donna and the doctor's mimed conversation is hands down one of the funniest things in doctor who. i Love this doctor and companion combo, and they have some of both the best comedic moments And the best emotional ones. season 4 is 10/10
I couldn't stand her for a while. I couldn't get beyond what felt like a shouty comedy character from her sketch show (which is pretty much what she was in Runaway Bride) By Turn Left I was fully on board though (one of my all time favs and she was fantastic in that). And on my first rewatch she became one of my favourite companions.
@@BritanyBinges Donna was kind of annoying in the christmas special and series 4 was able to make her my number 1 companion - and then the end... That makes me cry every time, saddest goodbye to a companion ever. 😊 And yes, the specials are very good, "Waters of Mars" is one of the best Tennant-epsiodes overall. At least in my opinion. :)
originally Howard Attfield reprised his role as Geoff Noble from run away bride sadly he passed away before he had finish filming for this episode. so they gave his role in the storyline to Bernard Cribbins as Donnas grandfather having enjoyed his cameo in voyage of the damed.
@9:20 - "Don't you ever change?" - In Tenant's first episode we saw the Tardis' closet, when he was choosing this outfit. It stands to reason there is also a laundry.
Assuming you mean from Silence in the Library through to Journey's End, I would mostly agree with you. One of my all-time favorite stories is in that group of episodes, but there's also a fan favorite that I wasn't crazy about in there as well. So, a high and a low. lol
Oh, dear. From that comment, I’m a little sad that it might be Midnight. Because it’s so different from almost every other episode. It’s one I liked but didn’t love to start with. But after multiple viewings, it’s now top 3 of all time for me. However, I can see someone watching it the first time being thrown off by it’s different nature. Still makes me sad when people don’t like it, though .😢
I guess the worst thing about the Adipose was the lack of consent since people wanted to loose weight but didn't consent to their fat being formed into little fat babies but apart from that, the plan would have been fine if it went according to plan. It is illegal by intergalactic law and we saw that there is a risk for it to kill people, but the Adipose themselves are not evil. But they sold a lot of merch from those little cute fat aliens. I have a plushie of one and I used to have a stressball (until it exploded). People liked them.
I think it was interesting they brought in the real world issue with the bees disappearing as colony collapse disorder was sort of breaking news around the time this episode aired.
as much as i enjoy some romantic tension (i'm a hopeless romantic at heart, sorry) the Doctor and Donna's relationship has a very special place in my heart. I love when the Doctor has someone he can just be buddies with.
Sarah Lancashire who plays Miss Foster is one of our best actresses, she’s amazing, sensational in everything she’s in. She doesn’t get much of a chance to shine here but in things like happy valley and last tango in Halifax she’s extraordinary, she’s one of those actors who wins all of the awards 👏🏻
Originally Catherine Tate wasnt gonna come back & Penny would've been the S4 companion and would have been a new love interest for Doctor, but Catherine Tate had a blast doing The Runaway Bride, & wanted to return (so they decided to build on Donna & have them be mates rather than reinvent the 'in love with the Doctor wheel' with Penny). However by the time production on S4 began, The Runaway Bride aired and Catherine Tate was told people found Donna annoying, so she did S4, thinking people would hate her, only to receive overwhelmingly positive responses + being considered (even now in 2023) the best of the Companions of Newwho & by some, Doctor Who as a whole.
I love how you always tear up at any reference to Rose... because, same! Your love for her character makes me happy; I think your emotional reactions to all things Rose take me back to when I first watched these episodes as a child 🥰 Excited to watch you experiencing series 4 - I feel like you have already developed a great understanding of the Doctor's character and I appreciate your thoughtful commentary ❤️
The amazing thing about Rose's appearance in this is that the BBC managed to keep it as a surprise. None of us knew it was coming. Given how often they outright spoiled things that ought to have been surprises in later seasons, it was a rare treat.
Donna (Catherine Tate) players her part so well, both as a companion & an actor that it makes this one of my favorite seasons, especially due to Donna's relationship with the Doctor (I feel he needs more companions like her). I was amazed to find out that the scene where they first see each other & "Talk" across the room was mostly improvised by Catharine which resulted in the delightful "Confused" look David had. Really looking forward to your reaction to the next one for several reasons (which I will not talk about here due to 'Spoilers") but it does perfectly set up their adventures to come and moves Donna right up the companion list for me.
Donna is my favorite companion, so I'm glad she's back. She has such a good friendship with the doctor. Also, this means we are getting close to my favorite episode.
One thing i always think about with this episode is would anything bad have happened if the doctor didn't get involved? Was the plan not to just get a few Adipose from a few million people and the only consequence is they lose some weight? But since the Doctor got involved she accelerated the plan with only a few thousand people converting their whole body.
Right?! IIRC, I think I talked in the reaction about how it honestly didn't seem like it was such a terrible thing. I mean, the people did want to lose weight and it wasn't hurting them. So, why not?
At the time this episode aired, the bees actually were disappearing in real life (due to a bee epidemic called colony collapse disorder) and there was concern it would lead to a disaster for agriculture. I haven't heard anything about it lately, so either the media lost interest or the problem went away.
Here in Australia there's been a lot of recent media coverage about Varoa Mite, which affects honey bee populations. It's one of the known causes of colony collapse disorder, so in some areas they've had to destroy hives to prevent the spread. It's an ongoing situation here, but hopefully we get it under control. We had a bad fruitfly situation not long ago and through monitoring and restrictions we were able to get it under control within a few months.
Thanks for a great reaction to a very nice, funny and sweet series opener. Donna really redeem herself during these episodes. And old Wilfred up at the hill, watching the stars. A very fine and warm grandfather. 🌞
Oh wow. I never even noticed that, the picture frames empty at around 4:20. Maybe the owner got rid of old pictures of herself since she's losing so much weight she didn't want pictures of herself looking fat anymore on her walls. Then again most of the picture frames are posted in an askew way so it could just be a design choice.
And we're here woo! For me, this series opener is second only to Rose! If I had to rank S1-4 Openings, it would be: Rose, Partners in Crime, Smith and Jones, and New Earth. It has everything that makes Doctor Who great: camp, cartoonish humour; an easy to digest and follow plotline; and integrates with real life really well. Obviously diet culture hasn't gone away, but at the time, I remember it being a LOT more prevalent, and so to have an episode that interacts with that, that doesn't cheapen those would maybe take those kinds of pills in real life, I think is brilliant!
My fav companion will always be rose but Donna comes close. I wanted a friend for him that would allow him to miss, and grieve without jealousy. Someone to balance him out. I was so excited for your reaction to this. ❤❤ Also ROSEEEEEEEEEEEE :D :D :D She's sad because she thought she'd find the doctor where all that chaos was happening but didn't see him.
There is a million of clients and we only saw her take one from each client because she didn't want more than that. And then the Doctor just stopped the process, so she didn't get the number to a million of Adipose.
'It was a bit on the ridiculous side' ... Have you seen Doctor Who before? LOL Im really glad I found someone to watch through with again. Again. Allonsy!
@@BritanyBinges What astounds me is the way Who can, quite lavishly, use the most ridiculous characters and aliens, and still tell an incredible story, often involving hope and love. I have literally been watching and impatiently waiting and waiting and waiting for the release of your reaction to this episode on pins and needles. So excited since the Runaway Bride. Thinking the whole time “No one spoil her, no one spoil her, PLEASE no one spoil this for her!” Opening credit comes up: Oh, and yes, I know Catherine Tate is in this. … … Well, there’s all the air out of my tires after months of waiting. 🙁
I find it interesting that I think The Runaway Bride and that first appearance of landed better with UK audiences than US. Now I'm sure on both sides there were people it did and didn't work for both times, but despite the fact that The Runaway Bride was very well received overall and the news that Donna was coming back for series 4 caused a lot of excitement at the time a lot of reaction videos I see from Americans are really off put by Donna and at first aren't thrilled by her return. However maybe it's not a regional thing maybe it's more of a time thing. It's worth pointing out back then Catherine Tate was doing very well back in the UK and had her own successful series, a British audience in 2006 would have been going into it maybe more prepared and really taking it for the comedy. I dunno I just find it interesting, because they didn't bring her back despite it not working, they brought her back because it did. Elaboration on the bringing her back. Russell was actually trying to write a new companion, but it kept ending up like Donna and he couldn't stop thinking about how good a whole series of David and Catherine would be, but basically acknowledged with how busy she was at the time that no it wouldn't be possible and he didn't even know if she'd be up for it. However she ultimately had a meeting with the BBC about what she'd like to do in future collaborations, but spent the whole meeting basically talking about how much she loved working on the Doctor Who Christmas special. That was nice for Russell to know she enjoyed it, but he was still pessimistic about her actually being available, but Julie Gardner the producer felt it was worth at least talking to her about it so they met up and basically according to Julie, after she told Catherine she basically started planning her move to Cardiff so she could do it. Fun Fact Penny Carter was the name of that not Donna, but kind of Donna companion and the name got reused for the journalist who gets tied to the chair. Also David and Catherine just adore each other they're really good friends and I feel that just shines through. Apologies for writing way too much.
None of the miming scene was scripted, only that it happened both David Tennant and Catherine Tate had to ad-lib the whole thing, and supposedly did the version we see as the one and only take.
While much of The Doctor/Donna miming scene was scripted, the bit where after The Doctor miming, "What for?" as ad-libbed by Catherine Tate on the day of shooting, so I'm not sure there are many people who really understood exactly what she was trying to say. I don't know if you cut this comment, but Wilf was also in The Voyage of the Damned as the newspaper seller determined to support the Queen while the rest of London evacuated. Finally, during their time working together, David Tennant and Bernard Cribbins (Wilf) got so close that Tennant and his wife named one of their sons Wilf in his honour. Coincidentally, Tennant's wife if actress Georgia Moffet, who is the daughter of the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison.
I like Donna and the friends companions because I think the age difference between Rose, Martha and the Doctor was a bit odd with him being 900 I like Sarah Jane smith also

