I really like the darker blue lighthouse version. While I appreciate black & white, I miss the colors: the gorgeous golden grass, the blue sky. I was torn between the two, color versions, but the darker blue sky looked less washed out.

You got the moon too :) :) I have hundreds of photo's from Blåvandshuk to go through now I'm home... I'm sure I've made a few of these mistakes!! For me in the day, there was no clouds (which was good for the moon rise later!) so I'm going to try some b&w edits, cause I love yours. Not much fire in my sky as the sunset.
It's going to really help going through my photo's to have this video on the other monitor to see where I went wrong and where I got it right.
Lastly, yes to central compositions from me, 100%!

In terms of the image of the Lighthouse and the moon, the black and white version was my favourite as the darker sky accentuated the moon better I think. If you had an interesting cloud formation behind the lighthouse, then colour would probably have worked better. Very enjoyable episode Mads with a beautiful collection of images and good compositional advice too

I’m envious of the minimalist possibilities in Denmark. I really like the shot with the moon centered above the lighthouse. In the second shot with the moon to the right, seems to me that the moon does not carry enough weight and ends up being a distraction.

Incredibly helpful tips as usual, Mads. The point about perceived direction is interesting, I know to apply it in people to make them look into the frame, but didn’t think about it for buildings. 😂 for the edits in 5:37, I preferred the colored dark one. The dark color contrast is just something and I think adds more mood to the image.

Thanks for this excellent video! I recently moved to a coastal location and have been doing some location scouting for landscapes. I do struggle with composing images, and using leading lines, and to create dynamic landscapes. Sometimes I can walk in a location and not really see anything worth shooting, where I know that there are landscapes there to be found. I am learning to “see” more and this is definitely my biggest struggle. I also do feel that telephoto lenses are much easier to find compositions than the ultra wide angles I have. I will keep at it and hopefully I can learn to see with my wide angle too!

Some great teaching moments in this video Mads, not to mention showcasing another incredible location in your homeland. A hard time choosing a favorite lighthouse image among the three but I've settled on the darker color version. The contrasting color tones of the yellow grasses and blue sky just added something extra special. An epiphany for me about the Rule of Thirds. An important composition tool that we've all heard a million times but you stress the importance of then making sure the image is balanced...excellent point! Totally agree with your philosophy on centering subjects to. Thanks again Mads.
