I first learned about vitrectomy about 20 years ago, and was horrified by everything about it. 2 months ago, I had a cataract surgery in my one eye with adequate vision which dropped lens fragments into the back of my eye, which caused my eye pressure to spike high enough to kill my optic nerve within a few weeks. Instead, a vitrectomy removed the lens fragments and thus halted my eye's self-destruct sequence. As a bonus, I also got rid of the countless floaters that have annoyed me my entire life. A month after the vitrectomy, I still have some visual acuity issues, but I'm not blind.
The surgery which terrified me more than any other is now the surgery I value over any other. I'm sure there's some lesson to be found in this. 🙂

I just had all 3 surgery at once. Only 31 but have always had severe myopia in both eyes, wear scleral lenses for contacts and still don't get 20/20. A guy rear ended me while completely stopped on a highway. He was going 50 and shoved the car into a semi. On his phone and no insurance go figure. This cause retinal detachment. I noticed floaters in left eye about 4 days. Went to an eye doctor the following week, sure enough was one, same day I started seeing the black veils. 3 days later I was scheduled to have just a sclerap buckle. 1 hour surgery turned into 3 and half hour, put that buckle on, gas and oil. Had to keep head down to posture for a week. Go back in a month to removed the oil and do laser on 3 tears in the other eye. 10 days later after initial surgery super blurry vision in left eye. But seems like I can almost see better in distance. Which is weird since I have to hold my phone less than an inch from my nose normally without corrective lenses to read anything on it. Now with the left eye I can hold it maybe 4 inches from nose and can see although still super blurry. Been a weird experience.

I'm having a BAD cataract removed on 8th- by my specialist- and he says since it's old (happened in 2017) and hard- on a scale of 1-10, MINE is a 15 or MORE.. and instead of 10 min. as usually required to get a lens out-- this one will take an hour or MORE. Then, while he is IN there- he's doing the Vitrectomy. He had sent me to a MORE special specialist- and he confirmed I do have a DETACHED retina- said it looked like a cone. ( I can see light through the very old hard cataract- if it's bright-- and I can move my head all around and there are NO 'blind or blocked vision spots) . I'm hoping that after this surgery- I can actually see fine- because the cataract is gone.. and that the retina will NOT be as bad as they think. They have given me drops of extra strength- for 90 day period. He also said it would be a ROUGH one for ME too.. afterward- not during. I'm thinking, since I haven't been able to see the last 4 years-- if something happens due to the bad cataract or retina detachment-- if vision isn't possible after- I'll NOT have any more repair surgeries and just WEAR a PATCH on that eye- since the right one is healthy and he's going to put a Panoptics lens in after this one heals well enough. ADVICE???

    • @davidwayne9982
      @davidwayne9982 2 года назад +1

@@maddawgzzzz Well, the cataract looked like an actual rock. The retina was detached around the outisde edge and "cupped" inside. they re-attached that and it's healing. I have what is called secondary ctaracts now-- which is a film on the back of the cornea that usually stays clear- but for me it's getting dark and making me unable to see- so they are going to Laser that off. I've had 5 surgeries including the cataracts. iridotomy (make a hole to reduce pressure) and now pressure is up in my GOOD eye- (as result of a spider bite). so using strong drops for that. BUT visiion is almost perfect in my good eye- and the one that WAS blind- I can see a LITTLE- and makes progress each day.. I go next Tues to check the pressure again and arrange the laser work for secondary cataracts and a floater. Then I see the specialist that did the retina Sept. 9th and he is going to go in for scar tissue removal and touchup- but says it's looks really good. I'm reading this very small print on here from 2 ft. away with NO glasses!!!

Vitreoctomy directly causes cataracts within 2 years in 80% of those treated. It also causes severe problems with cataract lens replacement given the loss of its supportive vitreous gel, and causes miopía and monocular double vision. Avoid vitreoctomy, it just makes eyes surgery easier for surgeons at a higher cost for patients. In Japan, there are ophthalmologists who work through or around the vitreous to avoid these problems.

I wonder, what prevents the eye from deflating after this surgery, because I assume, it can't stay hollow. Does the vitreous body grow back after some time?

    • @cbeyedr
      @cbeyedr  6 лет назад +6

Get that question a lot. The vitreous is filling some of that space, but it is the watery aqueous fluid which keeps the eye inflated, and fills the vacated space. It is constantly being produced by the ciliary body, and exits through the trabecular meshwork, the balance of those processes maintaining the intraocular pressure. Your eye is just as happy without the vitreous.