Just found your channel and your who reactions!!! I watched through all the episodes over the past 2 days! When are you planning on uploading the next episode?
First couple of episodes of series 4 is a bit meh but the from the middle to the end of the series is some of the beet episode’s of doctor who and rose coming back was amazing
I think this season and season 9 might be my favorites as far as consistently good episodes throughout the entirety of the season. I don't think there was an episode I could say I truly disliked in seasons 4 or 9 (maybe just episodes I liked a bit more than others).
Is this your last video doing doctor who? I subscribed to your patreon specifically for series 4 but couldn’t find any past this one with the video also on the screen( can’t do watch along ones unfortunately) 💔
It's not my last video, but it is my latest one. The full reactions (the watch along ones) are what's so far ahead on Patreon. This shortened version was just released today, so it's the most current one. The tier descriptions explain what's included in each tier.
Yeah, like there isn't anywhere else for them to hide in that entire building? Also, they didn't hear each move when they were supposed to be the only in there? lol
Haha! Fairly often. It's wild that it from me thinking, "Hmm, maybe I could try reacting to the first episode of Doctor Who and see if that goes anywhere," to Doctor Who now taking up a considerable chunk of my time each week. lol It's been an awesome journey, though! :)
WHY ARE YOU YELLING? I don't skip it. These are shortened versions of the full reaction to the entire episode. Things are cut in order to not violate copyright laws.
I know I'm in the minority, but I'm still no fan of Donna. Not denying there are some excellent episodes this season, but for me, season 5 is better overall.
Wilf looking through the telescope while a spaceship flies behind him is hilarious.
Every amateur astronomer across the globe felt that moment. Lolol
I grabbed a screen shot to meme and share across all astro forums.
Sorry, but the internet has ruined me and when I read "wilf" I lost it.

