"The Camera Eye" is the fifth song from Rush's eighth studio album "Moving Pictures" recorded at Le Studio, Morin-Heights, Quebec, Canada in October and November 1980. The album was released on February 12, 1981. After touring to support their previous album, Permanent Waves (1980), the band started to write and record new material in August 1980 with co-producer Terry Brown. They continued to write songs with a more radio-friendly format, featuring tighter song structures and songs of shorter length compared to their early albums. This song being the exception, at 10:56, this was the last song Rush recorded that was over 10 minutes long.
Moving Pictures received a positive reception from current and retrospective music critics & became an instant commercial success, reaching number one in Canada and number three in the United States and the United Kingdom. It remains Rush's highest-selling album in the United States after it was certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for over 4 million copies sold. "Limelight", "Tom Sawyer" and "Vital Signs" were released as singles across 1981.
"The Camera Eye" is a two-part track with sections unofficially titled "New York" and "London". Peart wrote the lyrics after taking walks in both cities, recalling observations & the rhythms he felt during them. This song highlights the cultural differences between the cities of New York and London. Its title refers to short pieces of the same name in the U.S.A. trilogy of novels written by American writer John Dos Passos, one of Passos's works that Peart admired.[7] In the beginning of the track we hear a bustling New York city and a man saying "This is it Mac." "How about a tomato?" and "Fresh fruit" this is an audio clip from Richard Donner's 1978 Superman.
Taking its title from a section of John Dos Passos' U.S.A. trilogy, "The Camera Eye", at nearly eleven minutes long, is an anomaly in an album that otherwise is notable for its concise songs. Interestingly, while many other longer Rush songs feature a variety of themes, "The Camera Eye" is the essentially the same piece of music played twice with a similarly themed instrumental punctuating the final verse. That said, it is a brilliantly evocative piece of music that fits the theme of the album well, painting a vivid picture of two of the world's great cities: New York and London.
Peart had by this point in his life visited New York numerous times as well as living in London as an aspiring musician. His passion for travel would, years later, align with his abilities as an author when he published several travel memoirs. The vibrant images portrayed by this song's lyric show many of the hallmarks of his later travelogues: a clear focus on the history and make-up of the locations, as well as considerations for the winners and losers of the society - "The focus is sharp in the city".
The song's lengthy introduction with its suspense-building synthesizer and martial drumming is a rare example of Rush using a simple theme for a large section of the song. The song's powerful chords and synthesizer-driven sound give it an unusual timbre - as if Emerson, Lake, and Palmer were performing the Who's "Baba O' Reilly." There are no unexpected changes or musical breakdowns: it is simple, strident, powerful music. The bustling of the city, car horns, whistling of traffic wardens, and the impatient calls of citizens all help to create yet another moving picture in the mind of the listener.
The first verse focuses its attention on New York, while the second is about London. Musically, each verse is nearly identical, while the lyrics, in considering the cities similarities, arguably suffer the same repetitiousness.
The song's instrumental section, towards the end of the song, is a blast of power with a thrilling high-paced Lifeson solo, powerful hard rock drumming from Peart, coupled with the attacking gravelly clang of Lee's Fender Jazz bass.
As the song fades out, the unmistakable bong of Big Ben can be heard; one of two samples used for the London section of the song. The other, which occurs eight minutes and fifty four seconds into the track, is a mystery voice loudly burping before yelling "mornin' guv". (There are several translations of this; the voice is quite subdued in the mix. Most Rush fans believe this is an "English greeting," something like, "Ello, Mornin' Gov'ner." Another possibility is that he's saying, "More Dub," requesting a monitor adjustment in his headphones)
This is one of my favorite songs from the album, & in general. There's something special about this song that is hard for me to describe. In my opinion Rush did a fantastic job recreating this song live for this concert.
    * This is the #1 fan requested song for Rush to perform live.
    Alex Lifeson - Guitar
Geddy Lee - Vocals, Bass, Synthesizers, Pedal Synthesizers, Triggers
    Neil Peart - Drums, Lyrics

    I [New York]
    Grim-faced and forbidding
    Their faces closed tight
An angular mass of New Yorkers
    Pacing in rhythm
    Race the oncoming night
They chase through the streets of Manhattan
    Head-first humanity
    Pause at a light
Then flow through the streets of the city
    They seem oblivious
    To a soft spring rain
    Like an English rain
    So light, yet endless
    From a leaden sky
    The buildings are lost
    In their limitless rise
    My feet catch the pulse
    And the purposeful stride
I feel the sense of possibilities
I feel the wrench of hard realities
The focus is sharp in the city
    II [London]
    Wide-angle watcher
    On life’s ancient tales
Steeped in the history of London
    Green and grey washes
    In a wispy white veil
Mist in the streets of Westminster
    Wistful and weathered
    The pride still prevails
Alive in the streets of the city
    Are they oblivious
    To this quality?
    A quality of light
    Unique to every city’s streets.
    Pavements may teem
    With intense energy
    But the city is calm
    In this violent sea
    [Guitar & Bass Solo]
I feel the sense of possibilities
I feel the wrench of hard realities
The focus is sharp in the city

Imagine how much rehearsal and skill it took to pull this from the 1981 vault and play it 30 years later LIVE as part of the ENTIRE ALBUM. And it's an absolute masterpiece.

Possibly my favourite Rush song of all time. I saw them live on every UK tour they ever did, and for me the Time Machine one was IMHO the best. I'd waited 30 years after the original Moving Pictures tour to see them perform The Camera Eye again live. (they possibly did play it here before the SECC gig in 2011, but I'd need to look that one up!) Always wondered what Alex says just after the guitar pick toss to the audience? It looks like he's saying "Oh it's fine, don't worry!" Wish I could lip read, lol! Thanks for posting the entire show from Cleveland!

@@MysticRhythmsLive You’re very welcome, MRL!! Regretfully never saw them Live. Since Neil’s passing, I have totally obsessed with RUSH and their brilliance and craftsmanship. This is by far the most overlooked and underrated song from Moving Pictures.

@@chuckhutton5087 I really am sorry that you never saw them live. Having a great video to watch is a blessing especially in your case. I do think that Neil's passing really shocked people and many realized just what an awesome band Rush is. It seems like it's just human nature to be that way...even though they had ended as a band there was always the possibility that they might make another album or play a short tour. Neil's death took that possibility away and ignited a focus on the band that is still going strong.
This is one of my favorite songs by Rush. I do feel that it never got the attention it deserved. That said, it was the most requested song for the band to play live so possibly it was not as underrated as we think...it was just ignored on the radio in lieu of the shorter radio friendly songs. I for one absolutely love this song and was stoked to be able to finally post it here. Take care, Chuck.

This is one of my favorite tracks by Rush. I love the synths and crushing chords Alex plays, along with the guitar solo section where Geddy is basically soloing along with Alex. It is hard to believe that only three people are playing...most of that has to do with Geddy. He's playing synthesizer, bass, bass pedals, triggers, and singing to fill out the song. Along with Neil's awesome drumming and lyrics this song is just incredible.

This song sounds just like the studio recording from "Moving Pictures" even though some parts were cut-off, but it doesn't matter, and it still sounds really terrific. It's purely incredible here, because you finally get to see Geddy Lee, Alex Liefson, and Neil Peart playing this song live. These three are the absolute best at what they do. As a long time Rush fan, I never get tired of watching this great band perform live. This awesome song is a proven timeless masterpiece of theirs. Totally gifted musicians.
