Dose Manjanna, Must Try Salem Idli, Butter Idli, Onion Open Dosa, Mysore Masala Dosa, Jayanagar, Bengaluru, Vegetarian, Street Food
Manjanna ran a popular street cart for 48 years in the South Bengaluru suburb of Jayanagar selling only three or four dishes, dose, idli and vada, earning him the moniker, Dose Manjanna. His son, Ganesh, seeks to keep alive his late father’s legacy in a tiny shop, aptly named Dose Manjanna, serving a smattering of traditional and some accidentally inspired creations, like the buttery, spicy Salem Idli. Concocted on a cold, rainy night, when his store had run out of hot idlis, in a bid to acquiesce to a customer’s demand for hot food just prior to the latter’s boarding a bus for Salem.
In this #gourmetontheroad episode, Food Lovers’ editor, Kripal Amanna tastes the Salem Idli, a scrumptious ghee onion dose and a couple of other tiffin treats that has Jayanagar’s denizens crowding this eatery at all times. Hope you enjoy this episode.
SALEM IDLI
This Idli roasted in butter, sings the flavour of the butter with the spicy, grainy crunch of the podi. Eat it piping hot, just off the tawa. When it cools down, pair it with the spicy hurigadale (fried gram) chutney.
Rs. 20 (usd 0.3)

Butter Idli
Thatte idli roasted on a hot tawa over melted butter, with lashings of butter and served with a dollop of butter, this is sheer decadence. The idli loses some its fervour as it begins to cool, and that’s when you taste its slight tartness.
Rs. 20 (usd 0.3)
8/10
Open Onion Dose
Served folded, this crisp, kadak dose was the highlight for me. Dripping with ghee and butter, smeared with chutney podi, a generous sprinkling of moist, crunchy onions, this dose is flavourful enough to be eaten on its own. The chutneys served alongside play a distant second fiddle to this open onion dose.
Rs. 40 (usd 0.6)
9/10
Mysore Masale Dose
The masale is smeared into a paste with chutney podi, butter and onions as the dose is roasted on the tava. I expected it to be robust in its flavours, however the potatoes seem to tone down the aggression of the chutney podi, making this a gently-spiced bite. Mix together the gram chutney, chutney podi and butter that’s served alongside, and combine with the dose to savour a spicy mouthful.
Rs. 40 (usd 0.6)
8/10
Shavige Baath
The shavige baath here is light, fluffy and springy, tossed in a chitranna or lemon rice masala. Studded liberally with peanuts, fried lentils, flecks of green chilli and roasted curry leaves, it makes a gentle yet persuasive impression on the palate. If you like it spicy, enjoy it with the smokey tomato-red chilli-roasted gram chutney.
Rs. 30 (usd 0.4)

"Ghee and butter makes everything taste infinitely better." Wow what poetry for the ears , eyes and ofcourse to make our mouth salivate just seeing this food show. Superb Sir !
Whether it's a star hotel or small canteen. Whether it's a nonveg dish or authentic south indian Idli , dosa , the way this guy tastes the food , explains about the food and respects the food maker is just fantabulous. Nobody I mean nobody can beat this guy when it comes to food review .
🙏🙏
God bless Karnataka, its food, its people, its culture....... forever a proud, forever Kannadiga❤
Yes. Great vegetarian choices, great people. Love from Kerala
@siddhu m everyone knows kannada came from tamil bro..but culture is different for everyone kannada have their own culture tamils have their own culture we all are Indians ✌
@@kudlalive wht the hell dude🤦♂️😂I'm not against your language just telling the facts if tgat hurts you I'm sorry but tamil is not derived from tulu bro..
@@kudlalive for God's sake please read my reply cmnt everyone knows southern languages came from tamil but i didn't degraded or disrespected your language(if you think telling the facts is disrespecting your language then I'm sorry)
And tamilians stole udupi cuisine and shamelessly call their own invention 😂
Salem idli story is quite interesting sir , ur devotion towards food is constant in all videos , kudos to food lovers TV 👏🤗
The birth of Salem idly, innovation out of necessity, is definitely a daunting story. Successful with 3 or 4 varieties. Great. Kripal sir, people gets addicted on watching your videos. Can't resist watching repeatedly. Even a simple video covers lots of informations. This is what expected from a vlogger. Wish your service continue for ever. Good luck👍❤
A complete guide to taste Idly.
Idly eating was never so cool!
Thanks to you.
I am regular customer to dose manjanna, and the taste is 😍
I am in chennai... but my mind is just in Bangalore.. just to get a savour of best of Bengaluru dosas. Wow... what a beauty..
This is how the Food Review to be presented ..better than street byte
If I may, every food story teller has their own style that appeals to their audience.
Very True
@@FoodLoversTV Sir, please review Namma SLN at Gandhi Bazaar Basavanagudi small eatery near to Roti Ghar
street byte GUY IS JUST FAT AND PLAIN BORING.HE DOESNT HAVE ANYTHING THAT IS INTERESTING.
Idly Rosted into that butter is some thing different which I ever heard
The best part of this channel is the way you enjoy the food. Makes me crave sitting here far away from Bengaluru.
I love watching this man eat and talk..To the point with high quality content 👍
We need more food critics like him to unearth the rich culinary heritage of our country. Unlike those who do food challenges and have cliched response to Indian food of being oily spicy and unhealthy.
Amazing analysis of Food! Seems the Salem Idli is fabulous.
Certainly is worth trying.
Love ur videos and wait for them always. So nice to see u try everything everywhere... 😋
Ur language is the best add on to any food u eat....simply luvin it...
Wow, I love Dosa and Shavige bath. Nice place Jayanagar, feels like heaven. Since I was born and raised in Jayanagar. I love your show sir, the way you explain and taste the food with the Real feeling, i like that a lot.

