Melbourne you must be prepared for these amazing extremes of cold windy wet mornings all year round or hot windy northerly winds in December till late March
Actually this year , or at least this summer in Melbourne we have had probably the absolute best weather out of all the Australian states , you happened to strike the weather in an a couple of days of out of character for this summer , look at the ten day forecast , its awesome , and most of summer it has been like this , and it was mostly very pleasant with a few warmer ones throw in , but i dont think we saw a single 40 or 40+ this year , and about 12 or 15 years ago as a trend in summers it was common in melbourne to see lots of high 30C , and with some 40 and even mid 40s on occasion , the weather pattern seems to have changed for Melbourne with the heat , it appears the jet stream has moved a tad and other states now cop a lot of the big heat numbers we once used to get , , and i might add , sydney generally gets twice as much annual rain as melbourne , although in winter in melboune it can get dreary and miserable (and a tad colder on average than sydney) with a fair bit of drizzly coldish days like around 8 celcius to 12/13 celcius in winter i would say on average , but still not a lot of rain .
Weather on occasion can be a bit changeable , if its hot in the red centre and wind blows our way we cop the desert heat , if we get a bit of a jet stream from Antarctica blowing our way across bass straight we can cop it too :).
Dont tell anyone , but on the northern side of melbourne we tend to be in a bit of a shadow and often miss most of the cranky weather that the east and south coast gets ;) .

I can’t believe people still think Australia is just hot and sunny . It’s a huge land and we have different weather all over the country. We have rainforest, desert, highlands, grasslands. I live in Adelaide that has four seasons.
I think it was the fact that the previous day was HOT and sunny and then it completely changed overnight. We’ve never experienced that before
@@2Passports1Dream Melbourne's weather is greatly influenced by the "Antarctic Vortex". It's like a permanent cyclone over the south pole, and the cold arms usually sweep over Melbourne every 3-6 days. So in summer it could be 40C for three days, and 20C for the next three days.
But, overall, we have more sun and less rain than Sydney. :P

The duvet between two sheets makes it much easier for the cleaners to change the linen. It's not normal in people's houses in Australia, just hotels.
I dont think I've stayed in a motel or hotel with duvet covers. I'm pretty sure they were setup, like this, because of the ease of cleaning, like you said.
It also means more standardised stocks of linen, a duvet cover is an extra stock item
Oh that makes sense!! Yeah, it just seemed counterintuitive that so many people could just touch the duvet itself - but perhaps the hotels clean them a lot more regularly!
@@2Passports1Dream Yeah, good hotels will change out the duvets for cleaning on a regular, if not per guest, basis. And the sheets get changed each day so it's not really an issue.

My first time in Melbourne, many many years ago, I was getting confused where I was in city center. Then someone told me to just remember the main streets: "King, William, Queen, Elizabeth". Piece of cake after that.

Added to that if it's called "Little ______ Street", it runs east-west and is parallel to the north of the same named street, also it's one way vehicle traffic East to West.

That was also the day that it was a free storm that did major damage across the state, as I'm looking at when they were here, but they didn't mention that because it would've been all over the news and on the friendly newspapers - they can't clean ignorance there, but that wouldn't Get the likes would it?.
I have had Sunburn & hypothermia in the same day.
I would hate it. Do you rug up and bring an umbrella or leave home in shorts, t-shirt? When it's that unpredictable, it's impossible to plan for.
I would love to see 4 weathers in a day.
On our first trip to Melbourne, we arrived at 9am it was stinking hot, belting down rain at 11am, and freezing cold at 2pm.
We are renowned for having 4 seasons in one day on occasions.

@@bingo000 Weather changes more dramatically when you're near seas or oceans. Go to any state capital and you'll have days here and there where a front comes through and you go from sun to wind to rain to colder. Melbourne happens to be topographically positioned where it happens far more frequently and dramatically than any other state capital.
And that’s why we love our Melbourne - keeps you on your toes with the weather!

A lesser known fact about Melbourne is that it has the lowest annual average rainfall of all Australian capital cities - 518mm compared to 1044mm in Sydney and 1080mm in Brisbane. There's probably only 5-10 days a year in Melbourne that are complete wash outs - unfortunately you got one of them. There's so much to do here (indoors and outdoors) that people generally just get on with life anyway.

