- I get too much fog and chat about composition and creating depth in your photos. And I get no fog in the woodland and talk about how to embrace that.

Nigel, your videos are amongst the best of all my mentors. Every one of your videos TEACH how to improve one’s photography. Like your friend and another fabulous mentor of mine, Mads Peter Iverson, together you have transformed my photography like no others have. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thanks. Mads is a great guy 👍🏼
I use that 24-200mm on my Z6 Nigel. It plus the 14-30 are the only 2 lenses I need for landscapes.
Same! Have both. Great combo.
I had one of the absolute BEST and most memorable photography moments of my life on that hill! And that Reaching Out photo is gorgeous!
You timed that visit well! 👍🏼
Mads...please see my comment to Nigel pertaining to him and you about being the best teachers!
The only lens I currently use is the Nikon 18-300, rather enjoy using it. Just a hobbyist and really can't afford anything else. Love the freedom of wide to zoom it gives me.
I started early February as well to go out with one lens. I was suprised by the different compositions I experienced.
Thanks for sharing and I am looking forward to your future video’s!
Thank you for this video - and great shots! Sold the old heavier kit and just bought the Z6ii body for a lighter system. I have the z 14-30mm f4 and the z 70-200mm f2.8. Feeling a little naked in the middle I saw this and decided it would be the perfect solution. If I don't want to carry around the telephoto then I have two lenses. OR just carry this one and make the 24mm work. Really appreciate your videos and your honest yet positive take on your work. Keeping us newbies in mind is very much appreciated.
Only recently found your RUclips channel and I’d like to say how refreshing it is to see a channel about photography and not about specs and people validating their own purchases.
Just an honest and open discussion about making images. And that’s cool. Keep it up! Have people got recommendations for other such channels?
I’ve been pretty much shooting entirely on a Fuji xpro2 and 23mm lens for the last few years. It’s nice not to feel cluttered. Only thing I am considering adding to my walks out is a tripod to make my approach to photography a little slower and more methodical. May mean shorter walks though 😂
Mads Peter Iverson
Thomas Heaton
Thanks will check them out
We get so few foggy days here in coastal Virginia that it's a treat to get out and just capture as much as I can on those rare days. I spend the rest of my time time cataloguing the areas that I'll dash back to when the fog arrives.
Absolutely love the videos in which you go out for shoots! Its so much fun to see your process in action
Thanks
Nigel, love the thoughts of limiting the equipment. I admit I go over board always concerned I will want the lens sitting back home on the self. But, the creativity that can come from having just one lens I think could unlock some great photos we other wise would miss. Great message!
That sentence about the 2 extra hours in mountains instead of bed is so true. I'm gonna need to remind myself that sentence from time to time.
And that 24-200 lens is really interesting. Thanks for the share.
Great video Nigel, as always!
Just want to say thank you for the work you put into creating your videos. I can’t imagine how many times you had to walk up and down that hill in order to get the footage for the b-roll and the talks. Highly appreciated 👍😊
"I always remember that 2 hours on the mountain, and never the 2 extra hours of sleep", I like it, but tell my wife that.
Ha ha
I am with you on trying to take less gear and learning to shoot with just 1 or 2 lenses! I've got to say I am so envious of the FOG you get! Living in sunny Southern California, we don't get too much fog. But anyway, love the photos you captured. I am always fascinated by how you can find a great composition, while I look at your scene and see lots of clutter. But you always pull it off and I am learning so much! Thanks Nigel!
Thank You Nigel for these hikes with the 24-200mm. You just about have me hovering over the BUY me button for that lens..
That image of the single tree without the fog at around 13:30 has gone a long way to answering one of the questions that has been burning in my mind regarding getting an eye for woodland photography. The colour and textures of the gnarly tree set in front of the chaos of branches and saplings behind works in a similar way to the fog in my opinion bringing separation between the subject of the photo and its surroundings, obviously the fog brings its own unique atmosphere but that chaos in the background that i would often have discounted before really can work in the right composition. Thank you once again for your video, very insightful.
Another amazing Sunday morning... Thanks Nigel. I'd like to see your Reaching out shot with and without fog... kind of a before and after shot. It is stunning with the fog.
