Almost 16 years later and this 2 parter still hits you in the gut hard
Editing it for these two videos was my first time seeing it after watching the rest of her journey and I held out until she started talking about their last "night" together. I had to take a break from editing because I couldn't see my computer screen anymore. lol
"When the wind stands fair..." the call back to this line later. The call back to so many things @@BritanyBinges 😭
Coming back to this episode after watching River’s entire arc is an emotional rollercoaster. Moffat really thought of every detail.
The first time he meets her is the last time she ever sees him. If that isn’t cry worthy I don’t know what is.
Spoiler:
Since the lady is far into future seasons, have you watched Name of the Doctor?
@@zvimur oh yes, I’m all caught up. But I’m just talking about this episode, not things to come.
The brilliant, massive brain of Steven Moffat. 😅
I really miss him.
I'm such a fanboy....
I couldn’t agree more. After everything now we’ve gone through with River Song, for us who have actually watched all of the seasons up to the present day, it makes this first showing of her all the more powerful, sad and wonderful.
DONNA: What about you? Are you all right?
DOCTOR: I'm always all right.
DONNA: Is "all right" special Time Lord code for really not all right at all?
DOCTOR: Why?
DONNA: Because I'm all right, too.
My favorite Doctor/ Donna moment ever.
Doctor/Donna is a whole other thing….
What's brilliant is how this story subverts what we've learned about the visual language of storytelling. Over our life we've learned that when we cut from scene to scene, we "insert" in our mind the story that happened between those cuts. But this story puts us off balance by having an environment where those cuts are *literal* jumps from moment to moment. Just wonderful explorations of those things we've learned to take for granted.
my favorite line "You're in the biggest library in the Universe.... LOOK ME UP"
It's fine here, but with hindsight it's hard to not see it for the irritating Moffatism it'll become. He always (well, a bit less with Capaldi, but still) had a weird obsession with portraying the Doctor as a borderline god around whom everyhting else revolves, and frankly I don't think it did the show any favours.
@@ozzyp97
Spoilers
It comes back to bite him, Moffat deconstructs that on purpose.
@@chazo1367 Kinda, but the fact that Moffat figured that out a few seasons down the line doesn't retroactively fix the issues it caused for the writing of all the previous episodes.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate his era by any means. I just think there are fundamental issues with his way of running the show, he was much better as just a writer. Same goes for his other shows too, Sherlock is also way too preoccupied with how cool the main character is to the detriment of everything else.
I actually love this. The Doctor has saved the universe a trillion times and people absolutely should be in awe of him and terrified of him. He's thousands of years old and incredibly powerful. If that isn't a living god I don't know what is.
@@robvanriot He's been doing this sort of thing for a 1000 years and a bit, and the universe is a big place. It makes sense for *some* groups to be afraid of him, but others (like humanity at the start of New Who, for instance) are only vaguely aware of him. In this specific episode it's totally fine because the Vashta Nerada can literally read about it.
Even so it's mostly a writing thing, having the main character repeatedly turn out to be the most important person ever is just not very interesting compared to the tragic, mysterious hero character RTD was mostly going for. And once again, this is a common Moffat trope at this point. It didn't ruin his DW run thankfully, but I think Sherlock is pretty universally understood to not be very good.
Steven Moffat is a sick sick man for writing this rollercoaster of an emotional episode
Yeah. He does that a lot. Look at The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and Blink.
And he actually made almost all of it make sense…years later.
We all visited the events River mentioned from her diary; still waiting on Jim the fish
Maybe... but the idea of it is brilliant!
“I saw the Doctor!”
“Yes, Donna. You did. And then you forgot.”
Damn that’s some good foreshadowing.
OMG I never actually thought about that, you're so right!
Damn it.😞
The speech he gives to the shadows where he’s threatening them really does remind me of what was to come with Matt Smith, a nice glimpse of the Doctor River was talking about
This two parter is probably one of my faves in the series
Why? David Tenant's doctor was always ruthless and threatening in other episodes too, it has nothing to do with Matt smith's, he has said something similar to people like Harriet Jones. (I know which episode you are talking about for Matt Smith).
@@harish123az True, but Eleven truly weaponizes the Doctor's reputation in a way that wasn't really done before. The ''Look me up'' from Ten was kind of a precursor to that.
As happy as it is to see those 4022 people restored, there is still a bitterness to it.
