Reminds me of a couple Twilight Zone episodes related to the Red Scare. Paranoia during the Cold War inspired stories like this. I wonder was there anything comparable at the time that inspired this. Like the war on terror or something else at the time.

Actually, I had the same feeling when I saw this ep for the first time but as I watched it several times after I started to appreciate it so much more. If feels like a theatre performance, so much emphasis on words and characters. Very powerful episode, in my opinion.
The crazy thing about this episode is, YOU CAN SEE THE MONSTER. If you pay close attention to one of the rock platforms when they open the front view you can see a shadow figure jump down from the platform…
Britany. This is one of my favourite Doctor Who episodes. The script, the dialogue and the acting are superb. It’s like a stage play they way it is filmed in that one claustrophobic scene. And the clever timing of the acting. I go back to this episode a lot because it is so good.
One of the best episodes, RTD really pushes the Doctor to the brink here. Great performances all round, Lesley Sharp with one of the best guest outings ever.
This is an excellent representation of cosmic horror. You never really understand what the threat is. It’s plays on the fear of the unknown, and the unknown is more frightening than any monster design you could imagine. It’s also a great exploration into different types of characters who each have their own responses to unknown threats. Mob mentality is a real phenomenon and even in a small group it can take hold in times of great stress and fear.
I think the fact this very much a bottle episode is why some people don't chime with it. While it is inconsequential to the overarching mystery of Season 4, it could be deemed as filler. However, it's deeper than that. As a treatise on humanity's inhumanity to humanity, it's powerful stuff, and an episode that genuinely terrified my daughter, who was 10 at the time. It's also interesting to note that the amount of dialogue is unusual to you, as a lot of British television uses dialogue more readily than action set-pieces, as seems to be more common on American TV. Personally, I think this is a strong episode with a great cast (Lesley Sharp, who plays Sky, was something of an RTD regular, appearing in both Bob and Rose and The Second Coming, both written by Mr Davies himself). Lindsay Coulson, who plays Jethro's mum, was instantly recognisable to the majority of UK viewers as Carole Jackson from EastEnders, a role she still plays to this day (I think). Of course, there's also David 'Son-of-Patrick' Troughton as Professor Hobbes. In short, this is a highlight of Season 4 for a lot of people, and it's unfortunate that it didn't appeal to you. Especially as the unknowability of the entity is kind of the point of it, in a way.
I adore Midnight. As a place, a concept, and an episode. It's mysterious, fascinating, and terrifying. The fact we never figure out what the hell is going on with this... THING. We never figure out what it is, the Doctor doesn't either. It reminds me of something The Doctor said in his second incarnation. "There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things."

This episode is such a masterclass in characterisation. You feel like you know these characters’ life stories, goals, morals, personalities etc from such a tiny story. This is one of my favourite episodes. The psychological horror here is next level. Nothing horrific to look at, just something taking control of people and manuplating the worst instincts of humanity. But I think that my favourite thing about this one is the total lack of explanation. We still have no idea what that was, or even if it is completely gone.

This such a great episode, basically one set, no big effects just a well written script around a clever idea. Loved it & feel a bit sad it doesn't get the love it deserves. The episode exposes one of humanities weaknesses & that is the herd mentality & how fear makes us jump so quickly to anything that makes us feel safe, even if it is a lie we made up. 23:49 I will give this woman 1 little bit of respect that she realised what she was & felt a moments shame but again retreated into her denial of what she is.
26:20 To be very fair to the creature its whole thing is copying and learning from what it saw. So its first thing copied personality wise was the prideful, prejudice humanity who immediately only thought of helping themselves. The creature saw humans worrying about their survival so it did the same making it have to take drastic measures to ensure it stayed alive just as they were willing to do with the door. The dad was making it about them vs us so the creature immediately saw its self as its own side so it thought i gotta get the attention on someone else. So it did making the Doctor the main focus so everyone would see it as on their side. The humans that took offence to being called dumb showing pride now the creature is feeling pride in the fact it has tricked them. These people who consider themselves intelligent it has tricked them! I think thats why it asked the professor to pick it up first. It was seeing if it could get the smartest man in the room other than the doctor to fall for the trick first and he did. And the fear it was copying was the driving emotion of it all its hiding it for the trick but it clearly feared the cold and the dark of the outside.