@@2Passports1DreamIf you look at a map of Australia and imagine where the Sun is shining directly on the land you will work out why Melbourne has changeable weather (the cold air tries to meet up with the hot air). Our weather works in basically 5 dsy cycles.

@@2Passports1Dream Melbourne has far more rainy days than Brisbane though. In the sub-tropics huge amount of rain can come around in a few hours rather than spread over many days.

I don't mean this as a criticism at all, just my view. I find it funny how people call rainy weather miserable. I think all weather is beautiful. I never give it a thought and it hardly stops me doing what I want. I love walking in rain. I love watching rain and I love cosying inside. I love it when its hot as well. When my loved ones say to me..
' its a miserable day'...I say...' don't you insult my day' haha. They've learnt not to winge about the weather in front of me now, haha. It could be our last day, so enjoy it.

Totally agree. I experienced Sydney's terrible 1994 bushfires and had hot ash landing in my garden. I was really scared and swore then that I would never complain about the rain again. Extreme heat is hideous but IMHO rain is beautiful.

What you call a duvet is commonly called a dooner in Australia. In private homes the dooner is always in a cover, which is often brightly coloured. In many places in Australia a dooner is also simply too hot to sleep under. Dooners became popular, probably around the 1980s. Before that it was common for the bed to be covered in a beadspread or quilt. These were just there for neatness and you wouldn't normally sleep under them.
A little correction - it's a doona...and yes, it's supposed to go in the doona cover so this is really odd as you say 👍

Melbourne is the land of extreme weather. Friday started with a feels like temp of 12c and Saturday to Monday is 38-39c and back down to high teens next week. You can go from 40c to 16c in an hour.

Best place for coffee. Worked at Commonwealth Bank nearby and we went there every morning.
We call it a Doona and not a Duvet. It's an Aussie thing. Using three sheets, one over the Doona, one under, and a fitted sheet over the mattress is relatively new but has spread through many hotels. It's because many guests lay on top of the beds or even sleep on top, rather than between the sheets. It makes changing the bed and cleaning sheets easier. Hotels contract in the bedding materials and the contractor cleans them as well. It's all about saving money.

No fitted sheets in hotels otherwise they'd constantly be throwing away bottom sheets, they use hospital corners instead with a standard flat sheet. I'm in Australia eiderdown or duvet used to be common words in Australia until Doona became the norm.
Regarding your sheet/duvet problem, what you remarked on is a problem in cheap hotels. It's cheaper to have them cleaned than duvet covers.
'Doona' is a brand name (like Hoover for vacuum cleaners and Thermos for , umm, thermoses 😅) but either way, that's what they're called here.
I've never been to a hotel in Oz where they've used a separate cover, regardless of hotel class, they've always been two sheets. That said, some places do it better than others so your not twisted in the sheets when you sleep.

Melbourne has very little protection from south-westerly weather, obvious on a map but often overlooked. Weather generally builds in heat over a few days, culminating in hot NW winds blowing from the central outback (as you experienced). Then a cold front will move through, dropping the temps (sometimes 10-15°C in a couple of hours, and swinging the wind to be from the SW. SW winds, coming from the southern ocean, are predominantly cool and wet.
This happens in Sydney too, when a southerly buster roars through after a hot spell, but Melbourne's location and lack of land to the SW makes it more frequent and noticeable.

When you both were walking across Princes Bridge, that cricket ground was the MCG, Melbourne Cricket Ground. On a clear day you would have had views over Port Phillip Bay from the Eureka Tower. Welcome to Melbourne.

I used to manage Holiday apartments. We always put the Doona inside a a brightly coloured doona cover. Only takes a few moments to turn it inside out put hands inside, find the far corners. Grab the front corners of the Doona and whip into the air. we also had a sheet between the Doona cover and the persons body. So doona cover didn’t need to be washed every time.
Oh yeah that makes a lot more sense - that’s how we do it at home!!

We have a top sheet separate from a duvet because very often it's too hot to keep a duvet on and we sleep under just a sheet. Having layers like this means you can adjust the temperature of the bed clothes. That top cover on the duvet is meant to be a bedspread. Those thin little duvets (I have several on my bed in a layering system depending on weather) are very easy to wash and dry. I love them, they are so light yet cosy if needed. It's like sleeping in a bed of clouds.