They've been stuck in the computer for 100 years. Everyone they ever knew or loved is probably dead.
Oh, I didn't even think about that! Wow, that does make it extra bittersweet. :(
While true, what options did CAL have? They would be eaten by Vashta Nerada, so being saved is better than being dead/
And I'll bet every single one of them will, at some point in their new lives, wish they had access to a time machine, before remembering that such as thing is just wishful thinking...
Great reaction- chills when he says "you said my name"
funny thing is in the scene she whispers in his ear she just thought of a tough girls name so he would have that genuine what the heck off script moment lmao
@@verloser did not know that. Thanks ha
Same here the first time around.
I was lucky enough to meet Alex Kingston (River Song) and I will say, she's quite genuinely the coolest.
Same. Exactly.
I think the complexity of this story helps give it more value in a rewatch than some episodes, especially after watching what happens later
I completey agree!
Over a decade later, this is still one of the most impactful episodes -- Emotionally it hits hard, and in terms of Sci-Fi and linear Storytelling, it's pretty much textbook perfect as well. It's genuinely amazing! It also acted as a great example of how excellent Composer Murray Gold's work on the show can be!
25:34, Yes, it's a causality loop. Like in Time Crash minisode, Tennant knows how to save the situation, because as Davison he saw Tennant do it. This is far from last time this occurs.
@@tvguy61 all things considered, she was content to die, to maintain causality.
Reminds me of in Prisoner of Azkaban where Harry knew he’d be able to cast the Patronus because he’d seen his past self do it, but he thought he was his dad.
@@loopylinguist7716 a bit. What always wrecked my mind was: Did evening Dumbledore know about the night events??
I think Moffat once said that Doctor Who is the sort of show that gobbles up whole Hollywood movie ideas in a story, but this one has at least three of those, the Vashta Nerada, the computer world, a time traveller meeting someone important from their future, etc. I love just how narratively dense it is, and it's all carried off (imo), a proper masterclass.
The whole River Song Story Arc is so amazing, and it all started, well episode wise , here.
I completely agree that it's amazing!
Disagree. although she maybe had a good introduction (even though I didn't like her "The real Doctor" attitude, as if everything he was before her doesn't matter) but they really dropped the ball with writing her character and her relationship with Doctor
River Song is in the biggest Computer in the biggest library in the Universe. like CAL, she can journey into any book for eternity.... if the Doctor is written in a book, she go check out that book and submerse herself in that world/book...... for all of eternity....
The Doctor gave her an eternity or until the planet dies or the computer dies..... to go on any adventure she desires as long as it was written in a book....
Hmm... she's more than that. She can interact.....
@@zvimur cool
This two parter ALWAYS makes me cry, no matter how many times I see it.
there needs to be massive credit given to catherine tate and the incredibly tragic ordeal donna goes through in this episode and how beautifully she does it
As people have said here River Song’s timeline is travelling the opposite direction to the Doctor’s. She knew that she would die when she met the Doctor and he didn’t know who she was, so she knew she had to die.
Not opposite, just out of order. If it was the first time she met him would be his last. Its all wibbly wobbly, timey wimey.
Yeah. A lot of it is just going in opposite directions, but it's not exact. Though regardless the part about her knowing she'd likely die the day he looks at her and doesn't know her is true@@crossfusion1233
Donna: "I saw the Doctor!"
Doctor Moon: "Yes, Donna, you did. And then, you forgot!"
I know you are much further along on Patreon, but I am SO EXCITED to see you now reacting to the River Song era!!!
I'm excited to revisit it all knowing what I know now. :)
@@BritanyBinges Although I forget...are you onto the 11th Doctor, yet?
@@Mark_E_M I just wrapped up series 13 this week, so I'm actually approaching the end of the 13th Doctor.
@@BritanyBinges 11 will FOREVER be my favorite Doctor!
Technically he made a copy of her rather than truly saving her as the digital version of River Song was made using her data ghost rather than her mind being transferred. I suppose the irl point of it was to try to make the ending a little less sad and in-show in my opinion it was more to help the Doctor than it was River as I’m sure it helped him feel a little less sad, less guilty, etc.
He wasn't guilty though, he wanted to die himself
Alex Kingston was probably best known to North American audiences for her years on ER.
Oh, I didn't know she was in ER. I've never seen it.
Thanks, Britany! ⏳ The 'River Song' subplot gets soooooo good over the years.