I tend to minimalist equipment too. I use my drone with a fixed lens, I hardly ever use filters. I rely on bracketing, stitching, a computational photography workflow and the unique aerial aspect to arrive at my photos. Took a while to work out the workflow but I seem to get consistent results now.
We so rarely get fog in Texas. Thanks for sharing Nigel ! @6:45 Love the photo, the muted green, the tree... all of it. @13:20 amazing tree and limb patterns!
I appreciate that you hike the hill multiple times to get the b-roll Your videos are a joy to watch, and I always learn something.
Great to hear!
These were fantastic fog photos. Great to be out when you can, and to reduce the amount of lenses you carry around.
"I always remember that 2 hours on the mountain, and never the 2 extra hours of sleep"... I actually paused the video to let that sink in. Excellent advice.
Love the photos.
I am also trying this year to concentrate more on composition and less on technics.
I live to go out in the fog, as you say it gives a beautiful separation.
You gave me some extra motivation today.
Thanks
So true on remembering the two hours of being on the mountain but not the two hours in bed! Sometimes it's hard kicking yourself out of bed though!
yep
Nigel ... just fantastic your videos! Deeply emotional and at the same time one can learn a lot about photography even when conditions are not optimal you always find a good shot. Thank you and keep going!
I'm just a semi-pensioner/hobbyist, whatever that means 😎 At 73 I do know about lugging extra weight around since most of my photography is done in the mountains of Glacier National Park in the US. So on the long 10-15 mile/+-2000+ft days, I will limit myself to my f2.8-16-50mm and f4-5.6 55-200mm for my Sony a6400.
Both make surprising good images considering their low cost. And yeah, getting up before dawn hasn't been fun here in NW Montana when temps were like -20C 😆
Nigel, I know this isn't really what you want to teach us, but I marvel at your video making skills. I've just started experimenting, and it seems like a completely different skill set. If you ever don't know what to talk about one week, I'd love to see a video on how you make (and process) your videos. It seems to me that you must do a lot of work setting up a camera on a tripod, moodily walking away from it, and then come back, pack it up, and move on...
Can't wait to receive my book. Your videos have been a huge inspiration for me to get back out there and start shooting again.
Love my Z 24-200mm. It's the best superzoom I've ever owned.
I live your style of photography, and love the (4k) quality of the videos with which you show the quality of the lense i am aiming for... 👍
So then in your opinion the 24-200mm is worth getting for quality photos? I’ve been on the fence about getting it. As of now I only have the 24-70mm that I got with the Z6 about 2 months ago, and it’s actually a very nice lens. However it doesn’t have that reach when you need it. Great video as usual with you and thanks for putting them out there!
Been in a similar mindset myself, Nigel. Here's to our backs and to our creativity! Also, congrats on 300K+ subscribers. Well deserved. 😎
I like the images and solitary tree emerging from the mist. Do you use the de-haze function in Lightroom if it’s too foggy? Do you find if that helps with more definition?
I've got a picture by a local Macclesfield artist Dick Vincent featuring a quote by Jack Kerouac "Because in the end, you won't remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing the lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain." This helps me on those cold early mornings.
Parallel diagonals - I always learn something from your videos or get a new idea to try.
Brilliant - good luck
I'm glad you got around to saying that the 24-200 wasn't exactly limiting. Great video as always
Got to remember what you said about not remembering those two extra hours in bed tomorrow morning when my alarm go's of! Need that as a tile above my bed 😃!
Thanks Nigel, I'm always learning a lot watching your videos !
You are great at marketing! You just sold me your Woodland book and I consider buying the 24-200 lens. Nikon should hire you :D Your content is really inspiring, I‘m glad I found your channel.
Glad to hear you have a hard time getting out if the bed too at times :D
But it's so true, the reward of getting up is always worth it!
