I wont go to the extent of removing the louver system, but I do want to dismantle it. Do you know what wire I can pull to permanently open the louvers or should I just remvove the whole mess? I don't want to have to take the front grill off. Thanks for responding.
Yes that's the sound and it does clear up after like 15 secs. I'll keep an eye on it and see . Can it be a clog and is.there an additive to help stop this
That's a good background on why the louvers are designed for the motor, but my beef is, I hate sensors that stop working properly, or systems that operate on sensors that no longer work the way they should. My truck louver system gives a thud, thud, thud, thud, thud noise and I never knew what the cause was until I put my fingers on the top of the electronics motor on top of the louver system, near the top of the radiators. As long as it's just for getting the motor to run hotter quicker, and not anything terribly important, I will disconnect the electrical system to dismantle that whole mess. And why not, I pulled the wire on the stop/start technology when that sensor failed, and that was easy. I've had enough of these automotive engineers that design an idea, get it implemented into production, then the systems fail before the truck or auto is even three or four years old...and it's too expensive to fix a stupid idea anyway. If my louvers get stuck closed and I can't get good air to flow to the radiator freely, then I'll take a good needlenose pliers and crack every one of those dumb ass louvers, like a dentist fixing a row of rotten teeth. I'm pissed. Technology be damned.
Things are way more complicated than they have to be. Blame it on government emission regulations. No manufacturer wants to spend time and money developing that crap. The government says reduce tailpipe emissions and they must comply. The earlier the engine warms up to operating temperature then the exhaust emissions are reduced due to the engine efficiency. Cold engines use more fuel. Great comment! -Glen
@@ozzstars_cars I have a 2018 expedition max and it’s acting weird. Non towing, when I drive at high speed (70+) and then push on gas and turbo activates I see a temp (232-235). As soon as I let go of gas pedal temperature disappears on coolant gauge. Truck has not overheated, ideas?
To me the noise is too late after the start to be the timing chain. A bad chain noise is there the instant the engine starts and is usually only there a few seconds at most. Just turn up the tunes, Glen.
That's a good observation man. It is a little bit delayed in the vid but sometimes comes on sooner and much louder. It's wacky but then again the grill says Ford. 🤣🤣
Very helpful. I have a 2018 2.7 purchased new and it's been doing this same thing since new. Never on a cold start but get it up to temp, park and let it sit for an hour and it will make that odd clack every now and again. So that's my active grill shutter stepper motor making that noise? Is there a fix for this or is it just year specific? Seems to be happening on the 18 and 19's.
Great video thanks brother. I don't have those. The way you explain what they are and they do remind me of the older semi trucks. They had the fins in the grill or would be the grill. They would open or close depending on the engine temperature. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother
My 2015 has been making a sound after the engine is on for about 5 min. that lasts for a couple of seconds and then goes away. It only happens on cold start - it's Summer right now. At first I thought it might be a bearing going on a tensioner or idler pulley but now I'm thinking it might be these shutters. I'll have to fire it up and just wait for the noise with the hood open. It should be easy to see if the shutters have opened or closed while the noise is happening. It's one of those things that if you take it in to the dealer your going to get the ole can't reproduce the problem answer.
@@ozzstars_cars I don't think it's the phasers as the engine isn't making any unusual noises at startup or at temperature. It seems more temperature related as the engine warms up and it only does it once each trip. That's why I'm thinking it's those shutters. Another way to diagnose would be to just disconnect the connector to the motor that powers them and see if the noise goes away. The truck only has 62K miles on it but I retired last year so it doesn't get driven every day anymore and I had a water pump go last year. I'd be in the market for a new one but they are unobtainium this year with the chip shortage.
@@ozzstars_cars Is this a specialty tool - I have a Actron code scanner but I don't think it gives me the capability to cycle things. I had the truck out today and it seemed like every time I started the engine it made the noise within a few minutes for a second or two and then not again until I shut the engine off. I took a look under the hood and it looks like the connector is right by the hood latch so I pulled the plug. Hopefully that will stop the noise and isolate the problem. The shutters are rather expensive at about $350 so if that is the problem i may just leave unplugged. It sort of sounds like gears slipping / grinding and I'm not noticing anything from a drivability standpoint.
Interesting that Glynn has no answer like the cat. This is not a good video for people that have real concerns like that damn technology that doesn’t work properly.
I’ve got an 18, f150 and I was wondering about that. But also when I hit the gas it will tick like that for almost a second or less. I hope it’s the same thing. I don’t like how it sounds I thought it was my timing chain hitting the timing cover

I get a rattling every cold morning on my 2017 f-150 for about a minute or so? The rattling sounds like two hollow pieces of metal vibrating? Only happens when it gets -10 and lower! I'm still going to bring it in to get checked. Just curious what you may think it is?

Perfect, something else to go wrong for the sake of emissions. Im sure the gain is significant...(rolleyes)