Agreed! :)
@@BritanyBinges 🥂
I always get goosebumps when the music plays as he runs his way to save River
This two-parter has a ton of feels. It also gave us "My Doctor" "Spoilers" and River Song.
There is going to be point where you will want (need) to re-watch this and I'd love to see you come back and re-react to it here as it really hits different.
This is legit my favorite two parter that isn't a finale two parter. So good. SO GOOOOOOD
Alex Kingston (River Song) was Dr. Corday in ER. I havenloved her acting since then!!! It seems like a million years ago😮
I've actually never seen a single episode of ER. 😬
In 'Silince in the Library' I was: who are you River Song? What are you doing with 'my' Doctor? I don't want some unknown person stealing him away! In this episode, she was starting to get to me - in a good way - but it wasn't until later and after * spoilers * she became one of my favorites, River, Donna and Rory.
And from now on, the word *spoilers* will from now on, heard in Rivers voice and it will have a deeper meaning. I love what this show gives us, over and over, those little gems we use in real life and give it a deeper meaning.
As ever, another great reaction from you, thank you
I just want to say thank you for these reactions. I live for these every week. I have watched the New Doctor Who since they came out back in 2005-2006 when they used to just show up on the TV every now and then. David Tennant was my first Doctor and I vividly remember Rise of the Cybermen 2 parter and this 2 parter growing up scaring the crap out of me. Then in 2007-2009 ALL seasons (until Matt Smith because he didn’t exist yet) was on Netflix and I watch them all from Christopher Eccelston and I am hooked for life. Since then, every year I rewatch the entire series (New Who only). (I tried to get into the original series, but have had a hard time, but I have researched about every single Doctor and I have a general idea about what happens to each of them in their own times). I was just starting to rewatch it again for 2023 year and came upon one of your reactions to it, and then I stopped watching alone and started watching your reactions per episode so now it feels like I’m watching it with a friend. Thank you for being that “friend” to watch with this year. I wish you released multiple episodes on RUclips in a week lol because they’re just so good!
Thank you SO much for this amazing comment and your incredibly kind words. I 'm so glad you're enjoying the reactions, and I'm so, so glad it feels like you're watching it with a friend. That's exactly what I wanted this channel, and my videos, to feel like when I decided I was going to start doing reactions.
Gotta love all the bootstrap paradoxes (x knowing they can do/will do y cause they saw them do y already, meaning y never happened for the first time).
Like at 24:10 all the future Doctor did to save River was hiding the neural relay with her (River's) conscioness in Rivers Sonic, since Tennant's Doctor discovered it & used it to physically save River to the Hard drive give her the second life.
And a more immediate Bootstrap Paradox being the Doctor snapping the doors open & closed at 25:30 & by proxy the future Doctor also doing so because River said he was able to at 12:40 , as she saw the future Doctor do it.
But yeah, River being without her Doctor was a drawback of the digital heaven. In one version of this, Dr.Moon was River's Future Doctor (like 45th Doctor so would have been way off in 2008, technically still way off in 2024), who perma dies in battle and River saved him to the library, becoming Doctor Moon, so River would've been with her Doctor again (but this never happened and is unlikely to happen in future).
@@tvguy61 meant it as in Y has always happened beforehand & that occurrence ends up inspiring it happening, in future & as a result technically has no origin point (River's Sonic had a neural relay because the Tennant Doctor used the neural relay to save her & then future Doctor adds the neural relay to the sonic-so where did the idea to add the neural relay come from), more than anything.
All of your concerns are addressed... eventually.
Donna: I saw the Doctor
Dr Moon: Yes you did. And then you forgot
Damn you Moffat!
Spoilers for anyone who hasn't watched up to series 6 of Doctor Who:
When this episode released in 2008 we had no idea if we would ever see River Song again. Obviously we know that she is someone important to the Doctor but we don't know how long in the Doctor's future she is so we could only hope. It wasn't until 2010 until we saw her again. But this episode gained a lot of speculation into who she is.
Don't spoil things...
@@TheMess1998 She has seen up to Season 13. Read the description.
@@TheZebbga It may be that this reactor has seen thru some point in the future.
But sometimes, people who have NOT seen all the way into the future episodes will be watching a reaction such as this one. So by posting spoilers, you are spoiling it for them.
@@dondumitru7093 Fair enough, I will add a spoiler warning.