Hi kripal sir i love to watch your gourmet on the road when i am feeling bored.
Am jealous of you.. exploring different restaurants and enjoying yummy food.
One of the very few food reviewers who pronounces 'dose' like it is supposed to be called, instead of dosa. Nice to hear you speak ಕನ್ನಡ sir. 😊
Dhanyavada!

*The recipe should have been named as "Hurry Worry Curry Idli" instead of Salem Idli because the customer was Worried about the Idli being cold + was in a Hurry to catch his Bus + wanted lot of Curry - Hot & Spicy(Gun Powder on his Idli). This would have been a international hit like chicken 65 story.*
PS: Could have added some cheese on it too. 👍👌
*Great Video. Love from Chennai, Tamilnadu. Please do make videos from other states of incredible India, specifically the north & north east. 🙏*
Maybe you can contact the restaurant and rename it as *"Hurry Worry Curry Idli".*
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Kripal ,
For small place and great food, A doha comes to my mind.
Bada hua to kya hua, jaise ped khajur,
Pathik ko chhaya naa miley, aur phal laage ati dur...!!
I am a person who has seen street food culture start in 1966, 67 .It was born in bylanes of Bangalore silk shope street
Near avenue road with two Idli dosa push carts.
Within 20 years, whole Bangalore boasted of such carts and hole in the wall eateries with great taste.
Loved this spisode .Keep them coming.
The owner is very compassionate....
he speaks very clear in Kannada and not much influenced with blabbering English.
Liked it a lot
The owner of this joint is a breeze. You can just tell that he doesn’t just blabber about because of over-enthusiasm, even his words are measured and in the right proportion.
He loves serving dose, so unassuming for such a busy hotel
Yes Level Headed..due to Stress free mind. He is a master..No boss to harass or question
Brother he is also a artist he plays tribal african djembe and let me tell you he is the real deal
I m south indian dishes lover , pure veg. I like the way u discribe , what u eat 😋😋😋
I like the Salem idli superb video theme of the hotel is great n very interesting 👏👏👌👌👍👍💐💐

Goes into it... Uuhhmmmmmm... Thats it.. Rest that sound speaks.. Tons of love ❤😘
U r truly connecting india by translating language of seller and creating curisity in the mind of viewer about food and people. Good job bro
Super Episode, I should appreciate Sir cos It's the review of food and it's like food portrays it's story. Thanks Sir.
Kripal sir..the way in which u present the food is just awesome..
I love your videos .Your expressions are truly revealing of the taste of the food.

Kudos to you Sir for executing such an interesting vid featuring just 4 humble dishes with such grace fullness and passion. You have a way with words and the way describe the dishes feels so accurate, sometimes I feel that I am having the dishes in your show. It's like reading a novel. I'm feeling hungry again after watching.
This is indeed a best tiffin stop at Jaynagar in Namma Bengaluru and indeed Kripal sir hats off to your generous and buttery review for the food that paves the way to Jaynagar from Udupi
Loved this episode Kripal 👌👍🏻
Shavige Bhaat !!!! Thats my Fav. Ate it years ago. Dunno where do we get in Mumbai. But this version is looks very delicious ! The open onion dose looks tempting. Any dose tates best with the butter and ghee and he justified it well. The name Salem Idli tell you that how much does the owner cares about his customers needs and any food joint or a business can be a success only with such a customer friendly attitude.
Happy Holi Sir. Nice video. Loved this place. Also loved the concept Onion Dosa. Also loved the other items shown in this video. Thanks for this video Kirpal Sir.

Hi Kripal Your videos are much above other Food Tours which are available on youtube. The only negative thing is your description is so passion loaded we feel like missing the food at the point.
Superb Salem idli..
Considering hygiene and quality, really appreciate the owner for keeping price down..

Hmm...

Carrying a Legacy is a Big Responsibility. Keep it up...
I recommend halli jonne biriyani which is next to the Vijaya pu college in 4th t-block. The biriyani is next level, give it a try.
lovely dose 💋💋👍👍👍👍👍 Bengaluru 😘😘😘😘😘😘
Great innovation. It seems masala dosa was invented to allow orthodox vegetarians to eat onions without being seen doing so. Cocktails were invented in the US during Prohibition to let the customers of bars to be able to drink alcohol without showing it. Mutton roll was invented when a customer asked for a kebab and paratha, but asked for it to be wrapped up together in Calcutta's Nizam's restaurant. My friend, Mr Jayashankar crumbles left over idlis, fries them in butter with dry powdered masala, and low, you have an interesting masala flavored snack
Namma bengaluru namma janna making Bombat idly dosa 👌
What i really like about this channel is that they don't promote a restaurant for money! Kripal visits eateries/restaurants most of the times based on recommendations. Very few RUclipsrs do that, they instead promote restaurants and rate them 10 on 10 - not because of the quality / the taste of food but because of the money the restaurant owner has paid.
I hope you keep making more such "unbiased" videos, promoting good taste!
