I started with a V8 as I bought it from the administrator of the business I worked for. I had driven the truck from new & she was 7 years old with 1.1m km. Wasnt the best move but I trusted it. I still own it but its retired with 1.7m kms. If you buy a 450bhp Scania its very easy to get 500bhp out of it safely. Helps when there are lots of 450bhp Scanias from large fleets with low kms. The mainstay of my fleet is 500 to 560bhp S series singe tags & mini midlifts, no need for dual tags mostly because of the weight & extra fuel usage. Same with full sized midlifts. Can make the most of cheaper fuel with bigger tanks. The 560 is a weapon & is all the power you need for 99% of work. We do European work so that extra bhp can help journey times on 8000km runs compared to a 500bhp. A V8 will be fastest but extra fuel & weight isnt worth it most of the time. Would rather have upto 11mpg from a 560 @ 40t vs 9mpg from the V8 @40t in Europe. The V8 will drink around 8,000ltrs more a year. Depending on work a mini midlift is best as it saves over 500kg. Doesnt sound much but for us that 500kg is around £150 per round trip which is again over the year £3,600. Over the year a V8 vs 560 its over £10,000 difference based on 150,000km a year that my trucks do.

Well said - sensible advice. We found better fuel returns when disconnected the option for “driving modes” to stop the drivers constantly selecting power mode etc. Fleet of Scania 12x 450 R cab top lines &high-lines and also 13 Merc Actros 430,s. Mercs better on fuel but they all plagued by electronic issues (merc dealer only repairs !) so earned more money with Scanias.

A company you probably know in the log hauling industry based near Dingwall did a test comparing the V8 against a 500 straight 6 and the V8 was using £70 more a day in fuel , it was quite a comprehensive comparison and the outcome was the V8s have gone replaced with 500s . Sensible decision 👍

Good solid advice: buy what you need, not what you dream of. Dreams can be worked toward, it'll be more rewarding once you achieve it.
Love the honesty that you Sandy, as a true fullblooded Scania man, advise to stay away from the V8's.

For any off road work you can't beat a Scania but for hard road tramping a Daf wins for comfort and space. Down to each different work types which manufacturer is better.Good insight into looking for trucks👍

Personally for me, a R450 tag, keep your v8, re:the next gen mapping you mentioned, r450s and 500s are exactly the same engines and turbos, you can have the r500 ecu programmed in the 450, and it will do the r500 power on the original scania map, and then if choose to do so can then remap it ontop 👍 so a 450 could easily be 560+ 🤠 something to look into sandy 😉

I am also looking at a Scania R. For private use. Just to go to truck shows and stuff. I already have some driving licenses, according to the Dutch standard. A, BE and T. I also have a crane license. And now work with cranes up to 25 tons. And a forklift certificate. Usually, I drive a Linde E30, with a trailerhins. And then pull trailers up to 18-20 tons. I can also drive the Linde E80. A,forklift with an 8 ton lift capacity. Now I have to get my driving license C. And then buy a Scania R.

My Plan for when I start my own business is to get my Class 1 license but get a Rigid DAF, that way I won't have to spend money on a trailer too, then when my business is a little more developed to the point where my little rigid can't handle the work alone then I'll get an artic DAF or maybe a Renault.

One thing I will say, people tend to be against their favourite smaller youtubers taking on sponsors for videos, especially after the Raid Shadow Legends saga. But im all for Sandy, and others, taking on small, simple, non-intrusive ads like the one is this video. I would rather spend a minute listening to Sandy promote Surfshark than the same amount of time watching the ads at the start of the vids. because they actually help

    Well said and presented.......
    Ya I want a V8 t cab.......
I think like you.....I'm not a owner op (sometimes wish I was)
I work for a family owned plant hire company.
IV always run lorrys as "my lorry" took pride and care on it....the lorrys represented the company and me as a driver.
Now I shere 3 lorrys with a fat lazy barstool and a gaffer with an attitude of it runs...it's ok.
The lorrys are battered, cabs are a shit hole and nobody cares.
I'm embarrassed when I get pulled or have a cab inspection and I say, honestly it's not me.....
    I bought a 2018 king trailer last year.....ex owner op....it's now reckec!!
The Scania R480..... lovely lorry was mint but had +900k on clock.....
Now there's not a straight panel.....
I eat my pack up in bus stops...it's cleaner.
Keep looking sandy you'll find a good work horse.