@TheZebbga I coudn't imagine waiting that long! I'm far too impatient for that. (I mean, "binges" is in my channel name for a reason. lol)
Banger episode. And with all Smith’s era to come, what groundwork to build on!
Few episodes in Doctor Who move the ball like this two-parter does.
"You and me, one last run!"
Kills me every time.
It hits a lot harder now having seen all of River's journey. :(
yeah you should have passed on the makup for this one... i ugly cry EVERY TIME
This episode is so emotionally devastating, I rarely even rewatch it. But it is a perfect 10/10 episode! 😙👌
Two great lines:
"You just killed someone I liked, that is not a safe place to stand!"
"I'm always alright."
The actress who plays River Song is best known (I believe) for her run on the show "ER". But more recently she was part of a phenomenal limited series called "A Discovery of Witches." It's only 3 seaons total of about 8-10 episodes each season. It takes the witches, vampires, and demons ideas in a unique way. She was good in that as well.
1:04 she’s also got a bad wolf painting in her house. Blonde lady and a wolf below it
I’ve just found your channel recently and I’m loving your reactions. It’s a rollercoaster of a ride 😂😭🩷
I'm so glad you're loving the reactions!!!
When Riversong whispers in the Doctor’s ear she told him his biggest secret, his real name! Thus she let him know that he can trust her implicitly.
The Dr River saga is just brilliant story writing. she is from his future so you will see her. sad that the 1st time he sees her is her last time with him
Great reaction video as always. Moffats first TV show was a kids TV show called Press Gang and there was one episode that does two lovers who pass in the nights just like Donna and Lee here and it’s heartbreaking
I hope no one had spoiled you about River when you had this on patreon.
I remember seeing this for the first time back in 2009(?) and thinking about the Doctor from the future and what he was like. In hindsight, I think the mental image I had was very similar to Capaldi (ironically).
I do find the library plot a bit scrambled. It's taken me several rewatches over 15 years for the CAL part of the story to finally stick... and that was just recently because of my current rewatch.
She was not spoiled 🙂
You are right to re-watch it. I would suggest, After you finish watching all Peter Capaldi's doctor, go back and watch forest of the dead. It is amazing the difference this episode is after you complete the story arc, especially emotionally.
Even seeing the episode she signs up to the archaeology program as well. Then these episodes back. But yes his doctor seasons with River for sure and all the signs.
I actually seen through the end of series 13 over on Patreon. Editing this video was my first time rewatching this story. It definitely got to me more this time around. :(
A brilliant reaction to an amazing two parter. A very sad but sweet episode. Such an emotional roller coaster. 🙏
Pointless trivia: The actress playing Miss Evangelista was briefly married to Elon Musk.
“Hush now… spoilers.”
One of my favorite Doctor Who moments of all time and guess what? Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead has gone back on top of my multiparters. It’s just so strong an introduction for River, The Doctor is amazing and Donna’s mini-arc is good too.
Have you ever heard of a shibboleth? It’s known mostly from the Bible as like a password as it can be read, but not pronounced correctly unless you heard it spoken. Therefore, a shibboleth is something to be used in common vernacular but has a different meaning for those in the know, like a fandom. I humbly submit “Spoilers” is a shibboleth for Whovians. You hear it and you just know they are in the club, especially if a bit more weight is given to the second “Spoil-ERS” the way Alex Kingston does.
Anyway, suffice to say, without spoiling, The Doctor’s story is going to be different as a River now runs through it. And you just never know when. And it’s so worth it.
“Sleep well, everyone.”
Also the music in this was insane
This is such a fabulous episode. And gets better on rewatch.
I completely agree... with both things you said. :)
This double always makes me cry, esp the end. Its one of the best eps of all time.
This is among the very best of New Who. And the next episode counts among those, too.
It is such a joy to watch you experience these moments and for us to be giddy with excitement knowing already what is to come, and watching you put it all together the same as we did when we first watched. You let us experience it for the first time all over again ❤ “spoilers”
Thank you so much for this wonderful comment! That's exactly how I feel when I watch reactions for my favorite shows. :)
the way i personally have always viewed the Doctor (or just my personal headcanon, however u wanna call it) is panromantic a-sepc who tried really hard not to fall in love because he knows he'll eventually end up outliving them or lose them in some way, but even then he gets attached to people very easily (both romantically and platonically) no matter how hard he tries not to. it's the curse of the Doctor
Not sure where you are on Patreon at the moment, but this episode is perfect to rewatch after you’ve watched River’s final episode. You’ll know it when you see it. Although chronologically, it’s that episode, this two-parter, and then Name of the Doctor.