I like Melbourne. I lived there briefly for work and it’s quite a sprawling city that feels like a bit more of a large country town in some ways. It’s a great place for families and housing is way more affordable. The weather can be a bit chaotic, but there are great places to eat and nice gardens and museums too. I’ve never seen an edible coffee cup! Nice idea for the environment but I thought it was cork! lol. Enjoy guys!

I prefer the sheets sandwiching the quilt. At least I would have more confidence they would be cleaned and changed between each guest. I’m not sure actual quilt covers would be changed and cleaned each time.
Melbourne Weather - lived there right in the middle, for 5 years; four changes of weather in the one day; wake up sunny, then wind comes, then clouds then rain(light), then sunny again then night ! So, so much building in Melb since we left in 1978 !
Mostly people complain (not only new visitors) that Melbourne’s weather is colder, that’s because it is, compared to states and cities further North. Go to Brisbane in Queensland and you’ll find a warmer climate, go further South to Tasmania, it’s colder. Many hours flying after Tasmania, you’ll find yourself in Antarctica. This country is so big, we cater for everyone.

Yes, Sydney has twice the rainfall of Melbourne. However it rains differently. Sydney can have extremely heavy rainfall dumps, which cause much damage whereas Melbourne rain is generally lighter and longer. However, Melbourne's weather is changing, slowly moving from temperate to sub tropical . Winters are not so cold as they used to be and the weather is warmer. Global warming ! @@2Passports1Dream
Doonas are often way too hot to sleep under. Removing them or having partial coverage is much easier when it's surrounded by sheets instead of totally inside a cover.

*THE TWO HOTTEST* days I've experienced in my life were in Melbourne and Adelaide. Melbourne got to 46.4° and they closed down our games studio on St Kilda Rd because the air conditioning couldn't handle it. We all bought beer and went and sat in the park on the other side of the tram tracks.
@@elrey8876 I remember that - or a similar day. I opened the door to check out the heat and it was like a blast from a furnace. Don't know how the wildlife stays alive.
We try to 'Order' rain about once a week to wash down the Footpaths and Streets. Helps the Gardens stay green in this Garden State. ❤

Welcome to Melbourne where we never know what the weather is going to be and in fact our last couple of Summers have been rubbish. Over 200 ethnicities in Melbourne as well as over 1,000 suburbs. Most restaurants have an International menu with some fusion if not specifically a cuisine such as Thai, Chinese, Italian, Greek, African, Napalese, Sri Lankan, etc etc , with the odd specific food style restaurant like American BBQ etc. Melbourne has loads of good Vegan restaurants too. The only place I could buy a Winter coat in Melbourne in December on the eve of a trip to the UK was the QV Market. The jam used in most donuts is actually an apple sauce base.
Melbourne really seems like the ultimate melting pot of everything 😍 in terms of both culture and cuisine and we LOVE it!
During summer at the market, there's also a night market on Wednesday nights which is heaps of fun, they have more food and live music and stuff.

People exaggerate with the prices in Australia. I've lived in 6 countries, Australia has had the highest average salary and has been the cheapest in terms of food and groceries in comparison to the wages. However, housing and insurances here are 100% scamming, I think people have different perceptions of the word "expensive" but from my experience, coffee and food prices, electricity and gas here are a bloody bargain. That being said, you got to put in consideration, clothes here are expensive, travelling abroad is expensive due to the distance, etc. Overall, most developed countries are very livable. And if you want to see true expensive, then Switzerland is the king lol

Ah yeah you make some excellent pints! As visitors we didn’t even have to consider housing prices or clothes shopping! Only seeing things from the surface, I suppose! lol unlucky (or lucky) for me, my mom lives in Switzerland and popping to the corner shop to get crisps will cost you and arm and a leg 😂😅

The Melb weather is very very changeable . Living here you get used to it, but I can see that you would be been taken by surprise . South Melbourne market is also fantastic for food and shopping , they are famous for their freshly shucked oyster bars and fresh seafood . Glad you enjoyed our town . Come back anytime

I used to work for a lady who lived in the CBD on top of a seven story building. It had eateries on the ground, warehouse and export business on the others with an apartment on top. You find that a lot in Melbourne. The older buildings have a lot of character.