I have been going to a retina specialist for the past two months, I began perceiving floaters and became annoyed and I went in to the retina specialist as it was so bothersome. Come to find out I have lattice degeneration and about a dozen holes in my peripheral retina on both eyes. He recommended we laser around the holes to basically weld down the retina to prevent detachment. I have gone for three laser treatments so far and have about 3 to go , just had one done this past Monday actually . The day of and day after there is some aching sensation and then some days later it begins itching. I am only 30 years old and my floaters have had me debating getting a vitrectomy just for floaters. My floaters are a combination of vitreous syneresis and fibers from the many holes in my retina, luckily my macula is fine and I don’t have any vision changes aside from bothersome floaters.

I went in on Friday to have my partial vision loss in the lower left quadrant of my peripheral vision (for my right eye) diagnosed. They said it is a partial retinal detachment. I should be having a vitrectomy within the next week. If I can notice that the vision in my center of vision is distorted does that mean my macula is being affected? Is it too late to save my vision completely?

    • @cbeyedr

I had developed what I call “snow” of round greyish dots in my eyes . A day later I had bigger floaters and cobwebs.
The Optom found a retinal break.
I had a laser treatment - -through the eye - on the retinal break at the doctors office.
A week later there was so much more snow (believed to be a blood vessel bleeding) and other floaters that the doctor decided to do a vitrectomy in hopes of finding a bleeder to cauterise.
They didn’t find one, but while in the eye they lasered the original break again in case there were blood vessels in the area bleeding into the eye.
It now been a week since surgery and I have a few questions.
    1) It is normal for me to see the Bubble from inside the eye? I see it very clearly.
1a) How long before the bubble disappears?
    2) The bubble appears to be getting smaller, and sometimes I can see (not well at all) over top of the bubble, and I see floaters again.
Not as many, but still some floaters/snow.
Is it normal to see some floaters after a vitrectomy? Are they left over blood spots that couldn’t be removed?
    3) Do they try to flush the eye during the surgery a couple of times after removing the vitreous to try and remove as much blood as possible?
    4) A week after surgery my vision is still very foggy. I can barely see a foot in front of me, and even that is very foggy.
    Is that normal?
    4) How long before my vision is clear?

Apparently the lens was scratched during vitrectomy so that's why I couldn't see after surgery.
The opthom who did the surgery said they usually replace the lens while doing the vitrectomy because you usually have some cataract on the lens anyway, so may as well get it done all at once.
So I made another trip to get measured for a lens (I think that's what they did) and then another trip to replace it.
At first I still noticed a few floaties, but not many, and no where near like before.
I occasionally noticed a spider web, but most of all the floaties and webs have gone away over time.
I read online that they can settle to the bottom of the eye and stay out of the way.
I am much better off than before.
I was curious however that of the 4 people in our room waiting for surgery for our eyes, two were back a second time, and the third was back for a third time.
I believe he got the elastic, or rubber band surgery that wraps a band around the eye. Don't know much about that.
But I was very glad to get sight back in that one eye. It's very tiring operating with one eye.

@@jasonmarshall6654 I could be wrong, but when my optometrist first saw my floaters he was quite urgent about me seeing an opthalmologist.
I was told later that if it wasn't lasered sooner than later, that more of the retina can become dislodged, thus reducing the chance ofa successful laser surgery with a positive outcome for your eyesight.
I would suggest -- if you haven't already -- talk to your optometrist or ophthalmologist about the dangers of putting off the surgery.
Again I could be wrong, but that was my memory surrounding issues of not getting the surgery done.

    Hi,
My son developed a black dot within his vision in the center of his left eye and we were told by doctors in the UK that it shouldn't get worse. About a year later he has now told me that this morning he can see 4 dots in his left eye. The doctors originally told us that it was due to a small bleed in his retina. Is there anything that can be done to improve his vision? I will be very greatful for any information as nobody here seems to give me a straight answer. Would Vitrectomy surgery help at all? Thank you in advance!

    • @taradead

You are awake, but the eye is completely numb so you don't feel anything. However, the laser is not comfortable...but that depends on your tolerance (I have little).

You could go blind in that eye...no kidding!!! I waited a couple days after the appearance of the black curtain, but ,the 3rd day, it got exponentially worse throughout the day. Went from 20% black in the corner to almost covering my center vision by night...and what I could see over the top of it was all grey/smokey looking.

My ophthalmologist said there’s nothing that could be done about my vitreous floaters. I told her they are a nuisance especially when driving and she quickly dismissed me telling me that it’s normal and it’s not a cause for concern. When their clearly is procedures to treat floaters. She must’ve gotten her ophthalmology degree from dollar tree 🙄