Another very informative video as always Nigel thanks just a couple of things which I thought interesting and that is when you say about the diagonal lines coming in from the very corner as I try my hardest to do this but ime now thinking of your thoughts where it looks more pleasing to be slightly away so a really good point for me to try also when ime taking a lone tree I always try to get the whole of the tree in and not cut off any branches or tops where as a lot of your images you don’t stick to that but you always get a great composition of the subject maybe that might be a future video of yours to explain when and why you use the teqnique of compressing the trees to get that better image great stuff though Nigel and thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us you are truly inspiring and an awesome quote about remembering your 2 hours on top of the mountain 👍
I'm waiting on delivery of a Nikon 24-200. Looks like an amazing lens, have you learnt any quirks or have any tips to share about the lens?
what would you say is the lens that you end up using the most? I am limited to carry space in my bag haha
Unbelievable images Nigel, just stunning! 📸🙂 Keep up the good work
as always, great vid sir.
calm, simple, on-point and unpretentious.
I have ordered you Woodlands Book and look forward to that. I noticed your liking for Fog in a lot of the Woodland stuff. Can Fog be simulated in POST PROD in any way meaningful?
Excellent video as always. Can I mention something, as a fellow heart patient? My cardio conditioning is not where I'd like it to be (yet) but what has been most helpful, apart from walking, is a pro stairstepper like you find at health clubs. I become winded walking up even slight inclines and stairs really make me huff and puff. So I am trying to include stairstepping three times a week. That type of movement targets my issues most effectively, much more than biking or just walking. Can't run because my knees don't handle it. Best wishes 😀
Do you mean for your back?
@@NigelDanson I'm a five year heart patient, having had a heart attack. I mostly deal with back and joint issues via yoga and stretching. My comment today was in reference to heart health and cardio. You mentioned a while back you had a heart attack.
I love your videos Nigel. I learn a lot from them and they fill my head with ideas. Thank you very much for sharing. a greeting
"I always remember those two hours on the mountain, and I never remember those extra two hours in bed." This clicked into place for me wow
Another enjoyable watch. Couple of Q’s on the 24-200. Does it sit on tripod ok and how do you shift auto to manual focus without the hardware switch efficiently?
I've got the lens, and I find it easy enough just setting AF modes to fn2, and holding it while turning rear dial
Nice vlog Nigel, we had some foggy conditions the other day it was fantastic getting out and shooting in it. Really liked your first image of that tree 👍
What did you shoot the video with? Wondering what experience people have of using the 24-200 for video.
This lens looks stellar! How do I choose between this and the 24-120!
Love your work Nigel, its always eductional for me. Thank you.
Love the image of the tree Nigel, and really good to see you at the Photography Show this weekend! Take care.
Thanks Tony
Thanks for the great video. Love the discussions on why images do and do not work. Would love to see a video purposely taking bad images with 'corrected' composition.
Great suggestion!
Pebbles steals the show at 14 minutes ...
Best video you've put out for ages, simple but good, the two hours on the mountain comment I shall have etched on my grave stone, but not just yet.
That scene at 10:00 looked absolutely perfect with that footpath leading up to the larger tree and the slightly less visible one.
Nigel, thanks a lot for your videos, they all are very informative for me. Could you, please, give your opinion on using bridge cameras with nice zoom range, 20-600mm or more, but small sensors? Would they be ok for non-proffesional use or better to go with larger sensors (for landscapes)?. Thanks in advance.
Some of these images are very familiar 🤔. I was at your virtual talk this weekend. I really enjoyed it!!
Sunday morning. What a pleasure as always.
Nigel, I know it isn’t really an appropriate aim for photography, but could you do a video on taking images in flat unatmospheric lighting and your editing process?
I don’t always get access to good atmospheric conditions or unique locations based on my where I live, so understanding how to optimise my workflow for what is available to me would be such a useful video - maybe even for others too with lockdown stunting photographic exploration!
Just pre-ordered a copy of your book, looks great 👌🌳
Awesome, thank you!
Me too!
I really love the music you use. Great stuff and great things to learn from you!
Pebbles running in the background... Very sweet photo bomb 😍
Awesome as ever Nigel! Noticed you’re using one of the new Benro range. How are you finding it? Considering investing in one. Thanks
Great piece of work. Can I ask what do you use for recoding sound for you video? The sound is really clear.
It is a wireless mic - link on my website
@@NigelDanson great thank you. I will have a look. Have a brilliant day.
Yet another great video Nigel. The 24-200 lens looks very appealing, although a little unsure over the quality vs 3 separate zooms covering that range. What memory case is in the video, as couldn’t see it in your list of kit?
