*UPDATE*... AND THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: My Discus actually have a lot of hiding spots between all the rocks, there is more space behind each rock than it seems on video, especially in the back. I have the temp set to 77° which is right in-between the liking of both fish. I would have preferred Cardinal Tetras but sometimes you just have to roll with what you were dealt and make the best of it. I'll probably switch them out eventually or possibly trade in the discus for smaller ones soon. Discus are also finally starting to eat bloodworms, the goal is to keep them well fed so they don't go after the tetras.
CoralFish12g I keep discus myself and they actually prefer higher temperatures around 80 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Blood worms are known to cause HITH (aka: hole in the head) due to the possible presence of parasites in them when cultivated. Good alternatives for discus food are beef heart, brine shrimp with spirulina, mysis shrimp, freeze dried black worm cubes with spinach (which you can stick to the wall of the tank and watch them pull apart) (makes for great video footage) or omega one discus pellets. But all in all it’s a great looking tank and welcome to the wonderful world of discus!
Keep discus well feed so they wont go after tetras?? You can do that to by separating them . Also bloodworms arent good to feed fish due to them may carrying parasites.

Beatiful discus but dragonstone and discus is not a good combination. Discus is skiddisch and spook a lot (did I say it right) and dragonstone very sharp.. Greetz form the Netherlands
I’ve been watching this channel instead of do my homework and I’m not even a fan of fish but I think watching him deal with all his fish has been helping me get use to them
Nice scaping, but i will have problem with ur discus, for the moment your tank has a sufficient size for sub-adult but you will quickly enter problems, they will easily take another 1/3 in size more. You'll have a second problem that is the hierarchy, the dominated has no hiding place to hide in order to escape the aggressions (they can be very violent with the dominated, nobody wants to live in the same room as his attackers) Think that in a short time, you will have to prepare a new tank 125 gallons for them
I have 8 discus and i dont know if they are a good idea for that tank. The tank size is good- but even mine, which are super tame and eat from my hand (and all have names)- they get spooked VERY easy and those are some VERY sharp rocks 😅 Edit: this isnt with all fish, but my discus ate up neons
Those discus will pick each other off one by one in that small tank. Nice fish, but get ready to pull all but 2 as soon as they pair up. Also, to make those Discus feel more secure in the tank, they want less light. Try some floating plants
Discus do best at about 85 degrees, optimum ph of 6-6.5. Max temp for neons should be 79 degrees, 7.0 ph (or slightly lower). I too would worry about the dragon stone with a skittish fish like discus, they'd be less prone to injury (and watch for territorial aggression with that many.) It's been 35 years since I had my tanks, just getting back into the hobby now that I have time. Good luck! It really is beautiful.
20 years ago I had a 20gallon coral tank its been just over 20 years and after discovering your channel I'm now seating up a 4ft saltwater tank thanks for your hard work and keep it up
What’s up 12g? I’ve been watching your videos for a couple months now and love them. I live about 40 minutes way in Oak Park, IL and will be venturing off to college next fall as a marine/aquatic biology major at either University of Miami or UC Santa Cruz! I actually own a female axolotl, while it’s not exactly a fish it is still a pretty unique aquatic animal. Love the videos and keep up the good work!
Discus are more happy in a planted/blackwater tanks tho. In nature they are in rivers with strong currents and hide in the shadow of the roots. Feeling sorry for those guys right now..
I enjoyed your video from start to finish. Thank you for sharing it. I live in the boonies and was lucky to find some guppies . I am old and disabled and this was my first attempt at aquascaping with what ever I could find. Did you know land moss will grow underwater ? Potho will too ! I cycled my tank w/ chubs from the river then put them outside in a small pond when I found some guppies. It might be half rigged up but guppies are happy as they keep dropping more and more babies.. LOL Anyway. Thank you for the inspiration. Beautiful job and fish .
If your Friend from the Fish shop Knew his Freshwater he would of told u Discus prefer low lighting and some discus keepers have tannings in their tank...Planted tank with driftwood is more suitable for discus than sharp edgy rock...this type of scape is good for small schooling fish
Wow what can I say your tank looks amazing and the schooling of the neon tetras looks brill, and its complete with the discus. Just awesome George. Don't u think u need a lid on ur tank
This was so cool! I love your tank and I love Discus. I am also a freshwater scrub. 😂 recently I’ve been OBSESSED with finding a jellybean parrot cichlid, but before that discus and gourami were my favorites!
Hello Jorge! Amazing video! I am glad you were able to take the fish home safely out in Golf, Illinois! I am in Chicago, Illinois! I will be there next year!
You should put some Corydora’s in the 80 gallon. They are great lil cat fish they only get a couple of inches. And they some in a variety of colors. I have 5 albino Cory’s, they are like dogs and pigs combined. They look for food all the time and they will stir up the sand to keep algae off of the sand.
I like your content but discus and neons together???? Neons don't do well at high temperatures and discus don't do well in cooler temperatures. You should have gotten cardinal tetras instead as they both like the same temperature. Also the discus may start eating the tetras once they are settled.
Hey .. I think I join your channel very late and on 15 may 22 I saw your this dream tank update video but then also I liked your discus and tetras .. Your tank set up is very nice .
Wonderful program. Great personalities and much learned from you. Question: why don't the discus go after the neons? They seem to be the right size for a tasty treat.
I’ve been watching for a while you really inspire me I just got a new 6 gallon freshwater tank with platys, zerbra danios, and neon Tetras keep doing what you’re doing :)
6 gallon?? Omg it's over populated I just put 3 guppy and shrimps in mine(5G) and it was too much ... these fish need so much more space especially the neon tetras.. you dont put them in a bigger tank I'm efraid they wont live long :(
Wow when you said the colors of the discus would change I thought they would just get like a brighter yellow but I was not expecting such pretty colors- anyways those are some really beautiful fish! Now I think when I get an aquarium in the future this is what I’ll go for
Bad pairing, due to different temperature requirements. Not ideal, especially when there are so many tetras that prefer hotter water. Neither fish will die at the in between temperature of 25/77 but neither will truly flourish. just my 2c
Hey George I got a question I got a new beta tank with one fish, my tank is a half a gallon tank it only has the betta in it I feed him 3 small pellets a day but so far I’ve done two water changes and the next day the water was cloudy again and it had a slime like thing floating on top is this normal? what do you recommend I do ? Do you have to soften your water for the discus at all? If you do, what are you doing to accomplish that?

Totally agree. Tank looks already over stocked. Will only get worse when the discus grow.
- Gets nice planted tank with elements of aquascaping: Okay, maybe he knows what he's doing.
- Mixes Neon tetras with discus: Oh god, why?
I personally believe that this is over stocked but still a beautiful tank
Yeah in this size it's more like 5 discus with nothing else ;/
