- We're looking at Season 1 Episode 1 of the Chosen and more specifically at Nicodemus the Pharisee. We do not see any scriptural scenes with nicodemus in episode 1, however the story behind the character really sets him up for some really amazing growth and understanding through season 1. Just found your channel. I enjoyed you breaking down The Chosen episodes. Dallas Jenkins made a disclaimer that he was trying to fill in the gaps that were not scripture. But how they would have lived and talked during that time period. He also encourages all viewers to read the scriptures for themselves. I really love The Chosen . Yeah I think that’s going to become more and more important as the show goes on. People get really attached to these characters which is great, as long as we know truth from fiction.

Good job as usual. I will put a little bee in everyone’s bonnet for future episodes. Notice the influence that Nicodemus’ wife has on him and what he decides to do when Jesus calls and how that differs from Simon’s wife when he is called. Those were and often are critical factors affecting decisions made by spouse’s when called by God. (As a matter of fact, Dallas has openly shared how Amanda has been a full partner influencing and supporting him in this film project). Just from reading the Bible many may think that women did not have much influence on their husbands and families of first century Israel but that was not the case. The writers of The Chosen accurately portray that. A most valuable thing that this program shows is the culture of the time and all its facets which Jesus and those He called to follow Him experienced in their humanity. Jesus dealt with His followers and their human condition with love, compassion, accountability, and did it all with humor. He does the same with us today. Praise the Lord.

This part of the backstory of Nicodemus may not be spelled out in scripture, but a similar situation happened to the disciples. In Matt 17:21 Jesus answers that this kind cometh not out but by prayer and fasting [the 'and fasting' part of the answer of questionable authorship]. And no one questioned Jesus of when he prayed! Thanks for the 'deep dive' comments.

I'm an Unlicensed Non-Certified historian. What people need to understand is The Chosen is historical fiction. By that I mean the basic story is true and accurate, but some of the characters and incidents are fiction. What this genre does (when it is done well as this has been) is put you into a different world. Example: I tell people if you want to know about the Civil War Read the trilogy of Michael & Jeff Shaara (Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, The Last Full Measure.)
Yeah well said for sure. We should not look at this show as God’s word or scripture in any way whatsoever. But it is beneficial to see the people we know from scripture in this way. 👍 thanks for your input Steven !
