  • Vitrectomy is one treatment for a detached retina. The vitreous - the clear liquid in the middle of the eye - is removed and replaced with gas or silicone oil that holds the retina in place against the wall of they eye. The tears or weak areas are then treated by freezing or laser pulses.

When i had this done i was put under, but ive seen videos online of the patient being fully awake while they did it. So maybe doctors do it differently. Not sure.

@@Joeymurda87 hey, when you did this procedure, how long did you take to recover your vision? please reply as I will be doing this procedure in the next 2 weeks

@@nguruzzdesigns i had the procedure done . It depends really on what you are doind a vitrectomy for .i.e haemorraghe , retina issues , foreign bodies etc . Depending on the underlying problem will determine how long vision may take to recover

I had this done a couple of weeks ago. Only the affected eye was anesthetized (numbed). I received some sedation (twilight sleep), so I was relaxed but conscious during the procedure.

The gas bubble will be absorbed within, normally, one month and that space will be filled with queous humor.

@@Harsaran989 NO- in fact i can see LESS now out of the retina surgery eye..just light is all I can see. I'm going back next Friday- and he said if it's not better- he'd "go in again and see if he can make it behave" was his working. He may and he may NOT- I am going to ask if the chance of sight is only slight-- or a percentage, and if it is - then I'm NOT doing any more. Partial sight is worse than NONE- because it makes the good one work harder and it's having trouble too!!!

@@Harsaran989 THAT is NOT to discourage you-- remember, my retinal detachment was 4 years old- and they tell you they must be done within 48 hours of damage or they won't work...This was more an experiement to see if it would be possible. My doc pioneered some of that surgery and is trying to revive older injuries..