Melbourne can have every version of weather one after another on the same day. Last time I visited I had to buy a long warm jacket just to cope with the weather as nothing I brought was warm enough

I was in Melbourne years ago implementing the System Operating Software for a mainframe computer. Great city, great people.
Duvets are taken off with all linen changes in a lot of hotels now. It's easier and more efficient to do it that way so no cover is required and that saves a cost as well.

A comment about the weather leads on to the small-talk, which Aussies love, with family, friends. acquaintances and strangers. I've has some interesting and informative conversations with people which started with the topic of the weather !
If you have a really hot windy day you know a cold front is coming. The cold front is responsible for pushing the hot air down south before it comes through. When it hits, the temperature can drop 10-15 degrees in 20 minutes. Sometimes the heat can get up to 40-45 degrees and is incredibly oppressive. So we often can't wait for that cool change to come through!
And, no, what was going on with your duvet is not normal. We usually use doona covers as well.
There's also a Food Hall in the QV Markets where they sell delicious deli products, seafood, bratwurst, coffee etc. Hope you got to visit there too :)

The Platform at Flinders Street station you refer to is technically referred to as platform 1, and the extension under Swanson street and ACMI/Federation Square is platform 14.
The super-luxurious rail service, The Ghan, departs from Adelaide Parklands Terminal, the train is so long that it is split in two for boarding in Adelaide and Darwin, otherwise following American styles with almost ground level or no platforms for the entire journey north or south through the centre of Australia.

Actually, you should try Lune Croissanterie - there's one in the city. An American food reviewer from NY times said it was the best in the world. If you have time, visit Phillip Island and the Great Ocean Road (you can book tour buses that leave from the city).

Years ago my Mum came to stay with us from Queensland. She was born and bred in one of the inner city suburbs of Melbourne (over 100 years ago now!) and going up into the SkyDeck with her was great.
She pointed out all sorts of landmarks, telling me that when she was a Girl Guide she was part of the guard of honour on the steps of the Cathedral when the Governor General's daughter was married there (I have a photo that all the Guides received). She also pointed out the Shrine of Remembrance and told me she remembered it being built when she was about 11 years old.
In Melbourne best to always carry a small folding umbrella even if the forecast is for okay weather 😊 you didn't go out on the Edge when at Eureca... It slowly juts out , the windows clear, and you look through the floor to 88 floors below to the street 😮

At home, Australians put duvets in covers.
In hotels, duvet covers aren’t washed, but sheets placed over the duvet are washed, so it’s somewhat more hygienic, and quicker and easier to change the sheets.
As for the skyline, the tall buildings are relatively new. They look horrid. As you will have experienced, many y buildings have views only of other buildings. I’d hate to live in an apartment like that.

You should come to Hobart, Tasmania. If you go to the top of Mt Wellington (Kunani- which unsurprisingly means 'Mountain' in tradidional dialect) you can pretty much see most of southern Tasmania!!!! (well maybe not but at least we have a 'real' mountain.
We definitely have to visit on our next trip to Australia!! 😍

We do use duvet (Doona in Australia) covers. Must just be a hotel thing. The American Jam donut van has been at the Market since 1950. All Melburnians go for the donuts.

I have a duvet, i have covers for it, so i can wash the cover. I live in Switzerland, we’ve had duvets forever, i used to live in Sydney before but moved back to Switzerland.

The reason for no Doona -Duvet covers is it is easier for the cleaners and also you know it has been changed compared to a cover which might not be changed after every person.

We do have proper quilt covers, that seems strange that that hotel didn't, the hotels I've stayed in all have covers.Melbourn is known for having all 4 seasons in 1 day. I'm glad you're still enjoying yourselves. I don't know if you'll get down to Tasmania, but if you get the chance, do go, as it's very beautiful.🙃

I’ve never seen the duvet (or doona as a lot of us call it) in between sheets. I’ve only seen it on top. In some people’s homes they have removed the top sheet and on,y have the bottom sheet and the doona. I think that’s terribly unhygienic. I bet they don’t wash the doona as often as they should. Melbourne’s weather has changed. It been warmer recently. For the next 3 days it’s going to be 38 degrees (over 100F). We are having a late summer which often happens. I always say summer is Jan-Mar these days.