24:20 I am STILL mad, they never officially released that piece of music that plays at the end of this episode. I want to have it. And if they would strike you, if you didn't edit it out (which you kinda did), that's even double evil! I think this episode is the first time we hear it. I remember another time in the series 6 Human Flesh two parter. I realize, it's a very simple piece of music but it is SOOO emotionally powerful. I just wanna have it. And I would pay real money for it!
There’s a Hitchcock film called Lifeboat, this episode reminds me of that. It’s really interesting look at human behavior and takes place pretty much 100 on a lifeboat set in , I believe WWII. It’s a black and white film.
First episode I ever saw. I had no idea what the show was about. After watching this I had even less idea of what the show was about, and never watched it again. Until my Who-loving ex-boyfriend insisted I give the show another chance, starting at the beginning of NuWho. Thank goodness he did! By the time I got to seeing this episode in it’s correct place in the story, I understood and LOVED it for just how unusual it was! It’s in my top 3 of all episodes. I dropped the boyfriend, but kept my new-found love of this show. 😉
I love this episode, as you just witness in the episode it handles how the people will react in a similar situation, with a little fraid and paranoia. This episode is perfect to show to your psychologist 😊😊 ❤❤.
This episode reminds me of the 1980 movie "Airplane!" and its sequel "Airplane II: The Sequel" about a space shuttle trip to the moon. Those might be good movies to watch on your channel, millions of people love the first one the most. But that type of humor is also in the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" TV series, Radio series, film, and things like "The Naked Gun", and "Transylvania Twist" 1989.
If I'm being completely honest, I doubt I'll ever react to the Airplane movies. The Naked Gun movies were a staple in my household growing up because my brothers loved them. But, I didn't really enjoy them and my sense of humor was obviously a lot less mature back then. It's just not the style of comedy I enjoy. :-/
If you're scared of flying I recommend listening to ATC recordings during emergencies, hearing them calmly handle the problem made me much less scared if anything were to go wrong during a flight.

It's a mystery and it's left open to your own interpretation that was the purpose in a show like Dr. Who you never get complete answers to everything. I liked this one because it was proper scary creepy Dr. Who as it should be probaly for me one of the best of the Tennant era for me personally i'm also fascinated by the unseen creature that was possessing the woman and also that the Doctor this time didn't know what the alien creature was so this was something new for him it's considered one of the top 10 of fandom the next episode is my least favourite and one i never often go back too as i'm probaly one of those rare fans that don't like Doctor-lite episodes.
".... I was entertained ...." Yes, I could see that. 12:12 ---> 12:34 that's basically me watching every horror movie. XD It was not my favorite but they did manage to bring a scary story, using bacially one set and a handfull of (anoying, true) characters, but still I was captivated .... and so glad it was over. To much tention for me. What am I saying, to much tention in a Doctor Who episode? Unheard of!!
I finished rewatching NuWho for like the 3rd time 😂 this time with 60th anniversary specials. (They were fantastic! 😃) I like seeing the darker side of humanity in Doctor who. I think this episode it’s one of the scariest ones because it’s so damn realistic. Of a bunch of people were trapped in one placed for many hours and with danger coming after them. Holy crap the paranoia and desperation surely kicks in. Probably one of the reason I’ve never been in a cruise and I don’t like long flights 😅
Wow I've been looking forward to your reaction on this episode for about a year not Midnight's one of my favourite stories of all time i think in regards to your point about not feeling satisfied with the ending is intentional we were never supposed to know what happened why it happened what the midnight entity was because it would cheapen the mystery about creepy factor so i believe the fact the audience is left feeling what TF just happened is kinda the point great reaction look forward to your reaction to future episodes.
oh my goodness Midnight is the best "bottle episode" of New Who in my opinion. The next 3 are a roller coaster and you are gonna LOVE them - can't wait to see your reactions!!!
This episode scares me more than any other. Because the Doctor didn't save the day. They were helpless against this foe. If not for that brave, nameless attendant... The Doctor would have been gone. Horrifying.
