  • Not unlike the Lernaean Hydra of old, the opening of one box seems to yield two more. In this edition of DtC, Tom takes up his drink, cigar, and (slightly dull) blade to do battle with a pile of apparently indomitable foes.

    Nice video! The Japanese sword at the end of the video is a ‘shin gunto type 3’ officer sword. This type is dating from 1944 to late war. This version was a more simple version of the shin gunto type 98, the type 98 is the standard issued officer sword. This 98 has brown colors at the scabbard and grip. This type 3 you have is all original and the colors can change like yours from green to some kind of grey. Also red shade is normal to find. At the end of the war these types where produced. You also have other versions (late war emergency) with strange wood scabbards. Also these are original.
    Great video as always very good to see you also had a repro. Its good because we can see were the bad details are on the piece.
    👍

      @@luckybait thanks Jimmy. No problem, i am happy to help where i can. If you buy these swords its also very important to never ever touch the blade with your bare hands. Oil of your hands can damage the steel. Always oil it with some choji oil. You can check the tang for inscriptions like maker or date. Like mr wittmann is saying in this video this is a mass produced blade. Factory made, you will see a showa stamp and a date. Maybe a name of the maker. Very nice officer sword ether way!

      Well, I’m excited to say that UPS tried to make a delivery Friday afternoon, but I was at work, at CMP in Anniston Al. Trying to get our M 1 Garand store ready to open again, after our Chinese COVID attack shut us down all year,,so far this year !!!! I am off Monday so I am extremely excited to see the brown truck that is coming from Mr. Whitman’s house!!! I can’t wait to add my very first Samurai sword to my collection of M1’s. The fact that it is a WW ll vintage excites me the most! Even though it is a mass produced machine blade,,,,, It will compliment the 1944 and 1945 M1’s I have very nicely! Mr. Whitman, Thank You !!!! I’m sorry now for even haggling just a little with you!!!! You sir are the God Father of Militaria in America,, and your knowledge and contacts are worth what ever you ask in price!!!!! A word to all the collectors,,, don’t haggle with the master,,,,, you will just feel cheap when you do!!!! Just be glad there is someone like Thomas Whitman you can do business with!!! He never charges you for a stupid question and that is worth the price of admission!!!!!

I love all the types of videos you make, but certainly the best ones are the lectures and I can’t wait for the next one of those. I realize they take much more effort and I'm not asking you to do them, but if you do, I will appreciate that very much as I'm certain many others do as well. I would absolutely love a video on other dagger types not covered so far or a lecture on some types of swords not covered so far. I'm very interested in other nation's daggers from the period as well, it's much harder to find information on those, although it's probably the same for you.

    On the bronze: "1. Prize of the lottery (prize draw / raffle) of an Infantery-Regiment 2. War-Army-Night" The word "Kriegswehrnacht" is kinda hard to translate, some kind of festive army event with music, I found very little information about it, it was apparently something with military marching bands during the war, for morale etc

      I am german. The reason you could not find something is because it said 2. Kriegsweihnacht. Which means the 2nd Christmas during the war. The first in 1939 and this one in 1940. So it came from a lottery done on the 2nd wartime christmas.

    • @WittmannAntiqueMilitaria
      @WittmannAntiqueMilitaria  2 года назад +3

      The only real way to get rid of pitting is to grind/otherwise abrade it out, which I generally don't recommend doing. Even with slight pitting you're going to be removing material; done wrong or badly it can devalue the items more than the pitting itself does.
      Of course this depends on the severity of the flaw and your skill with metalworking, but honestly I think these blades are best left undisturbed, with all the natural scars they've collected over the years.

      I wouldn't use alcohol on any blade that had a darkened motto or trademark, but on anything else it should be fine if used carefully and sparingly. In the end it really depends on the sort of dirt you're trying to clean off.
      Too much cleaning is rarely good, and aggressive cleaning is never good.