I can say this because you are already in season 13 (but SPOILERS to everyone else who doesn't know River's journey):
I really think that the Doctor loved River... in the best way it's possible for him. Maybe it's not excatly the same way as humans, but he really did love and care for her. There are many evidence of that through out the series.
I mean yes, of course, at first the Doctor did try to stay away from her and avoid her at any cost.... obviosly it didn't work out. The Big Finish audio series of the 10th Doctor and River's adventures is really interesting to listen to. It really shows how much the Doctor didn't want to get involved with the whole story with River... but at the same time he was really curious about her.
I think River knowing the Doctor's name is a paradox - he only ends up telling her because she needs to know.
You are going to cry but not for the reasons you thought. 4:14 I find it funny that the Doctor is often accused of not having enough emotion/empathy but as River Song said he needs to be detached so that he can think with his head & not with his heart, we know he has one but it has seen more pain than any person could take. 5:00 the way Dr. Who is going now I fear that yes one day we will find out which will REALLY, REALLY annoy (can't use the words I would like to) me & be the last broken straw of cannon.
Spoilers Below; Only a few spoilers, Read at your risk
So glad that they made River Song a recurring character & not the one off character she was first written as because she is one of the best characters in the show & as you said Alex Kingston absolutely nailed her part & sold her character so well that you could see the connection they have/had/will have (?).
Catherine Tate and Alex Kingston in the same "Doctor Who" story with David Tennant. I have no words.....other than, of course, THANKS for this!!!
As for me, River's life is pure suffering. Living backwards and die when you meet - how can anyone do that?
I remember when Alex Kingston was on the TV show E.R. I instantly fell in love with her, so havijg her show up in Doctor Who was the best thing to happen for me
These last two episodes are among my favorite David Tennant episodes, for the fact that they're the first appearance of River Song. You already know what's ahead. Nothing against Tennant but, in my opinion, season five is when the series gets really good. Matt Smith is my favorite Doctor.
Now i cant wait for you to see how river song came to be
I'm excited to revisit her journey as I edit these videos. :)
Alex Kingston(River Song), a brilliant actor.
Completely agree! Especially since I realized later that she's actually in an episode or two of Gilmore Girls and her character is a nightmare! lol
yeah i always thought this was a horrible ending. it's like... we already had the tragedy of her dying, it's just a twist for the sake of it. and i do like that it was a positive twist, which is pretty unusual and quite fun as a concept, but... WERE they her friends? i thought they just did a job together. And if we assume she was in love with the Doctor, she now "lives" for eternity without him. And she was a professor of archaeology, so she was smart and explored space and got her hands dirty. Now she reads books and looks after digital kids. Oh well, it's not that serious, it's a fantastic couple of episodes all the same
Honestly, I agree. If Moffat wanted River to have her perfect life, give her a digital version of the Doctor. To be fair, River did want her and the Doctor to have children but knew the Doctor wouldn't, so never brought it up. But the idea of her getting that dream, her and the Doctor travelling with their children would have been the perfect ending for her.
My guess is they just couldn't go round giving companions even more copies of the Doctor, not without it being either a season finale or a really huge plot point.
But it does seem strangely open ended, as deaths go - download her data into an android, perhaps? regrow a body? that is, if you even need to, since CAL was converting body to data and back again on a huge scale.
I have to view it as just a placeholder, a bit of a fun escape clause in case the rest of her story didn't satisfy the audience. It's a perfect ending for *someone,* just not the River Song who came to be.
@@storageheater It's a great ending. But as we get to know River, there isn't a single mention that this is the life she wanted. If throughout her arc it was mentioned that she wanted to have a family, then fair. But even then, she would've wanted to have that with the Doctor. Also, her lifestyle raises a question. She's half Time Lord and has a longer lifespan than humans, by the time of her death she is over 300 years old. So does she still age slower in the library computer and will she have to watch her team and her children die? Do they age at all in there? I get the the 10th Doctor wouldn't know all that, but the 12th Doctor would and would've taken it into account, right? And who tf is the father of her kids? Or did they just appear? I know there are headcanons that CAL did actually create a version of the Doctor and he is the father. It's a good ending, but not River.
Loving the reactions!
So glad you're loving them! :)
I look forward to this every week ❤
I'm so glad!!