One of my favorite episodes - like you say: mostly just talking, but it makes for one of the most creepy & tense episodes! I don't know what gives me more chills: the 'creature' itself & it's motives, or the fact that the Doctor has no idea what it is & is essentially helpless!
Great reaction as always! I really like this episode! I think it’s a great one off and love that we still don’t know about the creature. The couple are so annoying but I’m sure everyone has encountered them types of people in their life Sooooo excited for the next one as it’s one of my top 10 episodes of Doctor who
This is one of my favorite episodes most likely because of how unique it is. It’s one of the few genuinely frightening/creepy episodes and it feels somewhat realistic in terms of how people are likely to react when frightened. Now I will say somewhat in defense of the people the Doctor felt a bit naive in retrospect like they were spot on when they said he was essentially doing nothing but claimed he could contain the entity when they got back as that seemed highly unlikely. Also, yes he told them to shut up and they didn’t BUT he also wouldn’t shut up either. 🤷🏻♂️
I love this episode, it’s very much a “What would happen if The Twilight Zone and Doctor Who had a baby?” type story. For me, it’s a chamber piece, watching some really talented actors match off and do it impeccably. It reminds me so much of Blink at times, that uneasy feeling just keeps building until the horror is revealed. And what’s the true horror? When it comes to a crisis, it’s us, look how fast we turn and how quickly we look to blame. Good stuff.
I’m only just starting and I’m hoping this is the fan favourite that you said you didn’t like and it’s not turn left 😭 I couldn’t bare it if you didn’t like turn left
You can relax. This is the fan-favorite episode I was referring. lol It's not that I didn't like it, it's just not a top episode or a favorite for me personally.
While I think this one was well-done, and I can understand why people who like it a lot do so. It is the most Twilight Zone like episode of DW, and reminds me a lot of Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. Nonetheless it is not one of my favorites. It's fine, just wanted something more to go with it.

And the fear it was copying was the driving emotion of it all its hiding it for the trick but it clearly feared the cold and the dark of the outside.
This always reminds me of the short story The Monster's are Due on Maple Street which was turned into a Twilight Zone episode.
“What was her name?” Even now that line is bone chilling.
Brilliant episode. No reliance on effects, just good story and great acting
such an interesting character study. nothing scarier than humans pushed to their absolute limit and into a corner lol
If you're scared of flying I recommend listening to ATC recordings during emergencies, hearing them calmly handle the problem made me much less scared if anything were to go wrong during a flight.
at 2:25 that person in the black hair he is one of the main actors on the tv show merlin where the person who plays gills in buffy is in it too who was in series 2 episode 3 of doctor who
Merlin has come up quite a few times since the School Reunion episode. Seems like it's pretty popular. lol I've got it on my list to include in a future poll for a pilot episode reaction.
Forgot Merlin was in this episode 😅
Maybe not one of the best episodes...but from an acting stance, what they accomplished was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!
A very interesting episode. Great performance by _Scott & Bailey's_ Lesley Sharp as Sky/the entity.
One of the best episodes ever. Kind of sad you didnt fully appreciate that masterpiece.
We all have our preferences. I prefer meaty episodes that have to do with an overarching plotline over one-off/self-contained episodes. 🤷♀️
@@BritanyBingesAren't all non-two-parter Doctor who episodes one-offs?
Easily one of my favourite episodes of New Who, And I love the mystery of it. Makes it more powerful
Jethro had his own show as Merlin.
I've been hearing about Merlin ever since the School Reunion episode. Seems like it's pretty popular. lol I've got it on my list to include in a future poll for a pilot episode reaction.
One of my favorite episodes of all time!
Midnight and Blink are the two episodes I tell people to watch if they want to try out Doctor Who.
One of the best episode...one place, a few people and brilliant screenplay....
yeah, I usually don't rematch this one.
The only things missing from this episode was the Twilight Zone theme and an intro/outro by Rod Serling...
This was a very good episode for being so scaled down. Very good acting skills from all of the cast. Thanks for a great reaction ⭐
So glad you enjoyed the reaction!
