When Peter capaldi was casted lots of people were very pissed about his age. Although we know the doctor is really old NuWho fans used to see young guys playing him. The thing with Clara is quite understandable, she saw all them but only 11 was her real friend and it’s hard to see him changing that much, not only appearance wise but there’s huge change in his personality (you’ll see it even more in future episodes). this episode started with him not even recognising her, of course she’d want her old friend (she travelled with him for 3 years!) back. They’ll have tough times, but I think everyone who’s watched their run would agree that Clara&twelfth are The Companions, they work way better than with the eleventh.

Matt Smith leaving DW had a lot of people grieving, so Steven Moffat wrote all the I'm the New Doctor stuff to help people move on

I think the big reason they dedicated so much of this episode to begging Clara to accept the new Doctor’s face was that they were really begging the audience to accept Peter Capaldi at the time.
In the older series, the Doctor was typically an older, professor-like character. In the modern series, with David Tennant & Matt Smith, the Doctor became a much younger, love interest-type character which largely contributed to Doctor Who gaining popularity. It went from being a cult sci-fi show for nerds to a higher production series with a much larger audience during the 10th & 11th Doctors’ seasons.
I’m sure they knew it was a risk to go from young, attractive lead actor to an older, much more serious Doctor. They knew a good portion of their recently acquired fan base was going to be thrown off, and some people would even be upset about the big change and stop watching altogether. I agree with you that the begging is bit overdone and pretty out-of-character for Clara, but it leads up to the phone call from Matt Smith which I’m sure the fans at the time really loved.

Thank you for explaining this as you might be aware that I am very unaware of what actually goes around during the production and so on, it would seem from all the comments I read that people knew before hand who the Doc would be. Which is another reason why people were upset at me for not recognizing him in previous ep 😆 okay makes more sense now. Still liked the ep overall though.

To clear your confusion, Clara only properly met 10 and the war Doctor during the 50th anniversary that was pretty brief, all the other Claras that met all the other Doctors were duplicate of her with their own lives, memories, experiences, they weren't really her, so she only really know and bonded with 11. There's a comic where Clara and 12 meet one of her duplicate, it clears it a little better, this was interesting
Also, all the dialogues with Vastra or this episode in general is brilliant, letting go of the idea of the Doctor, they're directly talking to the audience, I absolutely love it :)
Moffat said in a recent interview, that was the point of Matt Smith, he could make 11 do the most awful things, with his cute baby face we don't mind and still love him ^^ And that's the point of 12's entire run, 'what kind of Doctor is he?' the veil is down, he's not wearing any pretty make up anymore, the Doctor is the Doctor raw, he's been like that since the revival, but here we truly see him, no funny smile, no dashing long coat and sexy winks, no wiggly arms and funny bow ties, can Clara and the audience put up with him now that he revealed his true face? Is he a good man? I love it (the series 8 trailers also played with the concept)

The creatures the doctor met before are the same robots from the david tennant story girl in the fireplace.... if u recall, they kill people for spare parts, just like these in this story

A cool thing I learned is that the face mask that the doctor takes off is an old face mold they had of Matt Smith which is ironic.

I had mixed feelings about Capaldi at first. But he really does grow on you.

You can pretty much forget about the Impossible girl arc. I dont think its ever really brought up again, and Clara's characterization doesn't really make sense if you think about her in that context.

The whole 'i dont know who you are anymore' thing would have been a very good stroyline for any other companion but it just didnt work for clara, didnt make sense at all, shes not just seen the regens but she was physically there right from the start she was there when he first took the tardis she even told him which one to take, she has been there for every moment of his entire life and suddenly now shes all 'who are you' cause he regenerated? it just didnt work for me

Erm... I'd say that's pretty unrepresentative of what's happened if you ask me. This is a common misconception and argument for not liking the Clara of this series. If you couch it correctly, then it makes a better argument. This original version of Clara spent time with 11 and more brief time with 10, The War Doctor, and now 12.

Most of the fans who complain about the Doctor's age were 99% young people who never watched Classic Who because they were use to the previous 3 younger Doctors they've been denied of the first original eight we've had older Doctors before so it's nothing new really personally for me I don't really care I like and much prefer an older more mature 50's something Doctor so this was a nice departure from the previous 3 and Peter Capaldi felt like a Doctor more back to form with the classics the one thing Peter Capaldi insisted on was no romance with the companions he's more back to being completely a-sexual I was alittle annoyed about the Matt Smith cameo I don't think that needed to be there I think it was there as a message to the fangirls to get over it the Doctor is not hot anymore but the character was never designed to be hot to begin with unfortunately we now live in this ageist and narcissistic society and it's just ridiculous.
Anyway sorry to the episode it was a great episode Clara got alittle annoying it was nice to see Vastra, Strax and Jenny again the half robot faced man was creepy and have done a very good job at the make-up and whose this mysterious Missy who knows will find out well I already know the fun thing is you don't ;).
The poor man on the street the Doctor talks too is the real life husband of Elisabeth Sladen who played Sarah Jane.

That’s a pretty cool trivia at the end, so it would seem people knew who the doctor would be before they became the doctor. And so in an effort to win some fans back they did this. Okay it makes more sense now. I do like the episode in general though.

Have you seen the ‘ fan girl’ discourse online? There’s still a good chunk of young fans that sexualize Capaldi and Clara’s relationship still, more than River and him, which is a bit concerning.
