important to see closer-up like the reviewer here states. You can add a solar panel to the battery camera so don't need to mess with batteries but can still keep a battery in the camera as a back-up.

      Thanks Mike! I'll probably be trying a Lorex 4k wired POE IP system next. I like that it has motion activated LED spotlights that illuminate at night and still has two way talk like the ring. Either way I'll post up what we do next so stay tuned 👍

    Real wifi 4k cameras will eat up your internet bandwidth and clog your internet. Maybe when wifi 6 and 5g becomes widespread, ring will release 4k cameras. But be prepared to pay more. They will be more expensive. Anything between 400 and 600 dollars per camera.
    You want a higher quality camera. You,ll have to pay more. You want camera,s that can view number plates with clarity from afar?
    Then you,ll have to spend like 6000 dollars on commercial grade security equipment.
    There,s a reason why this video has almost as many likes as dislikes.

    Look man , I dont want to be rude but , you know nothing about security cameras . Rather go speak to someone that does , get an OUTDOOR camera for starters and use what you have indoors ( Sigh ) . OH and while youre at it , ask the expert to teach you how best to set up said cameras , that way they may work they way Ours all work .