Oops forgot to put in in description - will sort now
Stunning images!!! Thank you, so much
Fantastic vlog as always Nigel. If I can just ask one question about the lens because I'm really undecided as to whether to buy it. Is it fast enough at f6. 3 for this type of photography???? Ultimately I really would prefer a 70-200 f4 but there's no clear date when Nikon might release one. The f2.8 is way out of my price range. Thanks 🙏🏻
Yes it is fine
Thanks @@NigelDanson I will have to go and see if I can try one at my local camera shop. Appreciate your reply 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I have the exact same thoughts. Did you get a 24-200 lens? If so, what’s your first opinion on it? :)
Hi @@thomasritschel2603 No, I decided not to go for it. I'm thinking about getting the 105mm macro instead. Maybe I can get a 70-200 when I'm rich and famous 😂😂😂
Guess we have to wait for the f4 version then 😅
Lovely vlog Nigel, perfect with a cup of coffee and a dog on my lap.
One camera, one lens? That is me on a bicycle tour!
I've always been attracted to that lens. How do you find it for softness in the corners?
Excellent video Nigel, beautiful images too!
Really enjoyable as usual Nigel. Thank you.
Always remember them 2hours on the mountain, not the 2 in bed that's inspiring, also i was watching on my big TV normally i chill in the bath watch your videos every Sunday, Today my missus said who's that talking on the tv i said my mate nigel, she said i love his voice So soothing she wants to watch every Sunday now, she is not even into photography like me lol, Great video as always.
That is great - always good to have a new follower! Get her to subscribe 🤣
@@NigelDanson Haha will do👍🤣📸
Fantatic video! Realy inspiring woodland shoots. Thank you for sharing. In sweden where I live I don't get that much fog. Maybe 4-5 times a year. And I'm often at work when it ocurs :D
exceptional images Nigel and your new book looks a great accompaniment to your Vistas publication
I always look forward to your videos and learn something new with each one, many thanks for all your time and efforts. I just wanted to clarify something with you: I didn’t completely understand your reply to my question at ‘The Photography Show’ yesterday about why you preferred Snapseed over LR Mobile. You mentioned that Snapseed was really good for allowing you to easily select Luminosity & Color masks; is this just for when you tinker with a new image on your phone, rather than exporting the image from your main Lightroom workflow and then changing it again on your phone ?
I think that it's a great idea to just decide on one lens and challenge to shoot with that for a day/week/project. Creates a range of new challenges but shooting with purpose and new observations.
Great point Katie
Such a Beautiful place!!!
Those gnarly trees remind me of the tree outside the kids bedroom in Poltergeist. They are creepy :) Oh, and a great, quotable line about the 2 hours remembered!
Wow, 301k subscribers. You're growing fast.... Well deserved
Morning fog - I love it.
I've got your woodland book on pre order and I hope I enjoy it as much as Vistas
you are 100% right about bringing less gear.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos 💪
Hello, I have the Nikon Z6 and a Nikkor Z 24-200mm f4-f6.3 VR lens. Can you tell me what the sweet spot of this telephoto lens for sharper photos? Thank you.
That image at 8:35 is just an epic shot
Great images Nigel
Thanks for the video very informative as are all your videos. I have the kit lens that came with my Z6 and have the adapter for using my old lenses one of which is 18-200mm do you think there’s any reason for me getting the 24-200 z lens and trading in my old lenses. Also can I ask why you used iso 400 on the first image? Which was beautiful by the way and not iso100 if you were using a tripod it’s all a learning curve for me
Nigel, you might have felt the pictures didn't turn out very well, but the video itself was beautifully filmed.
Thanks Tom
Stunning images - but it could only be meant ironically to minimalize to one lens which is a zoom from 24 to 200 mm!
Nice shots of trees.
Have you ever thought about using a polarising filter to control the strength of fog?
Awesome, thank you!
I'm a bit confused, your video says taking out the new 24-200mm lens, is it the Nikon Z lens? I didn't see a link for it above. Also, if it is this lens, it's f4-f6.3, yet your tree pic 6:50 into video says f10?
Nice video - will it be possible for you to show how you edit the good shot with the tree in „bad“ light? 😊
Enjoyed your first book and looking forward to receiving my copy of Woodlands. That said will there be a Pebbles book? :)
Now there is an idea...