Yep. Brilliantly funny scene, especially when you find out that Catherine got to improvise parts of the miming to suit her style.
The season where they proved many of us wrong about Donna
They certainly proved me wrong. :)

Underneath Donnas's comedic bossiness was a 1st class empath.

I don't think I knew there were animated specials. 🤔
yeah there was one with Martha during her "One trip" in season 3 which is why she is wearing the red jacket and the other that was after The Waters of Mars @@BritanyBinges
The thumbnail looked more like "Britany Cringes".
This season is so good. so good. SO GOOD. you will enjoy it :D
Just found your channel and your who reactions!!! I watched through all the episodes over the past 2 days! When are you planning on uploading the next episode?
So glad you've found the reactions! The next one will be published this coming Friday.
Series 4, lets GOOOOOOOOOO!
First couple of episodes of series 4 is a bit meh but the from the middle to the end of the series is some of the beet episode’s of doctor who and rose coming back was amazing
Ah yeah the rose thing that will all make sense soon that male companion we get soon but you have wait a while
I think this season and season 9 might be my favorites as far as consistently good episodes throughout the entirety of the season. I don't think there was an episode I could say I truly disliked in seasons 4 or 9 (maybe just episodes I liked a bit more than others).
Yes, Martha was cool.
THANKS for this!!!! So by now you've seen this story end. Isn't this beginning (after the "Bride" prologue) wonderful? 🕹🕹🕹
Yeah, I definitely like this episode better for Donna. I like to pretend the previous episode doesn't exist. lol

Ahhh Donna ❤❤❤❤
I never got why Penny and Donna sat on the toilet all day
Yeah, like there isn't anywhere else for them to hide in that entire building? Also, they didn't hear each move when they were supposed to be the only in there? lol
Do you ever stop and think about how this was all supposed to only be you reacting to 1x1 and now you're up to 11x1
Haha! Fairly often. It's wild that it from me thinking, "Hmm, maybe I could try reacting to the first episode of Doctor Who and see if that goes anywhere," to Doctor Who now taking up a considerable chunk of my time each week. lol It's been an awesome journey, though! :)
ADIPOSE!!! =D
WHY DO YOU SKIP THE INTRO!
WHY ARE YOU YELLING?
I don't skip it. These are shortened versions of the full reaction to the entire episode. Things are cut in order to not violate copyright laws.
@@BritanyBinges 😆 I'm not shouting
@@thelivingbarfpoo2363 Writing in all caps is the equivalant of shouting.
@@BritanyBinges 🤷♀️🤷♀️ NAH U KNOW
Catherine Tate will grow on you i think. she got better with the stories.
And she definitely does
I know I'm in the minority, but I'm still no fan of Donna. Not denying there are some excellent episodes this season, but for me, season 5 is better overall.
