“And you, woman of London… you’ve got something on your back!”
So, this episode asks one big question - what would happen if It’s a Wonderful Life and Doctor Who had a baby. It’s fantastic and a tour de force acting job by Catherine Tate. It’s also absolutely chilling with how DARK it gets and how the universe seems to be targeting not just The Doctor but anyone he was connected to. Really fantastic.
Unless you hate spiders. Then you’re in trouble.

A clever little bit of continuity in this episode, the scene of the Tank shooting down the Web star doesn't have the radio broadcast establishing that Mr Saxon ordered it shot down, because with the Doctor dead, Professor Yana never opened his pocket watch, and even if he did, he has no way of escaping the end of the universe.

And the Carrionites from Shakespeare Code, they were going to destroy Earth and would have if the Doctor wasn't there. But Earth is fine. So what happened? I'm watching you watch this, and seeing how depressing things are without the doctor, it's really a secondary point of this episode, the primary point is to establish that Donna is important, but secondly, it points out how much of a difference the doctor makes. We get that he saves the planet/universe or whatever in various stories, but seeing the actual results if he fails cements the importance of his actions (and the fact that the the people he had contact with, were the only ones that were able to stop the other stuff without him, is also significant)
It's a doctor light episode, but like most of them, the doctor is of course a major presence in them.

9:10 If it came in at orbital velocity it probably would. Given its a space ship it can probably handle re-entry so it would hit the planet with most of its mass intact. The OG titanic weighed over 50,000 tons coming in at orbital velocity, that's like 2*10^16 Jules. Thats more than a 1000 times the energy of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima and in the ballpark of the Tsar Bomb the most powerful nuclear device we ever made. Of course we don't know the exact weight or speed of the space titanic but it was probably enough to take out London and most of the surrounding area if it hit.

10:02 Think of it this way, almost a fifth of the UK's pop-ups lives in London, which also means something approximatiolng that much of its housing. And it sounds like most of southeastern England has been displaced, which is where the majority of their population is. America doesn't have that much of a population concentration, and 7 million people being forced to relocate at once would overwhelm us. Canada... I'm not as familiar with Canada's situation, but I suspect it's closer to Britain's as regards concentration. On the other hand, I suspect the US would be more willing to take on a bunch of displaced Canadians than France would be too take on a bunch of displaced Brits.
13:00 Nope, remember that he only got to earth because the Doctor and Martha found him at the end of the universe. Doctor was already dead before that happened in this timeline, and Martha for that matter. No one to wake the Master up. No way back in time if he woke up on his own.

I love the premise of this episode, but I just don't enjoy the episode as made. There's just something about the tone of it that's really grating to me, and unfortunately Billie Piper just doesn't feel like Rose (although she's closer to her by the end). Seems to be a fairly popular one with most fans, though.

    • @suntannedduck2388

Make sense they do heap a lot on. They want a conflict and to keep upping the stakes and they can too far at times.
But I think it makes sense of well if he doesn't save it who does. Torchwood, someone else. Events that just happen. And other changes happen.
The tone is dark while not being graphic of course for fair reasons as a family show. Or what events happen. I would say oh the doctor doesn't have to save everything but I mean hmm I guess in certain earth events many of them would turn out that way I guess..... Not sure.
I do agree Rose is a bit different but I guess because of time since Series 2 and 4 she changed due to what happens in her world, or it's been time seen acting for this role so it comes across different. But yeah by the end it is very Rose of before.
It kind of makes sense but yes is a bit odd.

This will come up as somewhat controversial this was my least favourite episode only because it didn't feature much of the Doctor in it there's alot of fans who don't mind it but for me personally i prefer it when the Doctor is there because it feels like I'm watching a different show when he's not but I understand Tennant wasn't available during filming it's one of those episodes I don't often look back on.
I wasn't the biggest Rose fan I was happy with how they ended with her in Series 2 I feel when they bring old companions back it kind of ruins their arc and impact i feel she was just there for the sake of fan service but that's just my opinion I'd rather they just left her as she was i mean i liked Rose for awhile but i felt she had a much better chemistry with Christopher's Doctor than with David's because their wasn't this whole romantic relationship between those two which i hated, it was more of an uncle and niece relationship, Billie Piper later admitted she had actually forgotten how to play Rose and it kind of shows here because she's not the same Rose we knew her when she was a regular companion she felt like an entirely different character almost.
The beetle on Donna's back is a callback to a Classic Who story which I won't name incase you plan on watching this particular classic story and one of my favourites.

Ok, there is one thing that's always infuriated me, and I know, I'm probably VERY alone with this issue. But maybe someone could help me finally clear this up once and for all:
14:01 This is the way, I've always known how to salute someone...
Why does Wilf ALWAYS salute differently? 😡😡😫😫
It looks SO DUMB with the palm forwards. The other person is SHOWING you, how to do it. It's like a response. So, why can't he just salute back normally? Equally? What the heck is going on there?
    😅
Excuse me for maybe being ignorant or for sucking at history. Sometimes I'm ocd with these things. But because Wilf ALWAYS did this, it started to infuriate me at some point.....

Such a good episode. No idea there was Rose audio dramas or books or so. But comments say so. Make sense. Not seen Sarah Jane Adventures so interesting that bit. A turn of events indeed. A bit too much of wrongs but it makes a point even if heaped on. I don't remember what the bees point was a I remember the stars and other details for some reason. The next two episodes work to continue this. But yep Rose jumping dimensions just like Series 2 hmm how does she do that this time compared to the other jumping devices. I literally don't remember.
Oh right Chan tho huh. Just like Martha in Series 2 then companion status. They do reuse the actors which makes sense but the makeup and role changes. Good spotting didn't realise.
Ah Torchwood how S1&2 were good, 3 was garbage for 5-6 episodes I wanted to skip it but watched it all to witness and complete how bad it was, and 4 I stopped watching I was so bored of it and not enjoying the writing or characters.

I disagree. They mentioned multiple SJA characters in this that I wouldn't have had a clue who they were otherwise. I mean, Maria and Clyde were just a quick reference so that wouldn't have been a huge deal to not get the reference (although it's more enjoyable that I did), but the Trickster is literally the one responsible for the entire episode. I would've been lost and confused at the end and it would've definitely made me like the episode a little less. And that's not even going into the tie-ins in the finale story.