".... I was entertained ...." Yes, I could see that. 12:12 ---> 12:34 that's basically me watching every horror movie. XD
It was not my favorite but they did manage to bring a scary story, using bacially one set and a handfull of (anoying, true) characters, but still I was captivated .... and so glad it was over. To much tention for me. What am I saying, to much tention in a Doctor Who episode? Unheard of!!
Now THIS is brilliant writing.
I finished rewatching NuWho for like the 3rd time 😂 this time with 60th anniversary specials. (They were fantastic! 😃)
I like seeing the darker side of humanity in Doctor who.
For me it was one of the scariest episodes ever made.
A nice companion-lite episode.
17:10 and Russell wrote it within 3 days!
So impressive!!!!
the next episode is a tear jerker. Crown jewel in Tate's crown.
I'm excited to revisit them as I edit them over the coming weeks. :)
"I like the fun stuff." me knowing whats coming...oh no...
This episode scares me more than any other. Because the Doctor didn't save the day. They were helpless against this foe. If not for that brave, nameless attendant... The Doctor would have been gone. Horrifying.
This episode always gave me a twilight zone vibe.
I would really recommend watching Merlin as well! It's lots of fun!
The couple are so annoying but I’m sure everyone has encountered them types of people in their life
Sooooo excited for the next one as it’s one of my top 10 episodes of Doctor who
So glad you enjoyed the reaction! I'm excited to revisit Turn Left for the first time as I edit in the next few days. :)
3:44 seeing a lot of what Tiktok has to offer. Overloading the brain with various stuff like this, seems about right lol
Plot twist: this is the origin story of Merlin, and he is responsible for everything 😏
"there's no cord on that phone" 15 years this has been bothering me. they couldn't have jammed the slot with play doh or something? it's so bizarre
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I almost cut that part out because I figured people would be annoyed that I mentioned something so trivial. lol
Stoked for your reaction to the next ep, probably my favorite of series 4. The rest of the season is molto bene.
I'm excited to revisit Turn Left for the first time as I edit in the next few days. :)
Yes it was amazing done. Love the reaction! ❤
So glad you enjoyed the reaction!
The last 2 episodes of Series 4 are my favorites of 10's era!
My favorite of 10's era isn't the last two, but it's still yet to come. ;)
1:40 I’m sorry this was not one of “fun time” episodes. Probably one of more creepiest episodes 😅
It’s both a favorite and yet it puts me on edge, 😂
Tennant is on top form in this episode. Definitely one of if not his best performance during his time on the show.
Good stuff.
What an intense episode!!!
I didn't like this episode when it first came out, but it's grown on me.
If you can get one of your main characters out of the show for a episode it makes the show cheaper. Same as their are few Doctor scenes in 'Turn Left'
Ooh, this is a GOOD one.😊
she is talking about her partner, and they end up in a bad way.
I’m only just starting and I’m hoping this is the fan favourite that you said you didn’t like and it’s not turn left 😭 I couldn’t bare it if you didn’t like turn left
You can relax. This is the fan-favorite episode I was referring. lol
It's not that I didn't like it, it's just not a top episode or a favorite for me personally.
THANKS for this!!!
26:23 well, it wasn't necessaries evil. It could have learned the evil from copying the humans
While I think this one was well-done, and I can understand why people who like it a lot do so. It is the most Twilight Zone like episode of DW, and reminds me a lot of Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. Nonetheless it is not one of my favorites. It's fine, just wanted something more to go with it.
lol the start! Who in 2024 says “there’s no cord on that phone” 😂 are you from the past
Someone who grew in the 90s and knows exactly what the hole on the bottom of the phone is for. 😉😂
This was my favourite episode until the series 10 finale, and I still think it's like objectively the best in terms of writing quality.
This doesnt mean it's her or anyone else you would recognize from the show, but i recommend skipping the intro next episode for unrelated reasons
Actually, next two episodes. Again, unrelated reasons
lol Well, I appreciate the cryptic tone of the comments, but I'm actually in the 2022 specials over on Patreon. So, it was a while ago that I recorded these.
Welcome to the human race.
Want to see the fun stuff?
Yeah...this is fun stuff!
